Title: Your favorite Lemmings song(s)?
Post by: Yung Gotenks on August 05, 2017, 03:19:02 AM
I checked and a thread about this was made a year ago, but i thought it was ok to still post a thread even if it's obsolete (don't know if that breaks a rule) but your favorite tracks might change overtime.

Anyways, this track is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE track.

(Amiga version of Smile if you love Lemmings)

I also like these ones too.

I'm a fan of the SNES soundtrack; that's the one I grew up with. The other versions of the original songs sound kinda strange to me.

These Amiga tracks and SNES soundtrack are great. Believe it or not, I actually like the Genesis soundtrack even though that wasn't the one I grew up with, and my favorite from that soundtrack is its version of London Bridge Is Falling Down. However, I pretty much enjoy Can-Can on any version ;).

Track 13 of the Master System version. It's a track unique to that version.

the so called "Raindbowbridge" song was always one of my favorites.

also the one from ONML:

Then I really like almost all of the Commodore 64 songs;

Maybe it's just because I grew up with it, but I ADORE the DOS soundtrack, particularly the tracks Twang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T787stmduDs), Infernal Galop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi-koI7mvq0), Patience (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdjIemhy8Iw) and most of all Rondo Alla Turca (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_Bf59JHb3w).

That said, I also love the SNES versions of Dance of the Little Swans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1ZkoseBkug&index=5&list=PL8149DFEC20185E72), Rondo Alla Turca (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9N6YfZ7wUxw&list=PL8149DFEC20185E72&index=11), and Lemming 3 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-ub6D1QR-k&list=PL8149DFEC20185E72&index=10). Genesis Lemming 2 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOZnFXk3gzQ) is also amazing, as are tracks 13 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8-DSQI7iOM&list=PL3ADEFF9336CC2B12&index=13), 14 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCnHyQgBvDE&index=14&list=PL3ADEFF9336CC2B12), and 15 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOlUAfxy2QY&index=15&list=PL3ADEFF9336CC2B12) from the Master System.

Like many of the above posters, I love the soundtrack of the version I grew up with, in my case the Mac:

Mac - Oh No! More Lemmings - Track 4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOmGk0ooJFo&t=354)
Mac - Track 13 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_8Y3yOjKxQ&t=1676)
Mac - What an AWESOME level (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_8Y3yOjKxQ&t=2756)

I forgot to mention "paitence" song (tim6?) is also one of my favorites. I like many of the versions too, all have different things that make them interesting.

Twang used to be my favourite, but nowadays there are some other tracks I really like as well. It'd be hard to choose.
As for versions: I really like both the Amiga version and the PC-Adlib/DOS version. The Amiga version doesn't seem to loop well, though, judging from VengefulChip's video.
I think the Atari ST version unfortunately isn't as great as it could be. :/

Well, this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jmlbEbTiQQ) is definitely the WORST Lemmings track out there.

This one is also kinda bad. (https://youtu.be/Y_QO8IKuaY4?t=37s) It's a complete change from the usual upbeat music in official Lemmings.

By the way, has anyone ever played the NES port of Lemmings? The controls and physics did get annoying, but it had a nice soundtrack in my personal opinion. These were my favorites:

Smile If You Love Lemmings (https://youtu.be/H8TbCzhZds0?t=1m22s)
London Bridge Is Falling Down (https://youtu.be/H8TbCzhZds0?t=10m12s)
Forest Green (https://youtu.be/H8TbCzhZds0?t=11m46s)

The music is identical in the Game Boy version if that counts (has the same levels as the NES version).

I like the London Bridge is Falling Down track :)

Yeah, the levels were the same but I wasn't sure if the music was as well. Despite everything, those levels were pretty unique. I remember the levels either having a different name (for example It's Hero Time was Who Wants To Be A Hero?, Just A Minute was Houston We Got A Problem, and The Far Side was Calling International Rescue to name a few), the same layout but a different solution (Feel The Heat had a neat little puzzle to it that only works on Game Boy and NES ports), a repeat of a level that never had one (Watch Out! There's Traps About! and even Tailor Made For Blockers), or a completely new level (Hello John Got A New Lemming).

I like the London Bridge is Falling Down track :)

I love this track and Can-Can on pretty much every port, but my absolute favorite is London Bridge Is Falling Down on Genesis. I didn't include a link to it in my first post. My bad. Here it is (https://youtu.be/LtuavwMuVks).

Well, this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jmlbEbTiQQ) is definitely the WORST Lemmings track out there.

Keep in mind the sound hardware of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum was apparently somewhat primitive.  For reference, here's a youtube link to a "Best of ZX Spectrum Music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZvYtSmkJMc&list=PLvf41E1k8S56o9VrhsFCAmVrRl-tDULJZ)" playlist.  I'll admit that most entries on that playlist do sound at least a little better than that Lemmings track.  Perhaps the person who did the Lemmings tracks was not an expert with the Spectrum ZX sound hardware, and didn't know what to do and what not to do on that hardware to get the best sounds out of it.

This one is also kinda bad. (https://youtu.be/Y_QO8IKuaY4?t=37s) It's a complete change from the usual upbeat music in official Lemmings.

I didn't realize the Gameboy Color version had such totally different music, I always assumed it had same music as the regular Gameboy version.  While the first track of the first level of the game arguably doesn't make the best first impression, it does seem to get more upbeat with subsequent tracks (2 (https://youtu.be/Y_QO8IKuaY4?t=88) 3 (https://youtu.be/Y_QO8IKuaY4?t=144)).

I'm still surprised they even bother to create seemingly all(?) original tracks for that version.  What's wrong with just transcribing the music from the regular versions? ??? :-\ The few I heard from that version didn't exactly impress.

[edit: having listened to those 3 tracks on GBC, I wonder if there is some sort of hardware limitation at play as well?  I noticed those tracks don't seem to have independent "voices" of music--it seems like every time a note is started or stopped, it does so across all voices, so it doesn't seem like you can, for example, sustain one lower bass note while playing a sequence of several higher melodic notes over it.

But if that's the case I think that's more restrictive than even the regular GameBoy?  I don't know the respective hardware capabilities that well but find it hard to believe Gameboy Color would be more primitive and restrictive on its sound capabilities than the older, non-color Gameboy.]

Yes. It may not be the best soundtrack ever in my opinion, but it does get a lot better. I actually like the second one a lot. As for why didn't they use the original tracks... I don't think it was hardware limitations because even the old Gameboy somewhat replicated some of the original tracks. Then again, I could be wrong.

I managed to track down the full set of soundtracks for Lemmings GBC on youtube:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lySsBKMzLxY  The video notes lists the times in video for each track (note: not in same order as in the game).

Overall, the music honestly sounds like it was arranged for one of the more primitive sound hardware from way before even the time of GB regular, like for example the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Colorful Arty linked to (except I feel like even that version still did a better job).  Perhaps the company that did this port (which I'm fairly sure was a different company from the one that did the NES and GB ports) had only dealt with consoles with more primitive sound hardware before doing the Lemmings port?  I almost wonder if they just reused music from some other game that they already made/ported.

I checked Wikipedia and it confirms that GBC is backwards compatible with regular GB games, so it stands to reason that it should be capable of at least the same music you'd hear on the regular GB version.  The blame thus lies solely on the company that did the porting for the GBC version.

I have in fact played every level on both the NES and Gameboy (regular) ports (through emulators), though to be honest I don't remember much about their music.  They were more or less what I had expected, the same familiar music from versions like DOS, arranged to work with the limitations of sound hardware on those consoles.  I guess there's a charm to it if you are into these kinds of old-school "chiptune" kind of sound.

Comparing with the Gameboy (regular) version on youtube for a few different tracks, I think I actually like the Gameboy version better than the NES version, though I can't rule out possible variations in recording quality being a possible biasing factor in the different youtube videos I listened to.

My favourite has always been and still is the Mega Drive version of ''Enjoy The Show'' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRdGLxm-RKY&t=20s It was the only track in the entire soundtrack to use a mandolin.

That link you posted Nessy (this one is also kinda bad) sounds like a very bad version of (Titus the fox). Yeah that does sound bad that one.

For me I would have to go for the atari st one as that was the one I grew up with. My favorite one would have to be

on that first GBC youtube link posted; you see for a split second an image of some brick level appears.
Not clear if this is a glitch in the game itself or was the product of the video. The game apparently features both L1 and ONML but this level doesn't look familiar to me at all.
