I found this amusing.

I went into the quake-net stats and found this page of every user's stats and a "random quote" from each user.

geoo - "honestly, your line of thinking is just strange"
thick_molasses - "who uses that? physicists probably?"
Proxima - "Why would you think I'm being coy with you?"
GuyPerfect - "That must just be a version number maybe?"
Insane_Steve - "but yea let me fix the more egregious backroutes, be right back"
ccx - "it's the side effect of real life ;)"
Porcupine - "Extremely high amount of lateral thinking involved"
Capybara - "In fact, I think I'll take a nap now"
TM_ - "....is just hasn't been found yet"
TM_____ - "I think I'll watch some asshole mario before bed"
Mindless` - "is evil or is easier to parse than JSON?"

I wish some of the regulars would come back  :'(

-----
@Simon, you need a forum game like; spot the porcupine. Or maybe shout out whenever you mention porcupine.  :P

11-3 The Diving Board 99/100 with reset glitch. 98/100 (required) without.
99 is the max with no damage.

Quote

I think it's possible to get 99 with no glitches. I've tried unsuccessfully to use just 2 builders at the normal lemmings start area to get to the switch in time for the water lemmings to get to the pool without having to block them off. (thus not having to use a reset glitch). One blocker on the right side of the water lemmings entrance can be freed by a build/bash. I use the final 4th builder to stall a water lemming.
It comes sooo close though. Irritatingly close. :-\

12-2 Anger Love Hate. 49/50

Quote

Again, getting 100% no glitches is irritatingly close. You can use builders all the way and the lemming that goes to flip the switch can even climb up through the thin retractable floor. (idk if this is considered a glitch or not I mentioned it on "Going in all directions") I use 1 bomber to blow a safe hole through the builders steps for the rest of the lemmings.
It seems like there should be a way to get the worker to turn around so he can build to the other steps instead of using the bomber; after flipping the switch but I haven't figured a way yet. I'm still trying however.

as far as I know, it's been tested on XP and 7. I'm not sure about Wine.
On Wine the game wasn't too bad but had some problems. It don't think it was not playable though.

If you have a Windows 98, you don't need it; the game works correctly on that version. I don't know what it would do if you tested it out...

Lix Levels / Re: mobius' lix level sets
« on: August 19, 2012, 06:24:29 PM »
thnx for the suggestions and for the order file. :) However it’s not working for me. My levels don’t get ordered correctly.

Fearful Symmetry isn’t new… but now that I think about it I may have made it for Lemmix and never redid this one for Lix. Yours is the correct solution.

And you right about the title to “migration”. Once again I got my levels mixed up and confused. I’ve changed it back. I didn’t realize it was that much harder. I’m glad anyway, because that is what I originally intended for this level. Your solution is slightly different; but not a backroute. (Mine just uses the blocker at the exit and I use a builder to block at the upper entrance.) I also added 30 seconds making the time 4 minutes. 3:30 was too tight after I tested it again. It doesn't change the solution anyway.

solution to wrong way is correct. The climber is a misdirection. In way of difficulty I thought it is kind of in the middle. 7 isn’t that hard is it? If you think it should be down much farther I’ll put it there (lower number I mean).
I won’t be too concerned with order in the future because I probably won’t upload that many levels at a time.

Lix Levels / mobius' lix level sets
« on: August 19, 2012, 04:45:56 AM »
before you get excited; there's nothing new here... yet. (unless your new to this forum, then please try my levels)

Here are [the best of] my first 19 levels. I renamed some of them and tighty-ed them up a little. All of them are backroute tested pretty extensively except for 19.  I plan on posting this folder in the community set as well so that you can replace these with whatever versions you have currently in there. But I currently have three-hundred and thirty three posts and my karma count is three.....  ;P

On 19, Eye of the needle, I made a very simple edit to geoo’s first revision version. (which is the second version after my initial upload). I can’t back route it with the known ways yet, but we’ll see about that. If this works I won’t have to use geoo or Proxima’s separate version they made, sorry guys. :XD:

Hopefully there will be a set of more new levels soon!

EDIT: I fixed the problem with the order.txt. download this version.

@Simon, thanx, but...  Clam has no line breaks and his work  ???

Tech & Research / Strategys and methods for solving levels
« on: August 18, 2012, 12:44:17 AM »
(warning: this topic will have spoilers)

Since I recently solved a level I was working on for a while I can relate exactly my process for solving it. And I wanted to discuss this to hopefully better understand how other people solve levels and learn something about creating them.

The level is “Move on in two Separate Groups” (Sunsoft 23) from Genesis. *see attachment

I’m fairly certain if anybody cares to talk about their solution to this level it will be different.

The first thing I did was take a look at the terrain and look for the immediate apparent plausible route. Which I decided was going upward, through the large twisted pillar. I also considered going under that if it didn’t work but noted it would almost definitely take more builders.

You need 100% so the blocker seemed a ruse at first, because I always associate undermining blockers with glitchy behavior (idk really know why, you were required to do it in the first game; it’s a stupid association). Regardless I immediately thought of using the blocker on the left where I could easily free him by bashing under the steps. This takes up 2 bashers however, if I wanted to get a worker on that side, which I thought from early on I really needed one. You can bash right but then too many lemmings clustered out so I was forced the use more than just one builders to prevent them from dying so I pretty much ruled that way out. I found no way of bridging that gap from the other side. This also got me into a habit of using only one builder at the gap and prevented me from seeing the need for 2 builders there early on.

Letting that side go for now, I focused on the upper entrance. From that entrance lemmings will be trapped in the twisted pipe. With no climbers the only way to get them turned around and going left is to use a builder. First I just did that; making all the lemmings fall into the area around the steps and pretty much trapped for now. The fact that just two builders would get them out of that area wasn’t clear to me at all until I tested it out much later. I didn’t even bother testing because it just didn’t look possible. It’s kind of hard to tell but 1 builder will just make it from the left upper steps to the twisted pillar. Eventually I came up with the plan of;
-block on the left, build over that gap. Then free that blocker.
-on the right, build to turn around then when they get down in the small step space bash left to make a path for the left lemmings.

I then gave up for a while and when I came back to this level I first came up with the habit of letting 1 lemming (on the right) fall into the twisted pillar to bash right toward the exit then build above him to block off so I could bash again later to complete that way. This always ended in running out of bashers. Which led me to stop blocking on the left and looking for another way to hold back the left crowd, or just brute build over the gap.

Eventually I discovered you can build once on the right over the crack in the twisted pillar, bash, build and build only once more to stall/turn around one lemming and the way is then safe. There was then only two lemmings that went down to the left. The way was pretty much clear then.

So in the end it seems that a simple miss misunderstanding in the beginning combined with some stubbornness is what kept this level from me.
After I have a solution I can look back and say that the main problem here is that I didn’t test enough. 1 major stumbling block for me was getting up the stairs next to the twisted pillar. However I can say that if the designers purposely made that difficult to see; they succeeded. (If this was intentional or not, something tells me it wasn’t)
Visual elements effect me a lot so it seems.

The hardest levels, I believe, are those in which you need to ‘create a method to solve it’.
A good example is ‘No added colours or lemmings’ from Mayhem OL. the solution is a procedure not similar to any other yet in that game.

Another way is the old; “eliminate whatever is impossible and the solution will present itself”. While I can confirm this worked for me a few times, it’s doesn’t always work so well for me. Simply removing everything that’s impossible just makes it seem more impossible. :P

Genesis - Sunsoft 23 – Move on in two Separate Groups

50 lemmings
Save 100%
Release rate 50
3 minutes

1 blockers, 7 builders, 4 bashers

The solution I came up with seems slightly backroutish but I did use all the skills.

Good: Looks sort of simple at first but is in fact much harder than it looks. Requires some thought and planning. I like the design look as usual.
-I also like the title of most of the Genesis levels even though they're kind of strange.-

Bad:  Still getting tired of all these levels that have 5-10 builder and 1 or 2 basher/miner/digger. This one isn’t so bad though, at least there is a blocker too.
The yellow brick next to the steps in the middle is annoying to bash through correctly.

Level Design / Re: No Builders
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:31:12 PM »
no builders often makes you come up with unusual ways of getting to places and turning lemmings around. e.g. Tsueg's 'Rush Hour'. I like builderless levels, personally. Just because builder is the most used skill.

Thanks a lot for that list Akseli!
I forgot Bamboo Maze had no builders.  Anyway--this topic give me some more inspiration to make new levels. :D

Revolution has disappearing platforms too. I just accepted that that's part of the level so it doesn't count; however I'd like to try and find a way around it (level which include them)

11-9 Goonies 100%
11-11 Tanks a lot 100%
11-12 Two Laps final 100%
12-1 Green with Envy 100%* glitches
12-4 (no brainer)

Quote

edit: this refers to 12-1
One way is to invisibly dig next to the right side time door down to the area below that. (Be careful because it’s very easy to trigger the time door and kill lemmings). Then, down there, block them off but separate a acid lemming to go into the acid. You’ll notice this time door is glitchy; if lemmings fall through it from the right most side, it doesn’t count down. The acid lemming can climb to the right and close the door over the acid pool and the rest of the lemmings are free.

The other (theoretical) way I have (harder but slightly less glitchy) is to make the right (acid) entrance RR up to about 70 for 4 lemmings then back to 1. have 3 first lemmings come out build next to each other then the fourth one bashes then stops/builds to make a straight wall. Meanwhile make another lemming coming in a blocker very close to the wall. Next have yet another coming from the left build over the blocker. The idea is to make a tiny space to compact the lemmings so they can sneak through the time door.
While all this is happening the first 3 lemmings should be finished building. Let 1 go but turn around the rest (by building toward the time door; they’ll turn around) the two acid lemmings that turned around; have one bash toward the mass of lemmings but stop him so that there’s just 1 pixel wall blocking the lemmings.
Make a water lemming a climber to go right. After the 1 acid lemming and 1 water lemming goes to the right there should be “3” left on the door there.
On the route they continue on complete the simple tasks they have to do to make the way safe for any lemmings; then free the other lemmings by bashing through the thin wall you left for yourself. The crowd will sneaky past the time door and follow the long way to the balloon. Not sure how I’d try to save the last two lemmings; the blocker and the one bashing, he’d have to get stuck in the crowd somehow and that’s tricky. While bashing he becomes separated….

You could probably do the same procedure for the left side but since the lemmings are already facing right I did it this way. This way would use 1-less glitch then the above (no invisible digging)

:) thank you, thank you finally got it working.

I think I did visit the website a long time ago and it wasn't helpful but that could've changed by now obviously. It depends on who's there I guess, what I remember is a forum so...

(also in the instruction that come with DOSbox, it doesn't mention that last step. :-\ At least in the one I read)

thanks for the help, but nothing worked at all.
I can't get L1, Oh no, or L2 to work.

If I enter in the L2-....com fix thing it just brings up a "made by somebdy..." message. and nothing. Typing anything after that brings up: "<<< EXEC ERROR >>>"

does any of what I went through sound familiar? I mean do you do the same thing and it works or is my computer doing something different? Because it was always like this for me-- it's why I haven't used DOS box. Doing something different works for a minute but eventually runs into another problem. ???

thanks!
I don't remember exactly where I got that one, a site with a dark blue background I think...
I'll try Abandonia thanx

I've been trying to install Lemmings 2 now. That worked but now I'm facing the next problem. First simply entering folder\L2.exe doesn't work, which makes sense;; I need to install it.

So I entered the install.exe and install screen came up. I don't know which soundcard to select, mine isn't on there anyway, and after the installation options (the screens are colored) it goes back to black and says;
Lemmings 2 NOT installed
L2.INI preferences file modified,
Change directory to C:\Lem2\
Then type 'L2' to play

??? Everything is already in 'C':\Lem2\
Nothing else works after that.

[btw, entering L2.exe (both before AND after I "installed") brings up:

"Lemmings 2 loading... copyright etc...
xxxx bytes free in expanded memory
xxxx etc.
...then nothing and new prompt. :(
[and nothing after that works]
