Lemmings Main / Re: Thoughts on a Game Engine for Lemmings

On another note, Eric, are you going to make it multiplayer Lemmings like in the originals?

Or make a version incorporating all the features nobody likes from the other Lemmings games and making a new one? ... Heh, yes. I'm a fan of originality. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. >_<

Best levels require thinking. So you can make a level look as nice as you want, but if it just requires you to bash a few walls, then ...

Better rethink that strategy before trying that level again.

They were probably named for the behaviour Lemmings are meant to exhibit. Of course, this turned out to be a Disney fallacy.

Do any other animals exhibit this supposed behaviour? Mass suicide?

Oh, hang on. Yes. They're humanoid. They kill themselves with bombs. Lemmings are humans. :D

It won't die, Sony won't let a working franchise languish like Psygnosis did in the late 90s and early 00s.

Already there's...

PSP Lemmings
PS2 Lemmings with EyeToy Lemmings
PS3 Lemmings 2
Mobile Lemmings Tribes (same logo as The Tribes, but no 2 ... and none of the extra skills, and only 3 tribes)

... and there's more to come.

Lemmings Main / Re: Lemmings is a bit too gory isn't it?
« on: April 07, 2009, 08:09:12 AM »
Lemmings isn't meant to be a completely cartoonish game. Just look at the tileset with a great big devil pig in it with a level that's made of a giant "666". It justifies the electrocution, weights, rocks, and ... the best one, bombers! :D

What would I love to see in a new Lemmings game...

The original 8 skills, and no more. Oversaturation killed Lemmings 2. Having ONLY 8 skills meant you had defined constraints, the same for each level. You could go down, across, diagonally, up, or dead in your tracks. What more do you need? Anything else just makes hero Lemmings easier to come by, and the need to think becomes absent.

Quirky themes. Crystal, Hell, Earth, Pink (aka Roman), Yellow (aka Egypt)... They're all rather surreal, except for maybe Yellow. I mean, little men running through the pits of hell and jumping into a giant pig... that's just brilliant. Waltzing around an ice-palace outlined with giant crystals the size of blue whales? Great! ... It fits Lemmings. Changing that prospect causes a failure to maintain an aspect of the spirit of Lemmings.

Lemmings need to die. If there's a need to save them all, then... no. There needs to be bombers, they need to die when they fall from a height, they need to drown, they need to burn. Otherwise, what are we saving them from? ... Just the clock, it seems.

That's all.

Maybe that's holding too close to the original? Well... it is. The original is the best, and say what you like, the sales said it all. The multitude of ports say it all. The fangames which only recreate the original say it all. The forums that are dedicated to all things Lemmings but 99% of the time only touches on the originals or Xmas or Oh No say it all. The fansites on the original say it all.

Don't mess with success. (Or else you get a PS3...)

I'm interested to know why everyone goes on about how Jeroen Tel did the music... Um, Tim Wright and Brian Johnston are just imaginary, are they? :S

I think it was like 14.

PSP/PS2 version: Aside from the new graphics and music, some of the level design makes routes from past versions fail. For example, Mayhem's The Boiler Room is a real pain in the butt! The added graphical details impact bridges, for example. The special levels based on old Psygnosis games are there but are different in different ways. A BEAST of a Level is the same but the trees have no leaves and there's no tree around the exit. The rest of the levels retain their names but the designs are different.

Lemmings Main / Re: A new Lemmings remix

That remix was pretty ... dull. Why are all the remixes really boring techno? Everyman and his dog can make those in GarageBand in 5 minutes. Never anything special.

Lemmings Main / Re: Which Lemmings version has the best music?
« on: April 07, 2009, 07:19:04 AM »
I also rather like the PSP music. I never used to, but they've grown on me since I bought my PSP.

I used to think they were just ambient, but some of the Hell tunes are nice. For those who haven't played, the music doesn't follow any particular order: there are about 3 tunes per style (Hell, Crystal, Earth, Egypt, Roman) which are selected at random when you start the level. There are also 3 special tunes based on past tunes (She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain, The Can Can, Only Floaters Can Survive This) which may appear in any style.

Seems a bit silly to lose the classics, but they actually are rather nice to play against. You don't get taunted with the continual loop of the music, it's just like a nice whispy wind.

Interesting to see a nice new collection of the DOS versions.
And of course there's the original Amiga versions on the Lemmings File Archive.
And the Sega Master System version can be found on SMS Power Music Archive.
And the Sega Mega Drive version can be found on Project 2612.
And the Windows versions can be found on VGMusic, erroneously listed under NES.
And the PSP versions of the past-tunes are coming as I record them from my PSP Brite... Links soon. :-)

My favourites are the Sega Master System version because they're shorter. Makes it easier on me to whistle.

Also, some of the music is different and perhaps more appreciated by this commonwealther's ear. Lol.

Lemmings Main / Re: Comparing ports of Lemmings

Totally reviving an old thread, but...

NES: The levels are much harder due to the mechanics of the game. Some will say they did the best they could, but look at how good the Sega Master System version is. Anyway, the levels are squeezed into a smaller space (look at Use Bashers This Time, it's tiny). Lemmings build much steeper ladders, but that's OK because the levels are smaller. When Lemmings bash, whole blocks of terrain disappear, not just pixels-per-bash. When Lemmings dig, same thing. When Lemmings mine, about 3 or 4 blocks of diagonal terrain disappears even before the Lemming has got there yet. This leads to the interesting idea that Lemmings will pass a miner and fall through the ground while he's still mining. Sometimes Lemmings won't do a job because they don't have room to, but you still lose the skill. For an example of how bad this game was, just play Just Dig. If one Lemming digs, he will live. If all the rest fall down his hole, they will all die because someone turned gravity on too high.

GB: Same thing as above, but black and white.

GBC: This version contained Oh No! More Lemmings. Alot of the levels are missing, and none of the music is the same as any other version. It's superior to the previous two versions in that gravity has finally been fixed so Lemmings don't die from innocuous leaps.

Macintosh: The funniest thing is the censorship. The devil exit has been replaced with what looks like a sort of melted birthday cake with eyes and buckteeth. Also, the levels are squashed in horizontally similar to the Sega Mega Drive version.

Sega Mega Drive: The terrain are all different colours, and as mentioned above have different levels replacing older ones.

Sorry to revive old threads, but information helps many.

Level Design / Re: What's in a name?
« on: October 14, 2007, 08:29:40 PM »
I know what the play is, but in a literal sense "5 Miles if you love Lemmings" makes no sense given it has no context to fit the 5 miles with. I can probably imagine the name meaning alot for Origins and Lemmings though, that has to be the most painful level to play without Fast Forward in the Fun difficulty  alongside Heaven can wait, we hope!

Lemmings Main / The Adventures of Lomax - Linux?
« on: October 14, 2007, 08:26:53 PM »
Hi there, wondering if one of our very few Linux users knows of a way to run Adventures of Lomax in Linux. Wine doesn't work, because it can't force Lomax to accept the colour depth and just play. I don't wanna install Qemu or VMWare just to play the game, and I don't wanna dual boot either. Too much space wasted on a Windows installation...

Anyone? =)

(PS: If a solution exists, the game may become playable under Mac OS X too)
