Reviews / Level Review – DoveLems
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:00:27 PM »
----this is a review for the user created DoveLems-----

DoveLems is a comprehensive, 125-level Lemmini pack made by Dodochacalo.

You can get the current version of DoveLems (December 31st 2012) here, with an ini-file for playing levels smoothly.

I recommend that our reviews are based on that version so there wouldn't be any contradictions.

Here is Dodochacalo's YouTube channel, where you can get all of Dodochacalo's levels. (note, however the levelpacks obtained here lack the ini-files)

Rules and review format are same than in other review games, but I guess we aren't too strict with them. :) Now let's have fun and review this large, excellent custom levelpack!

Plain 1 – Again our Famous Lemmings!

Lemmings: 20
Save: 20%
RR: 70
Time: 5 minutes

skills: 10 miners

good: it’s nice easy level to begin with. The art and design is really well done and original which continues throughout this whole set.

bad: I tad precision based seems bad to start off the game.

He said that backroute in Roundabout is fine, since the level was suppose to be easy. I'm still playing mobius1. I was busy with other games. According to my solution in "Jacob's Ladder", the level has five Bashers, but you only need two of them and it was a test of trying to pay attention to the Lemmings on both sides. It was fun, even though it hurt my arms, because I wasn't using the rewind feature and no pausing to see which Lemming is the climber.

Jacob's Ladder is pretty much busted. I attempted numerous fixes to it months ago when I first made it but nothing worked and I eventually gave up. I needs some major changes to ensure the intended solution but I don't really feel like doing that at the moment. I might someday.

I guess I'll play the PSP levels now. They can't be too hard since they weren't user made.  ;P

6-1 The Iron Curtain

Lemmings: 30
Save: 20
RR: 10
Time: 10 minutes

skills: 1 climber, 1 floater, 5 bombers, 5 blockers, 5 builders, 5 bashers, 2 miners, 2 diggers

good: introduces the retractable wall. A number of different possible routes and not real demanding. It’s also fun to dig down and let the water lemmings fall from very high.

bad: You don’t actually need to use the retractable wall at all if you use the right path, making it not really the best introduction level. (That’s the path I used when I first played) An odd skill set for an early level, kind of sparse.

I can review some of Dovelems, I've played a little of it. [Actually I found (I think) a backroute in one already  :XD: ]

sorry for neglecting to review a level I planed on. I got into other things and didn't have time to play. (Of course at any time anybody else inclined could have reviewed as well...)

First episode of the DoveLems Let's Play: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol4HuCnu4aI

I highly doubt I'm going to be finding any backroutes. I grew up with Lemmings and ONML and got good enough to beat those, but if future episodes are any indication, I don't think I'm quite on the level that you guys are  :D

oh wow, you're roundthewheel - haha, a famous person is here  :D

over on the chips challenge community they let's play each others sets all the time. It's about time somebody do so here.

Rrrrrr! You pizza-centerd guys didn't want to name the tasty steak from the bum shop?

2nd place still very good, congrats to möbius for doing really great on this one, and thanks to the host!

-- Simon

since the bum shop question comes after the food question; I wouldn’t have thought of that unless I went back to think about it after the bum question. After mentioning pizza earlier I thought for sure everybody would think of pizza.

I’m really surprised everybody said yes on the breakfast thing. And ccexplore even chooses “yes” just for the feud. I thought the general consensus is most people don’t eat breakfast (even though it is very good for you and is the most important of the day). Maybe that’s only a thing in my area. I know America, especially the south is more unhealthy on average than many other countries around the world.

actually, yeah a lot of them require glitches. In many packs I’ve played, not all but one or a few of the levels inside use glitches, but few of them are all glitch related. >>>edit: I really shouldn't say most do; I've played much less than half in total.
I’ve recently started playing bulletride and so far his haven’t used glitches however I only got past 2 levels so far (his is pretty difficult).

my levels don’t use glitches (but you already knew that). thanks for playing my sets! I can easily fix that backroute to the first one by removing the blocker. (come to think of it I don't know why I included a blocker in the first place... :-\

I recommend ISteve10, Clam Spammer’s sets… Insane Steve made notes with most of his sets which lets you know if a glitch is required or not. Those can be found on that grey site. (Serj-Gerjen something.net) Something tells me Nortaneous and finlay don’t use a lot of glitches but I’m not sure.

here are some recommendations: http://www.lemmingsforums.com/index.php?topic=521.0

I'm just curious how did the trend of having 10 levels in your set get started?

also; any Christmas levels are not custlem right?

-----------------------
Okay… I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for or not but here are some things that I would think make editing easier;

1- first of all; have selectable hotkeys for everything/everything important anyway. So that every user can set his/her own personal hotkeys

2- have a specific hotkeys or buttons to add terrain/ object/ steel respectively.
-every time you add terrain, the previous selected terrain gets added instead of the first one on the list.
3- undo/redo buttons!

4- if possible, it might be nice to have a feature that automatically adds correctly sized steel to the ‘steel-like terrain’ when it gets added.

and to somehow add steel-like-terrain to the bubble set. I think I could take the steel pieces in rock [for example] and just adjust their color slightly to make it look more suited.

thanks for finding the back routes. And thanks a lot for the comments guys. I updated the pack now and also added another new level. I couldn't view your solutions to Three's company (Akseli) because either you played the old version or I changed something and mess it up. [I added some decoration]. If there's still a major backroute you can let me know.

I actually made those levels months ago, but the one I just added I made now.
------

yes, thank you for making those PSP levels. Some of them look interesting. They still don't compare to the Genesis level though, I think. (I haven't played them yet so I should wait to comment)

Even though the PSP has up-to-date graphics, I don't think I would like it better. I guess I'm old-fashioned but I'm really starting to like the graphics of the original game. I'd like to get more artistic in making levels with them.

the only level with a backroute was 2.  :'( (tears of joy  :D )

I updated it, now should work better. At least digging into the top of that pole isn't possible anymore.
Thanks for playing.

-unrelated note- Luis found another backroute to going down, from my second level pack so I may be updating that at some time.

square f4 on a chessboard. I'm ~99% sure the "house" is a chessboard but not sure what the rivers and stuff are about.

So that puzzle contest I was planning is completed and actually started now, you can try it out at http://ispuzzlecontest4.proboards.com/index.cgi if you want to give it a whirl.

you're right!

Quote
the house is indeed a chessboard. All you need to do is follow the "cubits" and clues of walking around the chessboard.. the alters are rooks, the "Preist" s the bishop.
The water is just a diversion. I actually got this entire thing from something I saw in the bible once.  I really liked the sound of it so I adapted it into a puzzle. :D

since it seems you solved it pretty quickly how do you think I could make it tougher?

-----
as my other puzzle.... it may be somewhat unfair. I'm not sure, I'll have to take another good look at it.

I can't log into the puzzle website for some reason. I'll just try making a new account. I looked at the first puzzle but haven't worked on it hard yet. Do you mind if I post this one and other puzzles like it on your forum?

Sorry about being gone, I've been a bit busy recently. I'll reveal round 15 tonight (that is, in a few hours, one I've gotten everything for the puzzle contest I'm starting today up).

aw, a puzzle contest, how come you didn't tell us about it? (maybe you did in chat but I wasn't around...) can you give some links or something?

and happy new year everybody

Tech & Research / Re: Ideas for Lemmings gameplay features
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:13:22 PM »
hey, thank you for posting with ideas :)

I like the turner idea in a 2D game (1-way blocker). Hadn’t thought of that.

Some of the ideas for skills you mentioned have already been done in other games, like Lix for one. (wrapping around) and skills like batter.
Personally I dislike having more than 8 skills at a time, but I still like hearing ideas.

-------

I forgot to read your post, Clam. I like the idea of having challenge specific related options.
For the single lemming challenge, this could be easily applied by having only 1 lemming come from the entrance and having all the rest be “pre-placed Lemmings; uncontrollable lemmings”.
1-skill per lemming could be done with having lemmings of a different color or numbers on them. With this you could even have lemmings that can be only assigned a certain number of skills. They have a counter above them, and when that runs out they can no longer be assigned skills. Or lemmings that can only be assigned skills facing a certain direction.

I think we should have a separate thread for discussion of multiplayer; (that is if any good amount of discussion ever results here)

thanx for the comments :)
Unfortunately I probably won’t be talking in my videos. I tried that a while ago and found 1, I suck at it and 2, it’s a lot more difficult than I thought and would take a lot of practice and/or fiddling around.

I'll try to play the rest I guess... sometime soon. Despite it being holidays I'm busy anyway.  :(
