Title: Lego tileset 1.3 available for download
Post by: Colorful Arty on July 12, 2016, 11:50:42 PM
I am currently making a Lego tileset for NeoLemmix, and I want some input on what to add. I am definitely  making blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple, white, black, dark grey, and light grey pieces for the final product and I want to know, should I add more colors? If so, what colors? Adding more pieces for each color will be easy via updates, but adding new colors could be problematic due to the arrangement of the pieces in the editor.

Also, if anyone has any specific pieces or ideas for what the exit should look like, please let me know. In the case of the former, a photo would be helpful.

Here is what it looks like right now.

In regards to the adding further pieces, I don't know how closely you've been following the development of the experimental version with the new file formats, but for a while now it's used names instead of numeric indexes for pieces. So, even if the list does end up a bit cluttered, it'll only be temporarily until we move to the new version (I still can't put a timeframe on when this will happen, sorry; but we're getting closer - graphic sets and replays are now 100% new-format-based :D). As such, I wouldn't consider it a huge issue at this stage.

Overall, this graphic set looks very nice! :) However - is the gray part above the lemming meant to be an entrance? It doesn't particularly stand out as such, at least in a screenshot.

How bout designing a Lego Exit?

The grey piece is the trapdoor that the lemmings pop out of, and yes I do intend to make a lego exit. The rock one is just a placeholder for now.

Do you have an idea on how to make the trapdoor stand out more?

As a general rule, go for something with a similar shape (and perhaps animation, even) as the standard trapdoors. You can't go wrong with that. Perhaps make the top part out of lego. (possibly a similar style to the Xmas trapdoor - some lego construction on the top, and a normal window on the bottom?)

You can make the trapdoor also look like the one in the Lix Marble set. I'm not sure if you've downloaded Lix yet, but if you have then you should be able to see the animation of that trapdoor. Or, you can see it in GigaLem's Phantasmal 6 "This is the Wrong Engine" in Resident GigaLems 0. The trapdoor there seems to have that Lego-y feel to it.

I was thinking, add some studs to the the door, and the bottom of lego pieces to be on the other side of the door

I have a (tentative) exit and entrance made for the tileset. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to make an animated .gif of them without MASSIVELY dropping the picture quality, so these are the best I can do.

it'd probably be a good idea to make the entrance/exit a colour not featured in the terrain like white or pink or orange or something to make it stand out more, looks like a nice graphics set though ^_^

The first version of the Lego tileset is now available for download! It contains 10 colors of legos (blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple, white, light grey, dark grey, and black) and all of the basic pieces needed to build just about anything (close to 200 terrain pieces). It also has the typical entrance/exit, pre-placed lemming, pickup skill, and water, and it also has a locked exit with buttons, fire traps, and a custom background as an object to distinguish the black pieces better against the background. The objects tend to be light blue in color so as to distinguish them from actual terrain. The only problem thus far is the lack of steel. I'm still trying to find a way to make terrain that is obviously steel while still keeping with the lego theme. Ideas on how to implement this are appreciated, as well as suggestions for future bricks to put in.

This terrain pack will be updated in the future (simply adding new pieces and object, and not deleting or rearranging them). The next update will have more pieces, teleporters/receivers, updrafts, and some sort of Lego spear trap. Let me know what you think! :D

Thanks for doing the Lego tileset. I haven't looked through it thoroughly, but from first glance it looks good!

For the steel Lego pieces, perhaps you could color them in a very similar scheme to the Metal (http://www.neolemmix.com/old/levelimg/nli/0315.png) tileset? (note that the metal pieces with the gray border around them are the steel pieces).

The problem is, ALL of the pieces have a border around them to show you how many pieces there are. Right now, my best ideas are legos facing toward you the player (since they have the dot pattern steel is known for having) or making them look metallic in coloring (like silver or gold legos).

A third idea I just came up with is to take the border away and replace it with a cross. This should easily disguise a steel from a non-steel piece, especially if you put them on the dark-grey blocks.

That's exactly what I meant.

1.1 so soon? Indeed. I added 10 steel blocks. Steel in this tileset are simply silver bricks which look suspiciously like the pieces in the metal tileset. :-[

Thanks Minim for the cross suggestion, but I really like the look of the silver bricks instead.

OK. Taking a first glance at the set itself, let alone its update, I see some good points and some bits that are questionable.

Starting with the good points:
* Lots of terrain pieces and lots of different colours.
* I like the blend of two shades of grey as a steel piece. Good job on that.
* Innovative use of lego for water and unlock buttons.

Now the questionable stuff:
* While you have lots of pieces, I'd rather sort the pieces out by groups of shapes of the same colour, rather than the other way round, just like what you've done with the steel pieces.
* I can't see any curved steel pieces  unlike the rest of the terrain.pieces. It would look quite nice if you could add some of those in.
* I know there's a large navy blue block for a reason: To disguise the black pieces more easily. However, I found out that the length of that object clutters the pick object menu. Maybe half or quarter it? (It's only a small suggestion, and this may be something I should contact namida for: Reducing the size of large objects in a menu to make sure both the picture and the info is readable on one menu)

I HAVE to group by shape since I will be adding new shapes and pieces, but no new colors. Thus, either I can group by shape, or have no discernible grouping whatsoever. I can't constantly change the order of the pieces with each update, or else previous levels in this set will not run.

I will probably add more steel pieces in the next update, but I put in the basics for this one.

The background is 320x160 pixels, which is the standard level size default. If this seems to be a big deal (no pun intended), I may shrink it in future updates.

I don't know if that will stand out enough... it would probably help to have some screenshots of potential designs in levels, rather than just the piece itself.

Unlock button / Locked exit suggestion: change the color of the gray unlock button or the gray lights on the top of the locked exit. Since the grey lights and the unlock buttons are the same color, people will also think that the gray lights on the top of the exit are unlock buttons. This in turn can cause a lot of confusion.

Perhaps the gray lights on the top of the locked exit should be of a darker gray instead.

Steel block suggestion: since mixing graphic sets is now possible, is it possible if you could change the design of the steel blocks a bit? When mixing the steel Lego pieces with those in the Metal graphic set, this can also cause major confusion. Perhaps implement Minim's cross suggestion into the steel blocks (but make the cross of a dark gray color)?

Good suggestions. I'll see what I can do. What would people think of the steel either:

1. Being black and yellow striped like a caution sign
2. Being silver in color, but having the traditional steel bolts in the corners

If you prefer one over the other, let me know either by replying or via PM.

It's worth keeping in mind that some responsibility for visual clarity falls on the level designer too, especially when mixing graphic sets together. The most important thing for a graphic set designer is to make sure that the pieces stick out within the graphic set, not nessecerially when compared to others.

steel either:
1. Being black and yellow striped like a caution sign
2. Being silver in color, but having the traditional steel bolts in the corners

Bolts around the edge are good, they make me interpret things as steel. Bolts in the 4 corners suffice in a pinch.

The coloring is secondary for me. It's good whenever earth and steel have different color schemes. If the only options are (1) or (2), then I choose (2) purely because of the bolts.

I also like option 2; having bolts in the corners is a good-enough indicator of steel. If you'd like, you could even make it so the bolts are all around the edges (e.g. the bolts of steel pieces in the Martian (http://www.neolemmix.com/old/levelimg/lpiii/0213.png) tileset).

You have two different versions of the tileset available in this topic, which has lead to issues for at least one user. I strongly recommend attaching (or linking to) the tileset in the original post too, not only to avoid this, but to make it easier to find for people who want to download it.

Version 1.0 in this post: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2813.msg59513#msg59513

Version 1.2 is here! It includes:

the background object replaced with a single transparent pixel, since it is redundant with the new background support. This way, it won't affect any previously made levels.

4 new pieces of terrain in all 10 colors! These include an arch, a small arch, an "eye" piece, and a rounded ledge piece which give you more options for structures.

The steel now differentiates itself from the Metal tileset pieces by including the screws in the corners and sides.

2 new traps! One for the walls, and one for the floor/ceiling! They are technically the same trap, but they use two different objects due to the rotation messing up the trigger area.

Enjoy, and if you have suggestions for future pieces/objects, please post them here! I would love to hear some input! I have planned on putting in teleporters/receivers for the next update as well.

EDIT: Put the attachment on the first post to make it more convenient for people.

Might want to check this hasn't messed up the Lego level I sent you for your stream tomorrow

Although it shouldn't if you haven't changed the terrain/object index numbers of anything in v1.1

Version 1.3 is out!

Changes:
FINALLY changed the color of the unlock button from dark grey to dark red (distinguishes from the buttons on the exits)
Added teleporter/receiver (extremely fast - all lemmings enter even at 99 RR)
