Anyway, post anything pointless here!

I'll start, by saying that I am now collecting photos and artwork of Streetlights... e-mail me if you have any!

[Andi: If you never knew, or don't remember, the reason for a Pointless Information thread is so that people have somewhere to post pointless stuff, and there aren't a million topics about it - plus, pointless stuff is fun to post, so it's annoying if you can't post it anywhere.]

I've taken back the new RAM chip after finding out that the motherboard can only take up to 384 MB of RAM. So I replaced it with a 128 MB chip, which, when added to the original 256 MB, brings it up to its capacity. Now it will run practicaly anything.

Today I went up into my attic out of lack of anything better to do (well, to tidy up, but I didn't have anything else to do anyway) and decided to have a rummage about. I discovered that I have quite a lot of stuff, ranging from the useful to the complete and utter pointless. I found *deep breath* six or so network cards, two sound cards, a 3DFX graphcs card, three hard drives, a 52x CD drive, a 100Mb ZIP drive, a Pentium II processor, an Epson dot-matrix printer, an Apple Mac without a monitor, an Apricot computer, countless keyboards and mice, three old PCs (one running OS/2), a BBC Master Micro with a secondary processor, mouse and graphics tablet, a Sinclair Spectrum ZX81, an ancient joystick, a stick of RAM (probably 32Mb), way too many different kinds of cables, and a network hub with the names Morag and Carol on it (WTF?)

All of those were more or less overshadowed by the discovery of my old Megadrive, though, which I lovingly photographed. Then shoved back in its box again.

When I was 13 I woke up one night and found jam smeared on my inside leg. I can only conclude that either I had a dream that I played out in real life, but couldn't remember when I woke, like I sleepwalked, or I was molested in my sleep by a beautiful young princess who climbed in through my bedroom window. I'd like to believe the latter since I had never sleepwalked before, and I've never sleepwalked since. :???:

INITIATING NORMALNESS.

Yeah, so back to normal. In tzar, I was playing a really fun map, which was great for campaign style play (playing on a random map, but like in campaign style. It's really fun). The balance of power was luckily enough for me not screwed over. Anyhow, I won the game after about 10 hours total. I've got the game documented in seven save files. Why? Well, it was one of the hardest and one of the best games I've ever played before, that's why. I had to use a lot of skill to rise up from a tiny group of villagers sailing away in a ship across the vast sea to a tiny refuge, sailing away from their old village which was filled with invaders and being turned to rubble. Not long after I abandoned my colonization campaign in a neighbor's land mass, the enemy took the offensive to my peninsula. I had nowhere near the strength to repel them. My southern front was occupied by he orange, who were coming from the main part of the continent. I could only run to a tiny island, in a little ship, clear across the map. It had one mine (this is not much) and some wood. From here, I managed to raise a town, and eventaully was able to patrol my shores. As soon as I saw the need for new resources, I decided to land on the mainland little ways south of me. Huge wars were being waged there. I had been involved in none of them for a long time. This was the beginning of the turn around. I defeated purple and converted several of their buildings. I defeated them I know not how, but i suspect it was because they were facing another enemy at the same time, yellow. Yellow was the most powerful nation on the map. I ran into them immediately after occupying the purple. I rushed to gather the much needed supplies. I managed to hold the northern conitinent. I researched their techs (they were a different civ(purple)) and trained an elite group of longbowmen. I used them and several, several offensives (I must have used over 2000 soldiers alone to defeat yellow) to finally push south and defeat my adversary. I had become a major world power with this victory. I converted their buildigns too. Green had been killed by orange and yellow. So, that left orange, which was on the other side of the continent, near my original base. A sea mostly separated the left side of the continent from the right side, but there was a small pass to the south. I fortified this after driving back, very slowly, with a group of dragons, a huge, massive line of orange troops that would come constantly. I finally made preparations to attack orange. It was a success. By now, my army no longer consisted of mostly men. The vast majority was made of stone golems and dragons. I ripped the city to pieces. Then, there was one player left. Red. How ironic, that the player who destroyed me in the beginning, would be destroyed by me in the end. I sailed in, and, I'll admit, it was hard to gain ground. But, it had been hard to the whole game. Eventually, I took the area I originally wanted to colonize, and then I took the other half of the island.

After all the people in the people in the batting team have had a go, the teams switch. The team with the most rounders by the end of the game, as always, wins.

I have a wonderful rounders-tinged memory of my year six days (the best school years of my life). We were playing it in the school field as part of PE, when I thwacked the ball right over the perimeter fence. Instead of getting a new ball, our drama-obsessed teacher had us play [virtual rounders\, which was the same as rounders but without a ball, bat, or any sense of fun.

I've been learning how to use corel draw (9) recently. You can make some neat stuff with it.

Oh and also my mom and my step dad made the basement a complete reck, making it harder for my brother and I to get to our computers, and my brother has a bad video card and mom won't buy a new one. Any PC we hook up to the internet becomes a pile of useless sludge. I wonder why idiots had to screw the internet up so bad. Oh well.

Now might be a good time to say this. When you are playing a level, the objects do not show properly. They half-dissappear when you move the cursor. It's very hard to describe. The best thing to do would be to show you a screenshot (http://www.geocities.com/piainp/snes_lemmings_rom_bug). It could just be my emulator, because I haven't updated it for years. ;)

I wish you'd have given me that advice five years ago, when we were given our language choices at school. Even though I was good at French, I chose German because "they're a more powerful country". What an idiot I was! I got a 'G' in my GCSE, and I deserved every letter of that grade for basing such a decision on a daft notion.

A short distance northeast of Atlanta, some schools did close because the ice had accumulated on the roads and on power lines, knocking out electricity.

I'm kind of glad we didn't get a major ice storm. I spent Wednesday night studying for an exam, and I didn't want it to get postponed, or I would have had to study for it again.

Chi tricks? I'm skeptical of their authenticity but you always have to wonder about these things because so many people belive it and have stories to go with... Seems poossible in some ways though, some of it. If you sent tons of messages to your nose, then your nerves would send electrical charges in your nose maybe causing sparks. It might be possible to make a spark on your nose but i really doubt that you could push someone over with electricity even with some wires and machines and stuff. A friend of mine can make an unplugged speaker make some noise by tapping the end of the plug as he told me. If you can make a blip of noise by touching a speaker plug i see how sparks on someones nose could be possible but i still dont believe that you could push someone over. :-/.

New years just wasn't a big event at my house. It seemed like no one cared actually... :P :-?

I guess the two can be hard to tell apart sometimes.

In my personal experience, I think it's an allergy when you sneeze a lot without actually having a runny (dripping even when you're not sneezing) nose, and you sneeze because your nose keeps feeling "itchy" inside.

I do the same but I never end up getting caught. I usually prefer to work on the computers when in college. I end up going on such cool sites like www.stickdeath.com and www.stickpage.com as I love stickmen games.

It warms my heart to see people grieving their grandparents because I was never close to mine. When they died, I wasn't affected at all. I feel I've missed out on something, especially when I see the relationship that my nephews and nieces have with my parents.

Unfortunately the backprogation does involve calculus if I recall, at least in its theoretical foundation. &#A0;I'll have to look it up on the web again to refresh myself on the details.

This is kinda ambitious for you, wouldn't you say? &#A0;You said you don't even know calculus that well. &#A0;And even if you do, there's still the separate field of knowledge on how to program the computer to numerically calculate with the equations involved. &#A0;Which is why I'm really curious what the ultimate goal and purpose is of this.

[edit: try http://cortex.snowseed.com/neural_networks.htm, it includes some code which I think you might be able to translate pretty easily to QBasic]

Interesting. What's the input to the neural network in that case? The raw pixels? Or some other representation?

I'd also suggest going to the library (esp if you're in a university/college) and check out books on this topic. If you library has textbooks, you should be able to find information on this on most introductory textbooks on AI (artificial intelligence) or machine learning.

From what I remember (with my memory refreshed by the websites, the calculus is mostly to derive the backpropagation algorithm. The actual algorithm does not actually involves any calculus-related computations.

Due to a spike in activity, there was the largest group of people on the channel since early last year, apparently. We all baked a huge IRCookie to commemorate it. Unfortunately, not everyone helped out very well. A guy called WAFFALU kept yelling random things and blowing stuff up and Khatoblepas(you may know him) was, unfortunately, hooked on chewing the furniture. It was all I and my angelcat could do to get him to chew the IRCookie instead. Fun.
