Bad: Hmm I remember there was an acid pool which could be emptied by pulling the lever, but that's completely unnecessary. Or was that there to introduce beginners how the levers work? :P Then it's ok.

actually it’s not totally unnecessary—the acid pool cannot be crossed unless you build over it. You’re probably remembering that lemmings will walk “on air” over empty acid pools. This is a phenomenon throughout the entire game. It only happens with acid pools.

Quote
When an acid pool is drained, the lemmings don't fall into the drained pool, but will instead walk across the top.  The exception to this is if an acid lemming is walking on the acid while it is draining, in which case the lemming will go down with the acid. (LemSteven)

I forgot to mention; there’s a good walkthrough for this entire game on youtube. Which is a handy way to get info and pictures too :).

(in priohiko’s video he builds over the acid pool… either he just doesn’t know about this or his game is different)

5-6 Swings Both Ways

Lemmings: 20
Save: 16
Release rate: 5 and 10, but changeable
Time: 10:00

Skills: 20 floaters, 10 bombers, 10 blockers, 10 builders, 10 bashers

Good: Despite appearing as a simple early level it can actually be a bit tougher than it seems at first. If you do it the easy way (with blockers) you save only the minimum. I like using two different kinds of lemmings to make contrast.

Bad: this level annoyed me a little when I was a kid. It’s the first one where you need to get some timing right. Also doing challenges for this level is possible but can be frustrating.

well here you go. [my Christmas present  ;P ] I played through a few of them. So far they are pretty good. They’re easy but I only played 4 or 5 so far.  (...I should've put Christmas music to it... naw (i don't like most Christmas music))

oh... hmm. Mental process; Are you sure you have the right level? If so, then I guess I back-routed that level.  :-\ makes me really curious as to how this trick fits in.  ???
ISteve07, level 8. Are you saying that you didn't need bridge built from two directions? :P

no, at least not in anything like this trick we’re talking about here; [two lemmings building toward each other] Unless I'm just misunderstanding.
Quote
I had one come down the narrow shaft, turn around and build left all the way to the wall, then build up to the top arrows and bash.… [the hard part, I thought, was figuring out you need to have two lemmings fall down close to each other and sacrifice one to the trap]

Yep, pixel precise skill assignment has to be done three times. Did you realise to use replaying to make the whole execution easier?

yeah I just get frustrated easily. Maybe I'll still solve it someday but I didn't want to hold up the review because of it.
I'll be playing the last level today, and hopefully I'll solve it sometime soon. :)

I give up on the level 9, so anybody else (including you Akseli) can review it if you like.

Quote
It's because I find the glitch very annoying and just don't feel like doing it. (sorry Gronkling) After trying a million times and not progressing because of pixel precision I get annoyed very easily. I like the layout and rest of the level however.

At first I liked levels using glitches, maybe because it was new to me. But now I don't. Especially glitches that are difficult to pull off.

I'll have some time for lemmings too; so what I decided is to have you guys recommend me a pack and I'll play that one (barring I can successfully). To give you more incentive I'll record myself playing, for amusement.  :P
Just tell me a pack to play and I'll give it a try.

I downloaded cheapo awhile ago and gave up on it. I couldn't figure out how to make it not-fullscreen and the resolution was terrible. Plus I'm just used to the other numerous programs we already have.

Level Design / Challenge based level creation
« on: December 22, 2012, 04:15:38 AM »
I have an old levelpack half way done, but I’m probably going to release it as is (about 5 levels)

…Because I’ve recently had an epiphany. I fell away from designing levels for a number of reasons but I think mostly because it got boring. I lost inspiration and felt like the ideas had run out. I also feel the game in general has reached its limitations for me. (maybe not so for other people, and that’s great, but for me it pretty much has)

Since a more complicated game engine doesn’t exist (or at least won’t for the very near future) I can instead make use of another great idea that is on this forum; challenges.

I’m going to design levels specifically designed for a particular challenge. For example; a ‘the 1-skill-per-lemming’. In some way (probably in the title or level pack title) I’ll make it clear that this is the goal of the level. So if my levels appear ‘easy’ at first glance; it’s probably one of these.
I think there’s a lot of potential to be seen here. [and I don't care that it can't be enforced]

So whaddaya think? Anybody care to join me?  :)

no fair, I'm hungry!

wow, you really go all out for lemmings  ;P That looks very nice. And it has a lot of icing. I love icing.

Now I feel kind of wimpy; my involvement with lemmings pretty much ends at the computer desk.  :D

yay, somebody else to review. I too, as this is my favorite lemmings game. We must review entire lemming’s library! :P

[quick comment on Sergeant Bash; you can actually totally ignore the saw and only lose 1 lemming!]

5-4 The Crowded House

Lemmings: 10
Save: 5
Release Rate: 39 (fixed (I think))
Time: 10:00

Skills: 5 bombers, 5 blockers, 10 builders, 5 bashers, 10 diggers

Good: I like the symmetric style. It’s also an interesting layout, for an early level. It’s a short step up in difficulty.

Bad: I think the save requirement is a little low. But then the total # of lemmings are low as well. The RR being fixed seems useless here. Plus strange RR of 39? This starts a bizarre trend in this game. Maybe they wanted to annoy people with OCD?  ;P

I think this trick is much more common. Another good example: In Insane Steve's "Mental Process" two lemmings have to build into each other from the opposite directions so that the built bridge would reach far enough.

oh... hmm. Mental process; Are you sure you have the right level? If so, then I guess I back-routed that level.  :-\ makes me really curious as to how this trick fits in.  ???

In 'Stuff in the way' the timing is pretty precise and tricky.

anyway (back on topic :P), tomorrow I'll try Gronkling's again. (I haven't lately)

^The Abyss. For some reason that level had me stumped when I was a kid. ??? no idea why since I had an easier time with much harder levels.

I find "Lems at Loggerheads" decent, basic puzzle for the beginners, and that's one of my favourite easy levels of this game. In my opinion there aren't many good puzzles for beginners in original games, for example in Fun and Tricky ratings, and ONML is tough already right from the Crazy rating.
yeah I agree. There were few good ones from the old games. Few like Lems at Loggerheads. Btw, do you know what the title means? or where it refers to?

5-2 Kriss Kross

Lemmings: 30
Save: 20
Release rate: 15
Time: 5 minutes
Skills: 40 blocker, 40 bombers

Good: it’s simple and fun. I like the “kriss kross” way the lemming must move about the level. There are also a number of different solutions. This level is fun to do challenge for. It is possible to complete three challenges at once!
[this title also reminds me of my childhood in school. I once had to dance to music that 'tells' you what to do' by singing "sliiiide to the right...sliiiide to the left...kriss kross!]

Bad: it's a little bare looking.

hey Akseli, do you know about finlays+LemSteven’s spreadsheet? (I attached it to this post). It Lists all levels of almost every lemmings game and info on them. You can just use that for reference, (it’s what I’m doing. But I also sometimes play the level too, to refresh)
-----------------
4-6 Lems at Loggerheads

Lemmings: 10
Save: 5
Release rate: 5
Time: 10 minutes
Skills: 10 climbers, 2 floaters, 2 builders

Good: A good beginner level (I guess we’ll be saying that a lot.) Its generic comment but I can’t think of anything else. Thought, I do like having to make them all climbers, something that's not done often in the early levels of older lemmings games.

Bad: Kind of boring.

this level is very similar in layout to “Let’s play catch”

there were only 3 wise men not 4. geoo spotted this first and gets the 0.5 point. Almost everyone else did spot it, apparently knowing their bible; Jesus gives you a +1.
Actually, the bible never says how many wise men there were. The number three became attached to the legend because there were three gifts.

that would've made a MUCH BETTER easter egg.  Proxima gets +10.

CRAP----- What i did was... I was making a chart listing all the points earned and wrote "1" for winning instead of 1.5.  :XD: :XD: :XD:

@Steve: your score should be 1, not 0. sorry

[I seem to be good at making questions that have little to-no impact on the score what-so-ever  ???  :D ]

And I agree that the eater egg was too easy, but I was afraid of making a tough one that no-one might get. Plus, since I'm not religious at all, the idea that the "3 wismen story" is extremely well known didn't occur to me. I love old comedy routines but don't love the bible what can I say...  :XD: :P

(I didn't use the spreadsheet except for the top section, too lazy) yeah I know that's really lazy ;P )

probably nobody noticed or cared but that question was based off the whole "Let's play money making game!" from the first Zelda game.

should I mention the password on the chat or.....

Tech & Research / Re: Lemmix new database
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:12:03 PM »
I haven't thought of using the giant net and then use erasers. There's 397 terrains and adding more will stop it from saving. Terrain number 3 and 6 were used a lot, just so I won't place nets in areas where their not suppose to be, like the missing pieces in the picture. This is another one of those 36 PSP levels by the way and this one is the most confusing.

here ya go: see my attached picture.
All I did was spawn (thinking garry's mod) insert a big mesh piece. Then use a couple of single small straight 'wires'. Check 'erase' and put them so they cover up just one direction of lines. They'll cover up too much, so put in another one (not erased) [facing other direction] over that.  :)

u may still end up using quite a bit of pieces but I don't think nearly as many

I can't make "Back of the net" in Lemmix. I found out it has a terrain limit. :( Can this terrain limit be increased by updating this editor? This level has a lot of nets and some of them have pieces missing, so I couldn't just spam the big net, which is number 14, so I had to use a lot of those small ones.

are you sure it's because of a terrain limit? How many terrain pieces are in your level?

Realize, you could also use the big net and just use an eraser piece to cover up that spot you need. ;) that's what I'd do.

The reason I'm asking is because I remember seeing a level by someone that has a RIDICULOUS amount of terrain. (it was also a crystal level) with spiderwebs stacked on top of each other so much that there's no space in between them. (well.. it's kind of hard to describe but I'm pretty sure they had hundreds of pieces.
