OK, I've finally got a bit of free time to have a go at some of these on the Mac version.

I confirm 49/50 on Crazy 1; my method seems to be slightly different, as I finish with climber, floater, three blockers and just one digger left. (I'm afraid I can't provide screenshots, as my Mac doesn't have internet access.)

That's true; and also, digging through the edge of steel is not necessarily a bug, but a terrain difference -- the object is not placed at the exact same location as the visible metal area. (Our investigations on Taxing 22 certainly confirm this!)

Still, that's over only 80 levels (since Tame hardly counts) as opposed to 120.

OK I see, so when you said "for which the best known solution does not save 100%", I guess what you meant was "for which my best known solution...".  ;)

No; what I meant was "the best-known solution"; that should teach me to be careful about punctuation even on forums! In other words, the best-known solution to the level, not specifically the best known solution to the problem of saving as many as possible.

Anyway, that was just a starting point; LemSteven's list obviously supersedes this, except that he needs to tell us which solutions depend on bugs and what the best solution is that is guaranteed on any version. In particular, are there any solutions where 100% is only possible because of a bug?

I'm not saying it isn't; I just don't have time right at the moment to look through them all and see which ones I can get 100% on. (I will have a go at this soon, though!)

Yeah, but it afterwards occurred to me that it would be neater to have it work for adding graphics in the first place as well.

Another suggestion.

I think objects should have the possibility of going in three layers -- in front of everything, in front of terrain graphics but behind lemmings and bridges, and at the back. The point is that most often you don't want objects to appear in front of lemmings or bridges, and it's very annoying to place lots of objects in the wrong layer because you changed layer to make a small modification to the terrain and then have to change them all. But just sometimes you will want an object to appear in front of lemmings -- for instance, a "mist" harmless animation object.

I don't know of any attempt to keep statistics for the ONML levels. There are certainly lots more than on the first Lemmings where no 100% solution is known, and probably lots more where it's impossible.

I seem to be missing the styles for nearly all the levels.

There's a fairly obvious backroute on your " Private room available" remake. One basher, one digger. Then float, dig and build to save the digger as well.

Well that's easy, make a "Paste Opaque" menu item under the "Edit" menu, right beneath the regular "Paste".

I don't agree; that wouldn't deal with placing terrain directly from the Add Graphic window in opaque mode. I suggest that "Draw Opaque" be a toggle command in the Edit menu.

Odd.... I was sure I remembered seeing that behaviour on the Genesis version. I'll check that and the Mac version as soon as I get a chance.

I have a few new suggestions........

(1) Non-rectangular erasers. (Isosceles right triangles and circles are the most useful shapes that spring to mind.) One way to do this would be to have the erasers bitmap on the style file contain three colours -- the background, the eraser colour (which has to be black) and a "foreground" representing pixels that are in the eraser rectangle but not part of the eraser, if that makes sense.

(2) An "opaque mode" -- that is, if you copy and paste a rectangle, black pixels are also copied and can overwrite terrain pixels. (Unlike Paint, this should not be default; it's really annoying to have to turn it off all the time. But having it there would be useful.)

(3) Allow level sizes up to at least 1600 x 1600 -- I think that's the maximum width on the original game.

On many versions (including Cheapo) it's the other way round -- exploding blockers don't turn other lemmings in the half-second before they explode.

(I exploited this to backroute Insane Steve's "Survival Curve". Sorry Steve!)

Indeed.

You don't need the bomber to turn lemmings to solve "Many lemmings make level work". Make the second lemming a builder as a delay; the first lemming will then explode before the next lemming reaches him.

I'm on a visit to Oxford for a few days (it's where I went to university and many of my old friends are finishing their exams) ... but I think I know the solution, I just didn't have time to try it out before I left. Want me to send you it?
