Title: Level of the Year 2020: Playing Phase
Post by: IchoTolot on March 13, 2021, 01:08:32 PM
Alright, so nominations are now closed. Before we open the voting, we first offer a period to play the levels again, to familiarize yourself with those you haven't yet played and review those you have.

The list of nominated levels can be found in the nominations topic (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5412.0), I see no need to duplicate it here. It also contains information on where to find these levels outside of my compilation here.

Download links:

- Levelpack of all nominated levels. (https://www.dropbox.com/s/u6kdq7tlj8zi0xw/LOTY2020.zip?dl=1)

Every author with 3 or more levels in this category gets an own rank in the pack. At the end there is a mixed rank for the leftover levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.
Exception: I put GigaLem's and Nessy's levels in a combined rank as their levels were closely tied up in Festival Millas 2020 anyway.

- Music tacks (https://www.dropbox.com/s/8pc55mdvazli6cz/LOTY2020_music.zip?dl=1)

The custom music tacks of the nominated levels. Extract the zip file inside the main NL folder.

- Replay collection (https://www.dropbox.com/s/vah5um6raidy6cn/LOTY2020_replays.zip?dl=1)

Some gathered replays from a few of the nominated levels. As this was optional, only a part of the pack is covered here.

Playing phase will end: April 30th 2021

General level feedback and solution replays can be posted here in the topic if you want! Have fun playing! :)

If there are any errors I've made in the collection, don't hesitate to inform me here! As a reminder: This pack is nothing more than an optional service I provide as an attempt to make all nominated levels more easily accessible.

I played levels from introduction pack and they were far more difficult than I thought they would. Aren't they too difficult for introduction pack ?
I don't think there are major backroutes in my solutions but I have a cloner left on Chekerboard's Crossing and a climber and a bomber left on Victory Lap.

I noticed that @Turrican's level "Dockside Warehouse" has some buttons but the exit is not a locked exit. It will be an eaxy fix though ;)

@Armani Yes, some of the levels of the Introduction pack are more advanced than they need to be. In the case of Checkerboard and Victory Lap, there's a reason why they're in the Advanced Training rank of the pack :P The main reason is because Icho feels the trick(s) needed on those two levels are absolutely necessary to teach, and I certainly agree to an extent. More specifically, the former is a level to provide more training with the trick(s) needed in the level before it in the pack without spelling out what they are because it already is pointed out in the pretext of the previous level. In Victory Lap's case, it's currently the final level of the Advanced Training rank, as well as the final level of the Introduction pack, that tells the player to use what they learned in the 3-4 levels before it in the pack to solve it.

In any case, Icho will be updating the pack some more due to some feedback that he's gotten in the meantime. Also, there will need to be some slider/laser levels added when these skills eventually make it into the stable NL version in the future.

Unfortunately , that is because the L2 tileset doesn't contain a "locked exit" object. I am not sure about how to fix this issue.

@Armani

Your solutions are ok, but you used a very precise alternative in "Victory Lap". But without the lessons building up to certain levels it's no surprise that they are challenging as you do not expect the tricks.

There is a reason it's "Advanced"!

In any case expect "Checkerboards Crossing" to be changed as I do plan to simplify it.

Here is the version 1.02 of "Dockside Warehouse" . Now the level has a locked exit ( I used a locked exit from another tileset ) .

V2 of Secretly Greatly.
Fixed a backroute found by kaywhyn.
Attached solution replay still works. :8:()[:

As a little preview to the next intro pack patch: Here (and also in the updated pack) are new versions for 3 of my levels. :)

Played Willem's levels :D
I already played Lemminas before.
The only thing I cared about this time, is minimizing the time taken.

Thank Armani, I have updated the records table (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=4679.msg80167#msg80167) with your new times :lemcat:

Solved Turrican's level.
Two solution attached. And both have several leftover skills.

Both solutions are backroutes , but one of these is close to the intended solution.

As a result , here is "Dockside Warehouse" version 1.03

The change in this version , compared to the previous one : I have added some steel.

Solved Arty's levels

Two solutions for Minimalism(first one save a platformer and second one save a platformer and a bomber) and one solutions for other two levels.
My favorite level of these is definitely The sea. Nice puzzle level with no terrain at all. :D

Also solved David's levels

I got two different solutions for Lavomatique.
I enjoyed all three levels but I especially love Soucoupes violentes.

Here is the version 1.04 of "Dockside Warehouse" . This version contains a preemptive backroute fix .

Also , the replay , that I had uploaded for the previous versions , doesn't work in this version of the level , so I have uploaded also , the updated version of the replay ( the intended solution remains the same ) .

Hello Gigalem/Nessy,

I have solved the four Festival Millas 2020 levels that were nominated for LOTY2020. Replays attached.

GigaLem and Nessy 1 - Ayearinruin Wow, this one looks quite intimidating and difficult. Still, I persevered and was finally able to solve it after much struggling. It looks open-ended from the skillset, but it's not! Ended up using all the skills save for a few climbers.

GigaLem and Nessy 2 - mircaleonianave Nowhere near as difficult as the previous level, but it's still somewhat challenging. Probably my favorite level in this set. I think I did a few parts unintended, especially one of the stacker usages. Probably slightly overcomplicated the solution as well.

GigaLem and Nessy 3 - All the Right Moves The biggest backroute ever :P Surely it's not supposed to be THIS easy, considering these levels come from the final two ranks of Festival Millas 2020. Didn't use any shimmiers.

GigaLem and Nessy 4 - Send us an angel This one was quite a difficult one. In my unsuccessful attempts, I kept trying things and kept being a skill short. Seems like my solution is mostly intended, as I checked the replay after I solved this level. The only difference is because of the way I used the platformer I was able to save everyone rather than lose 1 :P Thus, blocker leftover. However, I must say that the miner/digger are super precise. Then again, since it's in the most difficult rank of the pack, perhaps that's to be expected.

Overall, nice job with these 4 levels and I definitely need to take a look at Festival Millas 2020 sometime. I still need to go through Festival Millas 2018 and FM2019 themselves, though ;)

Solved all of the LOTY2020 contest nominated levels. My entire LOTY 2020 replay collection is attached. The replays are by level title rather than the rank/level position name, as it's just a hassle to remember which level was which, especially the level pack they came from.

Also links to the LP videos where I show off my solutions to the LOTY 2020 levels.

Part 1:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X45PkuKxquo&list=PLbp2m4KlFpJtMnhs7r88FQV8gwj8gIn64&index=1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X45PkuKxquo&list=PLbp2m4KlFpJtMnhs7r88FQV8gwj8gIn64&index=1)

Part 2:

Part 3:

Fortunately, I have already played almost all of these levels. Besides the 4 Gigalem's and Nessy's levels from the Festival Millas 2020 pack in the previous post that I haven't played until last week, I haven't played two of Armani's levels, both of which are previous LDC levels, with Secretly, Greatly! (single level that Armani originally wanted to be a contest level but he submitted another level in its place) I have played before, just didn't resolve the most recent version, as well as DireKrow's Shoestring Operation and Turrican's level, so really only 6 levels that I haven't played before and hence needed to solve, plus a resolve.

Out of the levels that I haven't played and solved, I think Armani's Breaking the Cycle will need a bit of a fix, as I checked his intended solution after solving and mine is very different, although quite fiddly and messy. Possibly Turrican's level as well, although my solution uses the waiting game to get the right spacing/timing. It was quite a difficult level for me.

Armani's The Gaema Plateau took me the longest to solve. I kept being a skill short, and I can definitely understand why Icho was stuck on this one too. Luckily, I just kept coming back and persevering and finally realized something that would help me solve the level. This is also one of my favorites!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, I absolutely liked DireKrow's Shoestring Operation level. I can certainly see why this was a LDC winner. Really good 1-of-everything level that uses a lot of really neat tricks. Even though this level ended up taking me longer than it needed to, a lot of the parts were quite easy to figure out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All in all, great levels these LOTY2020 are ;) Nice work to everyone whose levels from 2020 got nominated.

@Kaywhyn: Good job on your solution , but unfortunately , it is a small backroute , so in this case , it doesn't work with the latest version of the level ( the version 1.04 ) .

It's a pretty good solution , but it contains a move , that I have blocked it in the version 1.04 , ( as a preemptive backroute fix ) .

Yea, you're right, Turrican. Once again, I forgot to redownload the pack and overwrite the contents in my NL directory before I solved/recorded my solutions. Thought I had the newest version of all levels. Apparently I missed yours. I see the change that was made going from the old version I had to v1.04 and know exactly which part of my solution was blocked. I will look at the newest version at a later time and see if I can resolve it. If anything, I think it'll simply be a slight tweak to a few parts of my solution while avoiding the unnecessary long waiting game I used in my solution. I will likely rerecord the LP videos with my updated solutions, although in this case I will likely simply show off the new solutions to the changed levels only, as there isn't really a point if a lot of them are unchanged anyway. Not to mention the structure I used the videos ended up being nearly an hour long :P

@IchoToloT: Intended solution. Good job!

Your solution has two small differences , compared to mine , but it is intended.

Turrican's level V4 resolved. 1 stacker leftover. Almost the same solution as last time, just without the long waiting game.
Title: Re: Level of the Year 2020: Playing Phase

Here is the version 1.05 of "Dockside Warehouse" . This version contains another preemptive backroute fix . The change compared to the previous version : I have removed a stacker .

The replay , that I had uploaded for the previous versions , doesn't work in this version of the level , so I have uploaded also , the updated version of the replay ( the intended solution has one small change , compared to the solution of the previous versions ) .

About the solutions :

@ Kaywhyn : Intended solution. Good job ! Also , your solution works in the new version of the level .

@ IchoTolot : You had used the intended method , but unfortunately your replay doesn't work in the new version , due to this preemptive fix . But your solution will work again if you do a small change to it .

All rightie, one final video before the voting begins, where I once again show off my solutions, alongside the author's intended solution, to a few select levels, meaning I only show off solutions to some levels. Here, the levels I show are simply for the ones where I know my solution isn't intended or even if mine is acceptable, I'm curious as to what the intended solution is. In case anyone is wondering, only one of Armani's, all 4 of Gigalem's and Nessy's, 3 of WillLem's levels, and a level each by Duuddu (in his case, I show off Icho's solution after I show off my solution to the level, you can see Icho's solution in his LP video as well ;)) and DireKrow and Flopsy and Turrican I show off in this video. If you want to see my solutions I found for the other levels, watch the other parts of my LOTY 2020 LP :P

Anyway, here is the link to the final video of the LOTY 2020 LP

Part 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OySQqML5waI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OySQqML5waI)

As for the replays, I've already attached my replay collection a few posts above, hence I feel no need to reattach them here, particularly since they'll be the exact same replays anyway.

Expect the voting phase to kick-off sometime during the weekend (hopefully :P).

I now got the picture links from Nessy and still need to create groups, make the topic etc.

Just a quick info on the current status. ;)
