Help & Guides / Re: Confused newbie question
« on: December 09, 2012, 07:46:06 PM »
Don't be at all ashamed that you're confused. There's very few people interested in Lemmings--that's why there is not a lot of help and discussion on the subject.
sadly, the current state of Lemmings is pretty bleak. But they're are plenty of ways to play Lemmings, none of them are amazing but at least they exist.

I don't know anything about Lemmings32  ??? never heard of it.

For help running Lemmix, first read this: http://www.lemmingsforums.com/index.php?topic=414.msg9334;topicseen#msg9334 and follow the instructions.

This will allow you to edit the game as well as play the original levels and user created levels.

I also recommend reading Eric Lang's page (the black colored website where you can download Lemmix) thoroughly. There's a lot of information you need to know.
and one Extremely Important thing: when using the editor; don't re-size the bottom panels. There's a glitch that makes it so you can no longer use hot keys then.

there's also Lemmini: http://lemmini.de/
you need Windows Lemmings to play this however, a CD game. but you can get the files necessary somewhere else I think. Windows Lemmings will actually work on most Operating Systems. (I have W7 and it works)

Look around this website; there's a bunch of programs and things at least mentioned. And Don't be afraid to post here if you need help. I would've found this community years ago but gave up on these programs at the time because they were too confusing and I couldn't find help on them.

Non-Lemmings Gaming / Legend of Zelda
« on: December 09, 2012, 12:58:25 AM »
I've been playing Legend of Zela Oracle of Season/Ages. I played Seasons first and now I'm playing Ages secret game. I really enojyed both, even more than Link's Awakening which is one of my favorites. (Link's Awakening actually inspired me to write a story (it has nothing to do with Zelda)). I like the whole secrets concept.

General Discussion / The way things go (video) question

This is part 2 of a 3 part video series about a Rube-Goldberg Machine. My personal favorite and truly amazing.
Anyway I posted part 2 because I'd like if someone could possibly explain what you think is happening around 8:00-9:00. I asked a lot of people now and nobody yet has a good answer.

General Discussion / Re: Read/reading any good books, lately?
« on: December 08, 2012, 08:44:00 PM »
I noticed everyone here seems to have lost interest in video games latley. :(
You could do what I do and procrastinate everything or do things slowly to the point where it takes months to read a book or video game then you don't get them all done too fast.  ;P (you probably shouldn't do that)

I'm currently reading the Dark Tower series by Stephen King. It's pretty epic. It can get a little slow in areas but then speeds up again, and it's strange.

If you like comedy I recommend stuff by David Sedaris--very funny. I'm reading 'When you are Engulfed in Flames' and I'd like to get 'Chipmunk seeks Squirrel'
Some other I've seen recommended on other forums:
How Not to Make the Same Mistake Once by Barry Farber
Uh-Oh and It Was on Fire When I Lay Down On It by Robert Fulghum

If your into strange and crazy there's chuck Palanuik. He's the author of Fight Club (of which the movie was based on). His stuff is pretty different but can be gross.

I've also recently read the 'Myst' books. Written by the same people that made the video game. I wasn't expecting much but the first one so far turned out to be very good. There's three in total.

If you like sci-fi or fantasy; anything by Stephen King. (If you don't like fantasy there's 'Different Season' his one of few non-fantasy books that contains 'The shawshank Redemption'. Excellent book.
Also Michael Chrichton. Two of my favorite books of all time; 'Andromeda Strain' and 'Sphere'.

There's a ton but I'll just make a short list of great one's I've read.
1984 - George Orwell
2001 A Space Oddysy - Arthur C. Clark
White Fang - Jack London
Hatchet, The Transal Saga by Gary Paulsen
Physics of the Impossible - Michio Kaku

It looks nice! The graphics are well done. I’m curious what the 7 skills are.

I don’t have an iphone. (I’m waiting for the virtual reality implants to come out. ;P )
But if it’s available to test on the web I’d be interested to try.

why are the first three levels all the same?

I also like the builders building into eachother. There's few other levels (that I've played) that utilize that.
Could you please identify some levels using that trick? :) To clarify, I meant that kind of bridge which lemmings can travel both directions (and are supposed to), not for example, that builder from right knocks his head to the bridge from left, and then lemmings can walk only to the right.
Offhand I can't think of levels using the exact trick. I'm thinking Pieuw maybe had some? I thought I saw videos of at least one. [...maybe it was Gronklings :XD: ]

Tseug's "Stuff in the Way" has two lemmings build toward each other but the one must be underneath to turn around.

Gronklems #5 - Level 7 – Where Clouds are Made

Lemmings: 10
Save: 8
Release rate: 88
Time: 1 minutes
Skills: 8 climbers, 1 floater, 1 bomber, 1 blocker, 2 builders, 1 basher, 1 digger

Good: A very tough level that looks tough. I like stalling the lemmings with climbers like that. (any multi-task type of situation like that I usually like a lot) Of course the decoration and the clouds are really awesome! I also like how you made the big areas of brick more interesting by using variety of small blocks.

Bad: Nothing major. I think my solution may be a back route so I attached a video replay of it (avi file, sorry if it's big). If it is, it was still tough to find.

------------
I think Restoration in Progress is very tough (I haven’t beaten it yet).
And I don’t think it looks messy at all.

Well, I would have said something about Gronkling's special entrance from where lemmings "fall facing left" (he has used that trick also in two other levels) and then this lovely "builders encountering each other" trick,

:o I didn't even realize that. Okay, how did you do that Gronkling?

I also like the builders building into eachother. There's few other levels (that I've played) that utilize that.

For a moment I thought what Luis did too. In some cases, numbers in a list come up 1, 10, 2, 3...  isn't that stupid? ???

Gronklems #5 - Level 4 – Brick City

Lemmings: 30
Save: 30 (100%)
Release rate: 99
Time: 2 minute
Skills: 2 climber, 2 floaters, 6 builders, 4 bashers

Good: I like the decoration and the symmetrical style a lot. The solution is neat and simple.

Bad: It can be a bit tricky to get the timing right to save 100%

If you want to add any comments, Akseli, you always can.  :)

really nice  thank you.

It's really convenient to have the level.ini file. Great.  :)

I could look into noting down which levels are applicable and which are not.

I think positive because like you said there's the "Lol tru dat bitch" spearkers as well as the grammar nazis and you can meet both and all kinds of people on the internet. In general it exposes you to a lot more knowledge easily or maybe quickly is a better word.
I like learning about how other people speak.

Somewhere in this video I think they talk about this sort of thing. (If not, one of the lectures by this professor he talks about it somewhere, but briefly. Even if you can't find it these lectures are really interesting. (To me anyway...)

I said that the Internet overall probably has a negative effect on people's use of the English language.  Prior to the Internet, if you wanted to read the news, you had to get a newspaper or magazine.  Similarly, if you wanted to research something, you needed a book or an encyclopedia.  All of these older media are copy-edited before they are published, which removes most grammatical mistakes.

With the Internet, anyone can post anything online for everyone to read, and much less of what is posted online is properly copy-edited.  The result is that a greater percentage of the material that we read is informal and is therefore littered with grammatical errors, colloquialisms, and shorthand.  For a person like me who does a lot of formal writing and knows how to use proper grammar when necessary this is okay, but there are many people out there whose knowledge of grammar is only as good as the material that they read.

You have some good points. However, I disagree because of a few things;
First of all when Wikipedia first came out all the teachers (I guess a lot still do) said “this is terrible… an encyclopedia that anyone can edit, it goes without saying that it’s useless. Any moron can put a total lie up and it’ll be recognized as truth.

But theoretically if the admins of a site like Wiki are large in number and variety and diligent this type of encyclopedia could be much, much more accurate and effective than a book. First of all a book is written by a small group of people who claim to be knowledgeable in some area of expertise. But they could be wrong. And once the book is printed, that’s it. The internet can be edited over and over again, as it needs to be and should. And you have experts from basically around the whole world to verify knowledge much better imo.

But back on the subject of grammar, I never liked strict grammar in the first place. For one thing anybody can say something that isn’t a sentence like this:
“Where’s my phone?”
“On the table.” <<that’s not a complete sentence but you understood what I said just fine.

I’m not so sure about other languages but English has a crap load of problems.

They’re
There
Their

Do I really need to explain? Who invented this crap? Who said ‘yeah those three words are fine, they’re not confusing at all let’s stick with them. Foreign speakers won’t have any trouble learned our language. Or how about silent “e” or the I before E except that rule doesn’t always hold either? “comb”, “déjà-vu” < that’s not even really English!!.
I should say that the main reason I don't  feel obliged to use correct grammar is because of all these ridiculous twisted rules. Not much in English is very rational. When learning the language, you can't "sound-it-out" like they said in Elementary. You can't  expect anything.

Japan has two characters that change under circumstances. German has something too I forget what it is, but from what I’ve seen English is one of the worst. Why did it become the most spoken language ever? (rhetorical question) :XD:

Japanese has a lot of neat things, one is; KA at the end of a sentence makes it a question. think how useful that is. You can just add ka at the end of any sentence and make it a question. Can’t do that in English.
[end of rant]

I forgot to mention in the results but 7 people participated (in round 9)

I picked Capybara in spite specifically because of geoo subjecting me to “capybara porn” in the IRC. ;P Yes, I know I clicked on the Link but I wasn’t sure it was actual… ya know. It could’ve been something else. Some funny cartoon or something.  :XD:

I was initially going to answer f#ckamabob but remembered I made that word up. There are definitely more creative swear words out there I would’ve like to see. I keep forgetting the goal of this game is guess popular answers though.

I'm interested. However, you should note that some levels will not be convertible. As (I'll mention ISteve's because I've played some of his) some levels rely on either glitches or mechanics specific to Lemmix. Either we'll have to change some aspect of the level or leave it behind.
