Title: New NeoLemmix Website
Post by: Nessy on August 30, 2017, 02:53:55 PM
Hello Lemmings Forums community.

In light of recent events, namida has given me access and the responsibility of maintaining the NeoLemmix website at http://www.neolemmix.com/ (http://www.neolemmix.com/).

I have decided to open a thread here mostly for communication purposes, such as letting everybody know when an update has occurred on the website or in worst case scenario if a delay will occur. It will help in keeping everybody in the loop. I have also been given permission to stylize the website a little bit. I don't plan on going super fancy with it, but I would like to post any progress on that so that people will see how it looks so far and post feedback about things you may not want and/or do want. This feedback is more than welcome anytime. Any feedback on actual updates is also welcome.

If you have any questions and/or comments don't hesitate to post in this thread.

:)

Please remember: the one huge change that makes any website a more welcome place to hang around: don't have separate colours for visited and non-visited links! 8-)

I think this depends a lot on the context. Links to the forums indeed don't need another color. But for links to download the Toolkit, level packs and the like, it is useful, because one can check whether one has already downloaded the most recent version. Of course this only works, if the actual link is updated when a new version comes in and one doesn't just change the file behind it...

UPDATE

Changes made live

- Nepster's new Graphic Conversation Tool and NLEditor V0.9 have been uploaded to the NeoLemmix website (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=index). It has been put into a new link on the sidebar simply called "NLEditor (Test Version)".

Changes not made live yet

- Mostly front-end code cleanup and page layout. Some things I have accomplished so far:
     - Switching code to HTML5.
     - Remove inline styles and place them in external style sheet.
     - Remove all table tags (table layouts are no longer used as there are many style properties that accomplish the same thing while simplifying code).
     - Remove all <br> tags and &nbsp; and use margins and padding instead.
     - Enclose download lists in unordered list tags.
     - Wrote a small script that will mark whatever page you are on the side navigation.

In development

- Start some styling! Because functionality is the primary focus this may take more time than actual updates such as the one done today.

UPDATE

Changes made live

- There are now two download links on the NLEditor page at http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=nleditor (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=nleditor). One downloads the the latest NLEditor with the Graphic Conversation Tools, and the other one is just the latest NLEditor only.
- NLEditor V0.10 uploaded.

UPDATE

Changes made live

- Some style changes have finally been made to the NeoLemmix (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=index) website! They include:
     - Changing the font and increasing font sizes for better readability.
     - A nice navigation bar on the side.
     - That same navigation marks what page you are on by keeping the link of the page you are on highlighted with a subtle color. It uses a small JavaScript file (barely 8 lines) to see what page you are on and then finds the corresponding link instead of checking whether or not a click occurred on a link on the nav. That way, even if you visit a page via another link on another page, it will still work (it doesn’t work on very, very old browsers, but there shouldn’t be any problems there).

Please keep in mind that this is NOT the final product. This is just a small change and there will be many more to come involving colors, background, layout, etc. Hopefully, the current changes will be a nice first step.

If you have any feedback please feel free to post it here, and if you absolutely hate something feel free post about it too!

Slick! Love the large font and streamlined typesetting, makes good use of the space.

(The old font size was already OK and not too small, I had no issues.)

I had JS disabled by default, and whitelisted NL.com. The only setback during disabled JS was no white marker for current page. The naviagation bar still worked with JS disabled, very good. Firefox 55 on Archlinux.

Thanks Simon. I made sure that the navigation didn't relay on JS to work. If a person has JS enabled then the white mark is just an extra feature, but if they don't then they just don't get it and it doesn't punish them by taking functionality away. The website is not that large so not having the white mark to show you what page you are on is not going to ruin user experience.

UPDATE

- You can now download the full zip file containing the latest NLEditor and Graphic Conversation Tools, the latest NLEditor only, or the latest GraphicsTool only. That way people don't have to keep downloading the full zip file for every update that happens on individual programs only.

- Nepster's new GraphicsTool version is uploaded to the NeoLemmix (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=nleditor) website.

UPDATE

Version 0.4 of the GraphicsTool has been uploaded and is now downloadable from NeoLemmix.com (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=nleditor). The new version fixes some bugs IchoTolot found.

Thanks Colorful Arty. This isn't the final design, but I think it's a nice first step. I'm still playing around with ideas for what else to do with the website, but I am still sticking with my initial plan of not doing anything fancy. For a website like this fancy stuff is just going to sacrifice functionality.

Found a small typo on the Neo Lemmix website on the Lemmings Plus packs page.

You have put down LPIII as having 69 levels when it only has 65 levels.

Also not really a website issue but I've noticed namida's LP pack links in his topic are all linking to the old Neo Lemmix website links and the downloads links on the old site don't work.

I was wondering if there was a way to re-direct the links to the old site and make them go to the new site. Of course it would be easier if namida (or another moderator) could just modify the LP packs topic and modify the website links.

I've given Flopsy mod rights on the level pack boards to fix namida's links. Caring about this linkrot is excellent housekeeping. Thanks!

Thanks Flopsy for spotting that error. I'll go ahead and fix that.

I also want to let everybody know that there will be a delay in updating the website to have all the new applications Nepster published today due to personal reasons. It shouldn't be too long and I should have it ready today, but just wanted to let everyone know just in case. I will, of course, post again when I am certain everything has been updated correctly. Thank you.

Warning!

The NeoLemmix website will be unavailable for the next hour or two. You can still access it, but there will be broken links and such as I go through the process of updating everything and making sure everything works.

I will post when everything is up and running again.

The site is working again.

Everything Nepster published today has been uploaded and is now available to download at NeoLemmix.com (http://www.neolemmix.com/?page=index).

Some things to note:
- The NeoLemmix Player page has the updated NeoLemmix Player (V11.15.20)

- For a limited time the application that allows you to convert your level packs to the new format will be included when you download the NeoLemmix Player zip file. Nepster suggested to have these separated in the future when we are more settled with the new formats, so when that time comes I will let everyone know where its permanently home will be.

- Don't forget to download the Styles folder on the NeoLemmix Player page as well. They contain the updated graphic sets.

- The NeoLemmix Editor page has the new NLEditor (V1.0)

- The Graphic Tool and Graphic Conversation tools are now on the Graphic Set Tool page.

- And of course, old versions of every application are available to download by following the "download page" link.

- I am planning on doing some more style updates to the website. The first will be making the download links look more pretty, which is something I have been playing around with. Right now they look like they are a part of the main text and the only thing that visually separates them are the default hyperlink styles and unordered list bullet points. Except that change soon. I might test it on one page and get feedback.

If you have trouble downloading something or with the website in general please let me know right away on this thread or via PM.

8-)

I just want to let everybody know that I have uploaded Nepster's new NXPConverter. You can download it separately instead having to download the entire NeoLemmix player again. I'm in the process of trying to organize these download links a little better, so expect that soon.

Overall I like the new hompage very much, but I have four comments/suggestions:
1) I have the urge to click on the black "NeoLemmix" header on the left to get back to the main page. I think it should be clickable and go the main starting page. Perhaps we then don't need the additional "Home" link any more?
2) Currently the "About" section is at the bottom of the player download page. I think this is far too important to be placed there and would better fit on the main starting page.
3) I know this is due to the recent changes, but on the player download page the new-formats player is currently offered along with the Introduction pack V1.06, which can only be played in the old-formats player. Perhaps remove the Intro pack from this site for the moment or at least offer a warning about this incompatibility?
4) While I very much appreciate that you updated everything so quickly with their new-formats counterpart, I noticed that you still offer the old-formats Flexi Toolkit. Perhaps replace it, too, with its new-formats counterpart, which is now called "PackToolkit.exe"? Of course we don't yet have youtube tutorials for it, but I have high hopes that Flopsy will get around creating one at some point ;).

Thanks Nepster for the feedback.

1) If the black NeoLemmix header on the left returns you to the home page then, yes, I can remove the "Home" link. The only problem I have is if other people have the same urge to click it as you. I might make the change and if someone has trouble I will encourage them to let me know so that I can figure out another solution.
2) I thought that someone would like the download links first so they can quickly grab what they needed, but if the About section is more important then I can easily swap the two sections.
3) I think I'm going to remove it for now, at least until the Introduction pack is up to date with the new formats. I didn't want to mess with the existing content too much, but since you offered that choice then that's going to be my decision.
4) Good catch. Yes, I will replace it and I'm sure Flopsy wouldn't mind making a tutorial.

Good point. So perhaps let's keep the current layout and see whether other people feel the same.

Sorry for not being clear here: I don't want to just swap the two sections in the player download page, but move the "About" section to the main starting page, one gets to when entering http://www.neolemmix.com/.
The reasoning is the following: A new potential user starts there and the first question they have is most likely "Why should I use NeoLemmix?". And the About section on the player download page gives a pretty good overview of the new features and keeps the new user interested.

NeoLemmix Player V11.15.21 and NLEditor V1.1 have been uploaded to the NeoLemmix website.

Some other changes have also been uploaded that take into consideration Nepter's feedback:
- NeoLemmix "About" section has been moved to home page with a new header.
- NeoLemmix Introduction Pack has been removed.
- New Flexi Toolkit is available to download independently under the Flexi Toolkit page.

And of course please be advised that all feedback is welcomed 8-).

Hey Nessy! Why are the Genesis and DOS and other music packs not on the website anymore?

Unfortunately I never remembered about them so it never migrated to the new website (because when I took over not all content from the old website was available in the new website). I must do this. Thank you for bringing this up.

For now please download these tracks in the old NeoLemmix website (https://www.neolemmix.com/old/neolemmix.html).

A "Music Pack" page has been added to the NeoLemmix Website (https://www.neolemmix.com/). It contains all music packs found on the old NeoLemmix site plus a brand new one... the SNES music pack. Special thanks to GigaLem for finding those SNES tracks and Yung Gotenks for fixing and converting them.

I am also seriously considering including the 8-bit remixes (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=3492.msg68451) by Yung Gotenks in the website as well (with his permission of course), and maybe some other official lemming tracks. Any suggestions or links to other fan-made tracks I am not familiar with would be appreciated

P.S.: Have a save holiday and end of year everyone!

NL homepage (https://www.neolemmix.com/) is bloated. Cut 70 % of the text. People won't read it anyway. The more text there is, the less is read (both relatively and absolutely).

NL homepage (https://www.neolemmix.com/) needs a clearly visible button/link that downloads the installer. Ideally, the first link on the page does that. People don't read text. People scan page for promising links.

NL download page (https://www.neolemmix.com/?page=neolemmix) needs another link to the installer, along with the links that are already there. NL download page should still peddle the installer more than anything.

NL homepage's download button will not start any download. Download button will still generate a dashed outline when I left-click the download button. Arch Linux, Firefox 59.0.2, both for scripts enabled and disabled.

NL homepage needs an about text that is 1-2 sentences at most. Focus on the essentials, play and design custom levels. With familiar stuff! And -- optionally -- platformers, fencers, teleporters, and other exciting features. (Psychology. Even though people don't admit that they want always the same, pepole really want always the same, and only much later will try anything new at all and then praise the new.)
