Title: [NeoLemmix] Save-'em-up Contest #2 (Open Choice)
Post by: namida on March 12, 2021, 08:48:52 PM
Entries are now closed.
Skill selection is now closed.

Alright, well, the last save-em-up was a blast, but it was very inconclusive as to which pack is the preference for the next contest so - I'm going to go with the option that allows for all of them.

So, to enter, pick four levels. The rules when nominating levels are:
- You must pick specific levels. You cannot ask "pick at random" or pick less than four. (This is because having random selection to fill the gaps would not be practical for open-choice.)
- At least three of your nominations must be levels created by someone other than yourself.
- You cannot nominate a level someone else has already nominated, nor a level that has the same or near-same layout (repeats, or near-repeats like the Just A Minute levels) as one someone has already nominated.
- In order to be eligible a level must (a) have at least one entrance, and (b) have already been released on new-formats at the time this topic was created.

Once entries are closed, I will compile the final list of levels for this contest by selecting 20 levels at random from the levels that entrants have picked. If there are less than 25 selected levels (due to less than 7 entrants), entrants will be asked to nominate an additional number of levels each, such that the total number of levels nominated is at least 25.

Entrants must then each select a skillset. This skillset should be submitted via PM, not posted publicly. You may only reveal your skillset publicly once the playing phase begins. Your skillset may be any eight skills of your choice, except that you may only pick up to four of the skills that are on the following list: Platformer, Builder, Stacker, Basher, Fencer, Miner, Digger.

To clarify here, the timing for selecting your skillset will be "after entries close, but before the final level list is revealed". So, you will know what the candidate levels are, but not exactly which ones are going to be selected.

Once I have received skillsets from all entrants, I will reveal the list of levels, and this is where the competition really begins! Your goal will be to play through the levels, using the set of skills you have selected, and try to save as many lemmings as possible. Across the entire set (NOT per-level), you may use up to 25 of each skill; and you do not need to meet each level's save requirement for your result on the level to count. In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker will be fewest total skills used.

Some changes will be made to the levels:
- All lemmings will be set to normal lemmings (not neutrals or zombies)
- Every level will have 50 lemmings
- All lemming limits on entrances / exits will be removed, as will all preplaced lemmings
- For technical reasons (re: replay autosaving), save requirements will be set to 1

If you submit a result, but then (while playing phase is still open) find a way to improve it, you will be permitted to resubmit. Replay submissions should of course be done privately, to avoid giving other players ideas.

To avoid doubt (as this was asked a lot in the first contest) - there is no requirement to save at least one lemming on every level. You may "skip" levels if you wish (it just means you saved zero on that level).

Entry will remain open until midday UTC on March 26th. Once that passes, contestants will have until midday UTC on April 2nd to confirm their skillsets - to avoid doubt you do not need to wait for me to confirm "entries are now closed, send in your skillsets".

The playing phase will close at whichever comes first - (a) midday UTC on 24th April, or (b) when all entrants have submitted their replays and 72 hours have passed without any players re-submitting.

In any case where the version of NeoLemmix used makes a difference to the result, V12.11.2 will be considered the "authoritative" version for this contest. The correct versions of levels is attached, along with the styles the levels use. These have the lemming count set to 50, save requirement set to 1, skillset and talismans stripped, preplaced lemmings and skill pickups removed, all lemmings converted to normal lemmings, entrance and exit lemming limits removed, as well as the removal of any messages the levels had set up. You can use NL QuickMod (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5382.0) to quickly add your custom skillset to all levels.

You need to pick levels when entering for this one. You're free to come up with your own way to make some at-random picks if you like, though.

Will locked exits be unlocked, or will you need to press all the buttons?

No reason to alter these. Preplaced lemmings / lemming limits can directly mess with the contest setup; unlock buttons are just another element of completing the level.

Also, what about pickup skills?
Hm. These, on the other hand, could be a problem (keeping in mind the "verifying the results" side of things, too). My gut feeling is that they should simply be removed like preplaced lemmings are.

Any pack, as long as it exists as a new-formats release at the time this topic was created. That can also be contest entries, rather than "from a pack", if the contest was held in new-formats.

The reason I asked this question is because it was the deciding factor whether I would nominate a certain level or not. Now that this has been made clear, I have decided against nominating it. That said, I now have my nominations ready and I will be entering the contest.

ArtLems (Colorful Arty) - Ancient 2: The Crypt of Ramesses II
NeoLemmix Introduction Pack (IchoTolot) - Objects & Functions 17: Neutral Response

OK. I have now made a decision about what levels. I'm going to include one of my old NL levels in for this contest, along with two others from levelpacks that joined my pack in the backburner. :P

Playstation 3 Level Pack: Tricky 1: Keep an eye on Mr. Climber

The rest of them are...
Lemmings Plus Omega II (namida): Spiky 14: Hot Plate
Zemmings (zanzindorf): Kiwi Knight 8: The Great Bomber Escape!
Integral Lemmings (tan x dx): Epsilon 1: Unconventional Techniques

Entries are now closed. I'll put the list of entrants / nominated levels up on the first post later today, in the meantime, feel free to start picking your skillsets (PM them to me).

Note that the criteria required when choosing your skillset is much more flexible than the first contest. It's still "8 total skills", but instead of having a rough outline with only a little bit of flexibility, you have near-total choice over which skills this time. The only restriction is that you may only have a maximum of four (but you may have less) of the skills on this list: Platformer, Builder, Stacker, Basher, Fencer, Miner, Digger.

Do you mean the first post of this topic? Just to clarify that you don't mean the Contest #1 topic, for some reason.

^ Yes, that is what I meant; and it's now added.

I notice - far too late - that not only did I ultimately overlook including a "custom levels only" criteria, there wasn't even any rule against duplicates from the first contest (which to be fair, would not have been a concern if the "custom levels only" was not overlooked) - so one level that was also in the first contest ended up sneaking in. Here's hoping the RNG takes care of that.

One thing that I will state though: Make sure you get your copies of levels for the contest (when it's time) from THIS topic. There will be no consideration given in a situation where someone's replay fails because they used the wrong version of a level.

I see two duplicates from the first contest, actually -- "Keep your hair on, Mr Lemming" and "Lemming Tomato Ketchup Facility".

The probability is 33/248 that neither one is selected.

If I can I'd like to enter to play, without nominating any levels.

Should I send my skill selection to namida now?

-----

question: must we keep track of how many skills we've used per level by ourselves? So like if I used 5 builders on the first levels, when I go to the next, I must just pretend 5 skills are gone for that level etc.?

question: must we keep track of how many skills we've used per level by ourselves? So like if I used 5 builders on the first levels, when I go to the next, I must just pretend 5 skills are gone for that level etc.?

It's entirely up to you how you do this. I found it useful to give every level infinity of each skill, and then use the records feature (in the F2 menu) to track how many skills I'd used each time. The only problem with this is that the records stop counting skills after the save requirement has been met, so you do have to keep that in mind.

I also had a spreadsheet open whilst I was playing, and I added the skills used to that spreadsheet so that I had something to cross-reference the scores with.

In the end, there was only 1 error in my results, and it was most likely due to me forgetting to add a skill to the spreadsheet in the same instance that it wasn't counted by NL's record-keeping feature.

I have also suggested that there be a way of tracking "skills used" in-level (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=5317.msg88868#msg88868), perhaps by hitting a hotkey to toggle the panel view to show what's been used rather than how many are remaining. I think that since this contest has taken off and become popular, this feature would now be more relevant than ever.

I'm going to have to cancel or at least postpone this, since I'm just not in the right mindspace to manage it lately.

If someone else wants to take over hosting this one, go ahead, otherwise I guess we'll put it on hold for now and could possibly revive it later.

If/when it does go ahead, any third or later one will not be open-choice. Dealing with multiple packs is too much hassle.

Okay, I will take over the hosting of this contest. Look after yourself namida. :)

Everyone who still wishes to take further part in this contest, please PM me the skillset you wish to use (do NOT post it publicly). You may choose up to 8 different skills, and you can pick no more than 4 from the following: Platformer, Builder, Stacker, Basher, Fencer, Miner and Digger. To be clear, nothing has changed from before.

If I receive skillsets from every participant by midday UTC on April 2nd, we will move ahead with the original schedule, otherwise I will extend the deadline of this phase to midday UTC on April 7th (one week from this post).

The levels that have been nominated are available in the attachments of this post. Feel free to have a look if you have yet to decide on the skillset you want to use. There are 32 levels here, and when the contest begins, it will be reduced to 20 levels, decided by randomization.

If you're having issues with the downloads, please let me know.

[NOTE] This is NOT the final level set. Please go to the first post of this topic (posted by namida) if you're after those.

Everybody has submitted their skillsets before April 2nd, so the contest will stick to the original deadline. Thank you for your quick responses everyone. :)

Tomorrow evening (I'm aiming for 18:00 UTC), I will be using a randomizer to determine the levels that will be played in the contest. I will be in the Brick Room on the Discord server as I do this so that you can watch it happen if you want to. After the levels have been determined, I will upload the authoritative level pack on here, and the contest will begin for real at that point.

The levels that will be used for this contest has been determined. They have been attached to the first post, and the music has been attached to this post.

The playing phase will close at midday UTC on 24th April, or if 72 hours have passed after everybody has submitted their results without anyone resubmitting an improved result.

For clarification:
- You have a maximum of 25 of each skill that you have picked to distribute across the entire 20-level pack.
- The release rates and time limits have not been adjusted for this contest.
- If you decide not to save any lemmings on some levels, this is perfectly acceptable. Feel free to only use your skills on the levels that you can get results from.
- If you are ready to submit your results, compile your replays into a zip file, then send me a PM with the zip file attached. Make sure there is only one replay per level you have solved, and do NOT tell me how many lemmings you have saved.
- You are allowed to resubmit your results if you have found an improvement. When the contest closes, the latest submission that you have sent me will be used, even if an earlier submission would've yielded better results.
- If you have picked the Cloner, and you haven't used all 25 of them, the ones you have not used will NOT be converted to lemmings saved.
- The person who has saved the most lemmings will win the contest. Any ties will be broken by fewest total skills used.
- NeoLemmix V12.11.2 is the authoritative version for this contest. Make sure you use this version when taking part.

This is likely something that should probably be decided on a case-by-case basis, but I would suggest disallowing repeat levels between contests in future if and only if the skillset rules follow the same pattern as these first two contests (i.e. 8 skills, 25 of each, limited choice)

Conversely, if and only if the skillset rules are significantly different each time, then repeat levels should be allowed.

There are two reasons I'm thinking along these lines:

a) If the skillset rules remain largely constant between contests*, then the levels should absolutely be the variable factor each time - this is to prevent the same solutions being used as in previous contests. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it does make for a less interesting contest, even if only by 1 level.

b) It also means that new players can potentially use the same solutions used by previous contestants; admittedly, this is if the skillsets happen to be similar enough to crossover on the skills used for that level and if the previous solutions are known to the new player - an unlikely set of circumstances, but worth considering. If we take it to the extreme and the levels are always the same each time, then the tendency will always be to choose the optimum skillset and solutions for that set of levels, and the results will naturally converge. Changing either levels or skillset rules significantly each time prevents this.

*For the record, I am strongly in favour of variations in the skillset rules each time. Since these first 2 contests have used a very similar set of rules, I can see this becoming a recurring theme, or at least a "go-to" in the absence of either better ideas, or the inclination to try out different ones.

There is one week left in this contest. I repeat, there is ONE WEEK remaining! Make sure you have submitted a replay set to me by the 24th of April 12:00 UTC, preferably earlier than that so that I can confirm in advance that your solutions don't exceed the skill use limit.

In the meantime, without revealing anyone's skillsets, here's some trivia about the skills everybody has chosen.
