Title: General Comings and Goings
Post by: GuyPerfect on June 15, 2009, 03:50:14 AM
Coming out here to Washington, I brought with me a little Novatell Wireless USB internet dongle thing that I use through the Verizon network. It's very handy, as it's portable broadband that doesn't cost too much a month and I don't have to be near a wireless access point or what have you in order to use it.

But today... it was wonky! Turns out it was actually because of that little 3-inch USB extension cord that's useful for A) connecting USB flash drives that are shaped so obnoxiously you can't fit them into the spot where the USB port is and B) keeping delicate devices that normally just stick out of the computer from getting accidentally knocked and damaged. I used one such cord for purpose B, and the cord is going bad due to constant flailing every time I move my laptop around.

The short-lived anti-internet scare led me to realize something, though. How long have I been using the internet? Years. Several years. How many days have I gone without internet, on purpose? I'd say the number is probably less than 25, at least from the point when the internet became commonplace and not just that special time you take out of your day to dial up for a half hour. But yeah, internet's like a blood filter these days! An extension of the psyche!

I realized that whenever I'm not working or sleeping, I tend to be right here in front of the screen, clicking various links or checking to see if any new posts have been made or any new articles have gone up. There's so much I could be doing, but I'm not doing it! Well, since I have no particular obligations online, I have decided to do the unthinkable: I will go for a week with no internet! On purpose!

Fret not: this is not merely a whim; I've been considering such a fast for a while. But I figured now was a good opportunity to do so, so I will. At 0:00 Eastern tonight (which is when the calendar flips over to June 15), I'll be offline for a week. If I need emergency directions or if I need to place an order for something, I may use the internet for those purposes, but otherwise... nothing. And I have no reason to believe that I'll use the internet at all for the next week.

Instead, I'll have to find other things to do with my time. Pull out old video games? Work on something? Go outside and... socialize!? Such unfathomable opportunities will be presented to me. Well, guess I have an hour left. Leave your comments here in the mean time!

*Waits for the obligatory "See you tomorrow!" post*

Did you ever succeed at doing that?
Title: Re: The Fast
Post by: Clam on August 06, 2009, 10:41:09 PM
Y'know, ever since this idea came up, I've been considering doing something like it sometime.

That time is now.

Unlike our esteemed colleague who originated this concept (well, he probably stole it from somewhere else, but anyway) I can't just cut myself off from the internet since I need it for my course work. So instead I'll do the next best thing: I'll give up Lemmings. This afternoon, I'm going to remove every trace of this accursed game from my sight and hide it all in a dark cupboard (or electronic equivalent).

Why am I doing this? Well, I need to. For my own sake. I've been spending my afternoons frantically checking these forums for updates, and trawling through the levels looking for something to add to the wave of challenge threads that has swept through this place. My enthusiasm for challenges is gone, my level designing side has fallen away, and whatever good intentions I've had - like (*gasp*) doing something other than Lemmings - just haven't been followed through. The quality of my posts on this forum is slipping, and worse, thinking about this game has kept me awake at nights. It's clear to me that I need a "Lemming holiday".

I'm going to stick around for the rest of today, but after that I'll be gone until next Saturday. (That's New Zealand time - for most of you it will still be Friday). When I get back, I'm going to try to be a more rounded Lemmings fan - and that means going back to work on my own levels instead of just tearing through challenge threads. And maybe, just maybe, I'll learn to enjoy this game in moderation.

Wish me luck :XD:

Regardless, good luck with your lemmings vacation!

Thanks. :)

Only a couple of hours of today left, then I'm outta here. I'm sure you'll barely even notice my absence.

By the way, has anyone seen GuyPerfect's blog lately? I just noticed he's been offline for some time, and this might go some way towards explaining it.

Good to see you Clam Spammer, although I haven't seen you on Friday (I live in the UK so the time is slightly ahead in Britain than in America). I think you were posting during my sleep.

Anyway, just to let you know I've got my first day of school today and I think the 2009-2010 season (My last year at school) will be the most hectic. I may carry on posting in the lemmings forums, but this could be my "breaking point" and I'll be off site between 7:45am and 3:35pm* BST (Those are my working hours) as well as my night time hours (Look at the stats). I'll also be trying to hide all my lemmings games, because sometimes I get a little too distracted by this thing while I concentrate on my schoolwork. I won't do any more lemmings challenges until the weekend, but just bear in mind that I'll be back at school for about 7 more weeks until my next half term holiday.

*EDIT: I am permitted to come home an hour earlier on Wednesdays an Thursdays.

I'm going back to school next week too... big school, that is (i.e. university). I'll keep posting here, but I'm afraid you won't see much progress on my custom levels. :(

As for the rest of you... good luck. ;)

Not sure why I decided to type in "lemmingsforums.com" again, but I did and here there are recent posts in a thread I made a while back!

The aforementioned fast only lasted the week in question. I was looking at the files for my blog just today and noticed that the announcement for the fast was the last thing I posted. That was before putting that big medallion-like thing on the front page.

While I'm not currently fasting, per se, I've all but withdrawn myself from the internet save for playing City of Heroes. As much as I try to prevent it, I keep having a life and it keeps interfering with my electronic endeavors... In this case, at the end of July I reeeeeeally was considering if I wanted to quit my job and move some three hours away and start all over again... and then the next day I found out I'd have to move out of my apartment. Problem solved!

The next two weeks were spent in a hotel working through the end of the pay period, and the past three weeks have essentially been spent in the back of the van keeping all my stuff company and spending my weekends in a hotel since two days a week is considerably cheaper than seven days a week. Though it's only Thursday today, I'm spending tonight in the hotel and hopefully for the last time... which is good, 'cause I'm almost out of money.

We'll see how things go, but you have my word I haven't played any Lemmings since the time I created this thread. (-:

I still have a desire to do a Lemmings fangame someday, but it's on my slowly growing list of fangames to do someday along with the likes of Tetrisphere, Uniracers, and even that Metroid project that signified my disappearance from these forums. It wasn't until thoroughly enjoying Metroid Prime: Trilogy that I decided to sort of come out of retirement, and today I dug out my main compy from its pile in the van and got my project's program code out so I could work on it again.

Buuuuut, like I said, we'll see. There are more uncertainties going forward than there were when I got here, 'cause after all... if you know you're going to be homeless, you can plan accordingly. But now I don't know! I wish I could expand on the situation, but that would venture into turning this post into an article or beyond, so I should probably cut it down to that.

Anyways, the fasting thing was my own idea. I'm not the only one who ever came up with it, but I didn't steal it from anyone. (-:

Hang on; Dullstar is already planning to do a fangame called "Epic Lemmings". I wouldn't like you to do a different one all by yourself (Unless you're really good with the technical aspect). Why don't you help out with us members?

take a 1 week fast from school?  Oh well, at least it's a three day weekend.

I hope you come back GuyPerfect...  and I'd like to see GuyPerfect do a fangame...  besides, by time he's done, the Epic Lemmings fangame will probably be finished because we're making custom levels for it, I seem to recall GuyPerfect wanting to reprogram things.
Title: Re: The Fast
Post by: Clam on September 05, 2009, 10:02:55 PM
I'd still very much like to see a reprogrammed version of Lemmings - if only to get rid of steel glitches. Those are a nightmare from a level design perspective  :XD:

Then again, Lemmings 2 has properly indestructible steel...
Title: Re: The Fast
Post by: Pooty on September 05, 2009, 11:35:25 PM
I think Lemmings 2 uses a tile-based system. All Lemmings games i've played so far that uses such a system, including the Master System version of the original, has flawless steel. That said, I can't really see why the original Lemmings game has that strange steel behaviour to begin with.
Title: Re: The Fast
Post by: Dullstar on September 05, 2009, 11:47:20 PM
Have you ever made a custom level with steel?  You have to use the steel areas!
Title: Re: The Fast
Post by: Clam on September 06, 2009, 12:23:28 AM
I think the steel glitches arise because each 4x4 section of the map can only have one type of field active (steel, trigger, blocker) at one time. It just so happens that steel has the lowest priority. Which makes sense, in a way - otherwise your blocker would do nothing if you placed it on steel.

The problem is really that steel terrain and steel objects are separate entities in DOS Lemmings. Putting them together goes a long way towards fixing it, although it's not foolproof - steel glitches exist in Lemmings 3 as well.

I'm not talking about custom levels, I'm referring to how steel works in the game. ;) But to answer your question, I do use steel areas. I have to place them carefully to avoid backroutes where possible (but i'm not a pro at this by any stretch of the imagination).

Ahh, I see. I did often wonder how the game works with such hefty technical limitations. Do you know if the Amiga version works in the same way?

Lemmings 3 has steel glitches? Now that is suprising. That game, including the skills, is pretty much entirely tile-based, if my memory serves me.

Hey folks!

This one is just a checkup, I'm on the road to recovery, but I'm having checkups every so often to make sure I'm still recovering well. If anything is wrong, all that will happen is that I'll get refilled with blood - that takes about 24 hours at the most, then I'm home again!

Adam :)

Thanks, I'm going on a 7-day cruise to Alaska.

...and here I am again, the 7 days flew by rather too quickly. ;) Anyway, it was fun and I probably gained a few pounds as well. ;)  And yes, I did get seasick once--it was on the way back from Alaska during an evening, I think the ship encountered some bad weather and a lot of people were affected, but otherwise the experience has been positive all the way 8), although it did make me miss Lemmings a bit I have to admit.

I've just finished browsing through the messages posted during my absence, and I'll start posting again, although I'm still hosting some people at my place for today and tomorrow so progress on things like challenges etc. will probably not fully resume until later this weekend.

Is that over yet?

Anyway, I could tell you what happened on my 5-day absence (Which happened before I found the Lemmings forums!)

Guess what happened, I was at a boarding school in Uppingham! But it was on a special occasion. It was actually a music school, since my favourite entertainment subject was music.

Basically, there were two courses running on this occasion, the National Young Pianists Week and the Total Music Powerhouse. I was at the TMP, which is all about song-creating and studio production with instruments, although I was disappointed that I didn't go to the concert. I was one step too shy to do that.

PM me if you want to know more, but from there onwards I'll stop there. I won't go too far here.

I'm seeing another upcoming wave of real life busy-ness (a week or two), so I think I really need to do some sort of fast myself this time.  I doubt I can totally stay off of the forums, but I clearly have to limit myself to something like maybe 1 hour per day on it, or possibly something more drastic.  Challenges in particular can be very time-sucking so I really need to stay off them a bit......

I lost the forum again. I take it the other forums went down for some reason and I missed it. Completely. :)

On the plus side, I found it. Obvious, I suppose, seeing as how I'm here now.
In the mean-time, I was doing the usual sort of stuff I do - roleplaying, drawing, theatre (directing a show currently), computer gaming, all that. For the last week or so I've been trying to get my website into shape again, completely redoing it because it needed it. Hopefully I'll have that finished up tomorrow and I'll be able to get back to doing other stuff.  Like playing Lemmings again. It's been too long.  :P

I was sure a lot of things happened since... but a L2 editor (even if it's in underground state) and online Lemmings versions were far beyond my expectations...  :scared:
All of you guys who helped these things to became reality are simply awesome  Thankyou!

I'll be away yet again for about 2 weeks, from May 14 to May 30, with pretty much no internet access.  Just a heads up in case people starts wondering why I stop updating the challenge threads for example during that time.  I'm also a little behind in packing and wrapping up work-related stuff before my trip, so even in the next few days, I'll be slower to respond to stuff here, and definitely won't be doing anything that requires huge amounts of time (eg. no new levels, or improvements to other people's challenge results).

I hope I'll be looking forward to new interesting challenge results and new custom levels by the time I'm back! ;)

I'll be away on holiday for a week from the 30th. Much as I'd like to celebrate my 21st with a L++ party, it's not gonna happen :P (besides the fact the network's down anyway).

Well, given it's going to be your 21st birthday according to the calendar, it is almost obligatory for you to celebrate it Insane-Steve style. ;P  (actually, not sure what the laws are down there regarding that sort of celebration and age limits)

I'm not exactly "going", but currently I'm at my parent's house during holiday break, and they don't have a wireless router.  I have been resorting to stealing unprotected WiFi access points  in order to be online at random hours of the day (and night), but looks like my evil deed has been detected and I'm increasingly having trouble finding access points I can steal that way. :( :-\ This means I won't be online as much as I normally would be.  This will last for a week or so until I go back to my own place.

Incidentally, I'll be away for a few days as well from the 30th, and thus won't have an L++ party for my 21st either. (Not that the 21st birthday means anything special over here, at least not as far as I'm aware.)

21 is the legal drinking age* in the U.S., hence my reference about "Insane-Steve style" celebration.

*Although as it turns out from a quick glance at Wikipedia, the actual truth of matter is more complicated; the 21 limit in the U.S. is more a prohibition of sales of alcohol to minors, and regulations regarding mere consumption seem to vary from state to state.

I got on to the forums while I was on holiday, but I couldn't be bothered trying to post from my iPod Touch :D. I'm back home now, though it was nice to be (mostly) disconnected for a few days. The weather was lovely too :)

By the way, the drinking age here is 18, so no trouble there ;), though I don't drink much.

Giga, your post shows contempt for what the other members of the forum and I have requested from you.

You admitted yourself that the post was not relevant to the topic.

You leave me with very few options now, and it's looking incredibly likely that you will receive at least a warning for this post.

Well, that didn't work, by which I mean the cursor doesn't show up. Odd. And I've got the conlaw professor again, although he's the least of my worries right now; I've got 30 pages and a presentation to write this week, which means I might actually be around (wooo procrastination) even though I can't actually play Lemmings.

My cursor is a bit buggy in Wine too, but it works well enough to play. (I can't take a screenshot of it because OS X removes the cursor from screenshots, but it's something to do with the mask or something, so only the horizontal segment shows up in green, and there are stray pixels)

The Random Story... Pages and pages of nonsense. It's had an excellent run, but it seems like most of the original members who posted in it in the old forum have gone off to pursue other facets of life. I wrote a post that would make a fitting end to it; if some newer member wants to breathe new life into it that would be cool, but seeing as all of the original authors have departed for other worlds I feel like we've reached the only logical appropriate stopping point.

Every time we did a server/site switch we had to hope someone had a copy of it to post so we could start where we left off; but sometimes they didn't. Would you, by chance, happen to have a copy of the story from the last forum at all; or know how I could get that? I want to put it all together and take a look at how the mad irrationality of our ramblings has changed over the past 7 or 8 years since we started doing this.

This isn't an easy decision to make, but... I'm afraid I have to leave. I don't know how long it will be for. There's just too much going on in real life at the moment, and I think the best way for me to cope with it is to put Lix and Lemmings aside completely, at least for a while. I'm really glad you invited me back and that I've been able to contribute to the community set and other aspects of the Lix project; it's been great fun. I really hope that I'll be able to come back soon and contribute further, but even if not, I just want to say thank you, and good luck with everything!

(Actually, I think I ought to be a bit more specific. The department where I work is closing down in the near future. I've been summoned to a meeting on May 1, and I'm expecting to be told that I will be redundant. I've worked there for nearly eight years, but only part-time since I've been caring for my mother, so I don't have a great CV. So I'm going to have to put some serious time and effort into searching for a new direction. I'll keep you all posted if there's any further news!)

I wish you all the best and that things settle for you again as soon as possible. And that you'll get something you'll enjoy doing.

No matter how much time off you need; I think it goes without saying, but please don't feel obliged to anything regarding the community set, or anything you said you might do for it. What you've done is already more than anyone could have asked for, and I want to thank you again for your contributions.

Just a note that from 14th to 21st July I will be on holiday to Italy. I am very excited about this nice, hot and dry place, which will certainly be unlike this horribly wet weather pattern that Britain have had throughout this July. This also means I can't play any lemmings games. However, my holiday destination does apparently have Wi-Fi access so I might still be able to post on the forum if I want to.

Some people already know, but I won't be around for the next 1.5-2 months (not that it makes such a huge difference to my recent activity).
I'll travel across Europe for 3 weeks with a couple of friends, and then move to Canada, where I'll take some time to get to know the surroundings.

I have actually been back on time from my vacation, but basically found myself more or less buried with work, and just generally afraid to resurface here for the detrimental distraction it is bounded to place on real life.

But things have slowed down slightly now, so I will start to slowly catch up on this forum again, but don't expect too much activity from me over the next few weeks.

Yes, I still remember I made some promises of doing something for some people (something about music ordering in DOS Lemmings, and customizing cgaspec files) "by July", which is sadly coming soon to a close.  I will do my best to at least get one of those promises fulfilled before end of July, even if the people have probably stopped waiting at this point.  Sorry. :XD: ;)

I'm sitting in the math library, IRC is blocked via this particular connection, so you guys must entertain me via the forum. Also... I'd appreciate it much if you could get me a copy of the CIA's most wanted list.

That's pretty funny, m?bius :D (excuse my standard keyboard! ;P)

Anyway, I was the one who requested ccexplore to make a program to be able to create custom cgaspecx.dat files (kind-of like his myvgaspec), though someone else, according to ccexplore, has requested him to apply music fixes for the cga-lemmings or something, which might come in handy to me as well 8)

And ccexplore, I'm glad to be back on the forum today! earlier this week I've sent an email at your 'ccexplore@yahoo.com' address that I came across while viewing older topics on this forum. I haven't seen a reply yet in all my mail, so I'm guessing you might not have got it yet. After travelling across Europe for 3 weeks, preparing a couple of things the week after, and then touring through Canada again for 2 more weeks, I've finally arrived and moved in to my destination in Canada. I still need to settle down, getting used to the new surroundings and university, so I don't know how active I'll be during the next weeks yet.

Here in Canada I've seen groundhogs, squirrels and chipmunks, but unfortunately no lemmings, beavers or capybaras yet.

Hello everyone!

I'm new, though I have been lurking here for a little while. I couldn't find a specific topic that seemed to be for introducing oneself, so I hope that it's ok to do so here - it seems relevant enough, as far as I can tell. :P

Erm, what to say... Let's see... I was first introduced to the Lemmings series in 1993 when a relative bought the Game Gear port of the game, but my favourite version of the first game ultimately turned out to be the Amiga original - though, of the home-console ports, the Master System version is my favourite, since it's more-or-less the same as the Game Gear version, but with a higher resolution to do things in.

Aside from those two, my favourite games in the series tend to be the ones that others appear to consider to be the "black sheep" titles - specifically, Lemmings 3D, The Lemmings Chronicles/All New World of Lemmings, and Lomax (the latter of which was a dream come true for me, because I'm a major platformer nut as well as a Lemmings fan, and it was something that I had long hoped for). This said, even after all these years, I'm still not sure what I make of Lemmings Paintball (which I run in a Windows 95 VM, since for some reason Paintball has some audio problems under WINE on my main box), and I've never played Lemmings Revolution at all (and I'm unsure if I want to let myself in for the hassle of getting it running on the hardware I use).

As for my puntastic username, I was actually struggling to think of one myself and mentioned this fact to my boyfriend, who suggested (amongst others) "Prob Lem", which I found so amusing that I just had to go with it. :P

That's all there is to say for now, methinks. It's nice to be here. :)

EDIT: Actually, having thought about it some more, I do have one more thing to say for the moment. :P I was wondering, what's the rule on responding to old topics, here, please? I couldn't seem to find this info, for some reason. Is it best to bump old topics if you have something worthwhile to add to them, or, as it is in some places out there, is it preferred that a user posts a new thread and links to a related old one? Thankyou for any advice on this - I don't want to cause any hassle. ;)

Welcome to the forums!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoy L3D and The Lemmings Chronicles.  I enjoy those games, too, but sadly neither one gets much discussion on the forums.

We don't have an official rule on bumping threads, so if you have something pertinent to add that is directly related to the topic at hand, go ahead and bump the thread rather than create a new one.  Also, you are encouraged to add your input to threads like the "Top 5, Bottom 5" thread, even though nobody has posted there in over three months.

I would still use common sense when it comes to bumping, though.  Don't bump a thread that is no longer relevant or if you don't have anything meaningful to add to the discussion.  Also please refrain from bumping threads for the sole purpose of bringing them to the top of the page.

This isn't really the right topic for this post, but I kind of feel I should let you all know.

Mother died at one o'clock this morning. She was taken into the hospice on Tuesday and her last few days were peaceful. We're doing okay; the rest of the family and our friends have all been very supportive. I'm not sure what's going to happen from here, but certainly we're going to be very busy for a long while sorting things out. I'll try to get back to Lix-ing as soon as I can, but I have no idea when that will be.

Best wishes to everyone

Oh wow, I'd been gone for a while, hadn't I? One minute, I was making a tool for the Master System version of Lemmings, and the next, I'd disappeared. Oops!

So, what happened? Back then, I was doing a college course I didn't enjoy very much. However, I decided to press on with it because I wanted to do a university course where the focus is on games programming. Programming in general interests me, but I also want to make games, so...

Anyway, the college course got really ugly, with three separate long projects to do, all at once, and none of them had anything to do with games development whatsoever! Not only was it time consuming, it was very stressful.

Thankfully, I pulled through in the end, and I have now moved to Bolton and started going to university there. Granted, Bolton's has been ranked the worst university in this country, but I'm a believer of getting out what you put in. It's not just what you're being taught, but also what you study out of hours. Four months in, and I feel that my programming skills have improved, and my love for mathematics has been resurrected. I haven't been this happy in a long time.

I got sent a PM this weekend about a level design contest, and that made me remember this forum. I do love it here, so I've decided to come back.

Seems I've caught a bit of the "absent moderator syndrome" lately :P. I have various reasons / excuses for this:

- Recent computer crash (I haven't even put Lemmix or Lix back on it yet :-[)
- Puzzlehunt (this covers off the last couple of weeks)
- Slightly more going on IRL than before (nothing really noteworthy, just accumulation of things).

But really, my interest in all things comes and goes, and that includes Lemmings.

You'll be glad to know I still log in here during off times :)

I can guarantee any replays I've posted prior to my temporary departure from the site are lost, unless someone else has them saved, since I never bothered to attempt to preserve them over several reformats (Heck, I don't even bother to preserve them next time I want to record a new replay for the same level...)... fortunately, they aren't really that impressive. The only one I can remember being REALLY impressive was the 1-builder solution to Danger 29 of LPDOS, but that replay doesn't work on new versions of the player anyway since it was recorded before the change in bomber mechanics.

Out of curiosity, is this just personal vacation, or is there some sort of Kiwi national holiday around this time?  (Hmm, apparently Chinese New Year is also around the corner but presumably that's just coincidence.)

There's a (minor) event on, but really this is just an excuse for an extended weekend break :)

I posted this on the IRC about a week ago - in fact, I got the call the day after I posted my plan for ClamLix :D. But now the timing is confirmed, so here it is for everyone:

New job. New town. Leaving home (cue mad rush to my profile page to check my age :P).

Essentially, new life. Starting in two weeks.

Where Lemmings fits in is anyone's guess. But this place is my home on the internet, and level designing is my #1 creative outlet, so I have no intention of abandoning either. :)

Exciting.  Good luck on your new life! ;)

I'm sure you will at least find time to post on a forum game or two, although hopefully it won't come to that point (then again maybe it's a good thing depending on what you have going in non-Lemmings part of life).

Hello again! *waves*

Things have settled to the point where I feel I have time for Lemmings again :). And the forums work. And my internet works. Fun times :P

Now seems like a good time for a change that, frankly, has been coming for a while (i.e. everyone calls me this by now anyway) :). Plus a new addition to the Beach Clam avatar gallery :D

Well, it was never in doubt that you are no spammer, but the lack of a victim in your latest avatar is somewhat of a (small) letdown...... :-\

...hmm maybe spam (as in the meat product) should be the latest victim depicted in the avatar, for logical/symbolic reasons. ;P

I'm going on vacation in the US for two weeks, departing a week from now. Not the time of year I'd have picked to go to Arizona, but there are family reasons behind this (of the happy variety, not that other sort :))

If you do see the Grand canyon or any national parks there; I recommend it; they are pretty spectacular.

Just keep in mind; it's extremely hot; especially this time of year. Of course maybe it's that hot in NZ for all I know.
while your there; [if this is a thing that they don't have in NZ, I know it's sort of rare in my area] try corndogs!
Title: Re: General Comings and Goings
Post by: Clam on July 21, 2014, 10:45:12 AM
Grand Canyon is definitely on the to-do list :)
It most certainly is not that hot here in NZ (different hemisphere = opposite season). It's 40°C there and more like 40°F here!
And we have corndogs here, but we call them hotdogs. And what they call hotdogs we just call a sausage. (I'm working on learning the "US English" language :P)

If I'm right that will be your winter months just now Clam (June, July, August) I think August is usually the coldest of the three then again I could be wrong.

I wonder if you are going to the (London bridge in arizona), which I think is located in lake havasu city because I wonder if that was the london bridge that was meant in the song london bridge is falling down.

It looks for certain that this bridge is not falling down anymore.

Hello, all! I am back.

I suppose most of you probably either don't remember me or never knew me in the first place, but I used to come around here quite often (well, "here" as in "the last incarnation of this site, and Lemmings Universe before that", not so much here at this specific location). I had got quite busy with college and all some years back, and had actually not even played any Lemmings game in years before I broke my leg two years back and ended up playing through the entirety of the game on a fortuitously available PSP to preserve my sanity while recovering. After that, I decided to get as many Lemmings games as possible working on my computer again, but didn't have much time to play them after I recovered.

Now I finally have more time to get back into playing Lemmings (and hopefully actually get some levels made this time around like I'd always planned). Not as much time as I would like, of course, because now I have work instead of school, but hey. Still more time than I had. Also, I'm not as burned out on forums as I was a few years back, when I mostly drifted away from all of them.

Anyhow, yeah. Slightly rambling story there. For anyone who does still remember me, I'm back. For everyone else, nice to meet you! I doubt I'll be as active around here as I was ten years ago, but I hope to at least drop in fairly frequently again from here on out, having found the place again. :D

Got back home from Arizona today :)

Grand Canyon - check
Extreme heat - check (but dodged the worst of it - just before I got there it was 40°C with dust storms)
Salad bar with cantaloupe (and not banana) - check
Corndogs - check
London Bridge - nope (too far out of the way)

Prob Lem -- Hi! Yeah, it's been a while since I've been around here very much. Thanks for the welcome!

geoo -- Have a good trip! Sounds interesting.

Clam -- Sounds like you had a good trip, minus the extreme heat (although to my mind, at least, that's unavoidable in the southwest).

NaOH -- Good luck!

Giga -- I've always had a slightly iffy grasp of the whole junior/senior/whathaveyou thing (I think senior is the last one?), but good luck!

I still have interest in Lemmings but right now I am more busy then I ever have been in my entire life. I don't like it much at all to be honest. I quite honestly would rather be a bum then work hard. Money/Independence isn't worth that much to me. I wish I could sit around and play Lemmings all day  :(

good luck to everyone else who also seems to be busy around here.

I'm going to be staying at my girlfriend's house out-of-town for the next week and a half, so it's likely I won't be on very much. I do have my laptop with me, so at times when she isn't home (exams and whatnot), I'll still be able to work on my projects and possibly even pop onto the forums, but yeah, expect me to be a lot less active for the next week and a half or so. Have fun guys! :)

I've noticed you have been quite active on the forum Namida, Welcome back. Hope your new flat is okay Clam, let us know how you get on.  It was all happening in Scotland we had our independance referendum vote which was very close but the thing about it was it's got many of us talking about politics. I was so close to bumping into Alex Salmond the first minister, I was in the same centre as him. I was wondering why all the cameras were there.  ???

I'm still struggling along with my mental health issue, lets hope things do improve. I've not been too well for a long time but lets not dwell on the negatives. That ain't good. I'll need to get back into playing custom lemmings levels.

Thanks for the kind comments! The flat's going fine so far, although 'flat' is somewhat of a misnomer - it's perched on the side of a hill. It's not the easiest place to get to, but the view is worth it :)

We just had a vote here in NZ too - the general election. Our PM now has his mug on the Wikipedia front page. Lovely.

My turn now finally to be out traveling, approximately from the 11th to the 25th, with likely sporadic and limited Internet access (plus it will likely be through a phone or tablet, so I won't be too inclined to type much--maybe a random Zendo guess here and there).

Just as a heads up, I'm going to be away from home for about 2 weeks. As usual, I'll be able to come online / work on my stuff, but probably not as much as I usually do. In case of emergencies, all the staff members have several different outside-of-the-site contact details for me. :)

So I decided to share a bit of the things that happened to me in the last months (WARNING: pls do not read while eating ):

Last December I noticed that I had problems with eating my food. It did not go down smoothly and I needed to chew some of it again (a bit like a cow). I thought it was not a big deal, because I had a cough and maybe some slime got in the way.
But the problems didn't go away (they got worse) and from time to time I felt some pain for ~ 10 min in my upper body. Also I needed to throw up slime from out of my esophagus (google translated that word sry english is just my 2nd language) more and more often.
So I went to a doctor and he sent me right to an Internist who made a gastric reflex (google translated that word, too) inside my esophagus, stomach and small intestine. He found out that my muscle to my stomach is tensed and my esophagus is widened, because slime and food that did not made it through gathered there (and came up again thorough my mouth more and more often).
That problem is called "Achalasie" in German (achalasia in english) and is a rare hereditary disease (my father has no problems at all).
In the time I could only eat slower and slower to the point that I must stop eating certain things. Also I must throw up slime at a regulary base now.
I made an x-ray that confirmed the problem and on this friday I had the last big check up before the operations that should fix the cause.
I had to eat nothing the whole week to clear up my esophagus. Normally the gastric reflexes are done while I am asleep but on that friday I had also to do sth else. A pressure measuring. A little hose was inserted into my nose to get in my esophagus, whlie I had to gulp water. It was very uncomfortable and while I was laying there slime comming out of my mouth (because I should only gulp on command) the doctor had problems running the program that was doing the measuring. I just thought: "Man get your program working NOW!" But after that was finished the second part could be done while I was sleeping.
Now I have 2 choices to fix to problem:
1.) Three op's with a balloon which will be inflated in the muscle to get it open more and more until it is normal again. Nearly no side effect apart from maybe some little pain. BUT a <2% chance to cause "tragic" consequences: The esophagus tears up => emergency op.
2.) Cut the muscle open and "strangulate" the stomach opening so I dont get permanent indigestion (looked that up too) . "Higher chance for Side Effects" like sewings go open again (So I need to come back again).

I choosed  1.) because the doctor makes the procedure in three "slow" sessions to make it as safe as possible and I am not likely to have more Side effects.
The first procedure is next wensday and I need to stay until thursday. The sessions after that will be 1 month apart each.
After each session eating will become more and more normal and the throwing up slime will go away slowly.

I just wanted to share my little "medical history" to you and I am hoping to become healthy again in the near future.

(I hope not too many horrible typos made it through  ;))

I'm back from the hospital! Everything in the first session was fine and apart from a little bit of pressure pain (which was expected) I'm also feeling alright. The next days I just can eat liquid stuff, but I already recognise that I can swallow better than before.  :)

And a big thx for your comments, too.  :lix-smile:

Thanks! :) It's good to be back. Things got extremely busy for me in the last few months, and I wound up more or less disappearing from the face of the internet. Too much theatre all at once, had to buy a new car, there were some family issues, and a bunch of other stuff. All of that seems to have finally levelled off at this point, and I'm hoping over the summer I can finally get into finishing up all those half-started Lemmings levels I have sitting around -- but who knows. At least I have time to play games and browse forums again, and that's something!

It seems like there are a lot more level design programs and Lemmings-related projects in general going than last time I had time to investigate all that, so I intend to be taking a look around there. I'm still running Lemmings under DOSBox, since I've got so many other DOS games to emulate as well, but it may be time to finally move on from LemEdit. :D

Little News Edit: Pack status 131/150! Not very much to go and I am looking for some additional music tracks at the moment (Found a handful already).

Heh, yeah, it has apparently been out of date for some time now. Last time I was particularly active around the forums (and level design in particular), LemEdit was still going strong and Cheapo had just come onto the scene, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. I kept using LemEdit even when I was mostly away from the forums, so that's what I've still got. Moving on should be interesting!

I've been doing volunteering and it's coming up for a year since I started, it's very rewarding, I must encourage more of us to give it a go. I help out at the local hospital shop stacking all the non alcoholc drinks up in the fridge. The sugar free ones tend to go very fast. :)

You will enjoy chips challenge 2 Mobius, I remember playing the first one to see what the fuss was all about, now I know it's actually quite a good game.

I'll be away from May 12 to May 28.  At least half of the period (maybe more) I should have Internet access, though don't expect much replies since I am no fan of typing on the mobile phone.  The main point is that I probably can't (certainly not efficiently) perform any extensive admin duties during that time.

Honestly, with work to deal with in past few weeks, I might actually have more chances to read the forum during my away period, sadly. :XD:

Tomorrow will be my next visit at the hospital due to my Achalasia, but this time (if everything works as planned) I can go home the same day.
My own bed is far more comfortable than the ones at the hospital.

Hi Bsmith

Welcome to the forum

It's a very adictive game I feel, What lemming games have you been playing lately Bsmith? I've played through lemmings tribes recently again, a really good game in my opinion. If you get a chance why not give the family feud a try, it's been very fun playing it on the forum. :)

Thanks for the welcome.  Recently I have been playing the original and ONML.  I want to try playing the Tribes but I have to find a copy first.  I'll give forum Family Feud a try while I'm here today.

I'm going to be "away" for a week or so, in the sense I usually mean when I say I'll be "away" - ie: I will have my laptop with me, and will have internet access, but won't be on as much and probably won't do much (if any) work on projects until I get back; I'll still be here enough to answer questions and run the level design contest voteoff though. :)

EDIT: Should mention, this doesn't apply until about 4AM (UTC) July 11th. I only posted this sooner since I expected to be asleep or busy for most of the time between posting this message and then.

I'm currently writing from my new Linux (ubuntu) Laptop :)     which I spent on ~10h yesterday trying to get it running.

Apparently the new UFEI booting system (with WIN10) blocks linux systems entirely from booting, so I needed to downgrade the BIOS version (allowing that even to happen you need to save temporary files from a failed installation and change lines in a ~500lines document ) after that ubuntu still did not boot.........more changes in the BIOS were needed so that ubuntu is trusted in the UEFI booting system.
With this taking~8hrs I found out that my wifi card isn't supported yet in the ubuntu system.
With more googling around I found this site (on the 3rd google page :P):
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2304250
and finally even the wifi card is working now :)

Today another 30min was spent on getting WINE working with NL in the right resolution.
But now it seems the basics are finally working

Also one of these awesome Lemming plushes were under my christmas tree :) :)

Congrats on getting stuff running. The secure restrictive BIOSes, I haven't made my mind up how to feel about them. You will find a ton of info online, so disabling temporarily or downgrading is largely a matter of time.

Wifi cards need weird proprietary drivers, this is traditional. Love how getting Lemings to run is counted with the basics, like installing a driver for some hardwar needed daily.

Most such PCs should have an option in UEFI to disable secure boot.  While I can't 100% guarantee it's the case for your particular laptop, I strongly suspect you might have taken more steps than necessary in dealing with the boot issue. Oh well, at least you got things working eventually.

Thanks namida!

Suggestions of Lemmings similar/clones games for current PC systems? I'm lacking screenshots here at the forums.

Well the main custom Lemmings engines here are NeoLemmix and Lix.

Both support handy things like backwards/forward framestepping for extra precision, replays and directional select.

To give you some gameplay videos:

NeoLemmix:
With commentary and live-playing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2nSXE5pSpQ&index=10&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlKa23xOtzcGO4-6cPUwhhia
Some replay videos (made with a slightly older version which has not the recently added features like skill blueprints):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5_UaOnj2tg&index=19&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlIESPAE2425fkWjpeDl4M9s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02FuzjU3_ng&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlKL_gpsNgZfNTRvt_28AVqf&index=1

Lix:
With commentary and live-playing (again :P):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KlJISHuAF8&index=12&list=PLKR1N9oJTTlKa23xOtzcGO4-6cPUwhhia
And one playthrough video from Flopsy who started playing the Lix community pack:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsvRsp8Dg8w&index=1&list=PLXsuXbpwwJzFCPXpgesDyNhXOMhSAHS1T

The playlist has some more lix videos as well.

I am more from the NeoLemmix side here. Some links I can recommend to get started 8-):
Topic for newest versions of the player (opens NeoLemmix level packs and levels), the Editor, the Flexi Toolkit (used to make own level packs) and the Graphic Set Tool (used to make custom tilesets): http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2979.0
The original games as NeoLemmix packs: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2479.0
My own level pack (shameless advertising!): http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2175.0
The Neolemmix manual (could be slightly outdated): http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2414.0

And here the Lix link to get started ;):
New D-version, but without the multiplayer (coming soon) and the Old C++ version with multiplayer:
http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2815.0

If you want a list of all current Lemming packs: http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=1822.0

Now you have Lemming/Lix stuff for ages! ;)   Have fun! :)

My own level pack (shameless advertising!): http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2175.0

Although this is a great pack, it's also a very hard one and I wouldn't recommend it until you've played a fair bit of fanmade stuff. :P

The two packs I'd most recommend to new users, GigaLems and GeoffLems, unfortunately haven't been updated to work with the newest versions of NeoLemmix. The creator of GeoffLems is no longer active on the forums, so I might update that pack myself at some point.

Revenge of the Lemmings may be a good choice - it's an extremely large pack that covers pretty much the entire difficulty spectrum, from ultra-easy to crazy-hard. So, there's something in there for everyone. I'm not sure off-hand if it's been updated to the very newest versions of NeoLemmix either, but it has been updated to much newer versions than these other two have.
Title: Re: General Comings and Goings
Post by: Wafflem on October 19, 2016, 08:20:57 PM
Zemmings Vol. 1 (http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=2944.0) is also a strong recommendation. It only has eight levels, but I'd say the levels are not overly hard and a lot of fun to solve. This one will also give you a taste of one of the best graphic sets designed by the creator of the pack himself!

Revenge of the Lemmings will not work on newer versions of NeoLemmix (last update for it was January 16, 2016 which was built on an older version of the Flexi Player), especially how some of the levels rely on the Cheapo gimmick which has been removed.

If you want to play the Lemmings Plus series (http://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=1922.0) as well (also highly recommended!), Lemmings Plus I is also a great pack for new users, it has a much fairer difficulty curve and the levels only get much harder in the last two ranks. The same applies to Lemmings Plus Omega for those who want to accustom themselves to the new NeoLemmix features such as objects and skills.

I'm going to be visiting the original DMA offices and the Lemmings statues in Dundee. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and get some videos.
Going to Glamis Castle and visiting Edinburgh as well

Needless to say I won't be in the IRC until very late on Sunday after today.
I'll still be able to respond to my PMs on the forums though if you need to get hold of me ;P

That's really awesome, Flopsy! Let us all know how it goes! It really must be an exciting trip for you guys  !

That's also really awesome how you're visitng the DMA offices like Prob Lem did during her trip!

It always seems to rain here in Scotland as they say well hoping you will have some nice weather when you go there flopsy.

Oh I remember Prob lem getting a few pictures of the lemming statues. The statues look quite cool. :)

I'll be sure to make a new topic about the trip to the Lemmings statues/old DMA Office.

I would have replied to Prob Lem's topic but a forum message said that I should make a new topic instead, eventhough they are pretty much about the same thing.
What would be the correct thing to do?

I think creating a new topic is a good idea. After all, this is about your experiences in Scotland, not Prob Lem's. :)

@Flopsy; be sure to try a pretzel there and tell me what it's like. Because several years ago friends of my family from Sctoland was visiting us here in U.S. and she got a pretzel (can't remember if it was hard or soft...) and she was shocked and confused by the pretzel saying "what is this? This is a pretzel?" And for some reason I don't remember I never got to ask her what exactly pretzels are "supposed" to look like. Or maybe she told me but I forget.

I'll be on vacation from Nov 11 until Dec 7th, so namida will have to run the admin show on his own next week (which he's basically been doing for the past year(s) anyway). I'll probably only have sporadic internet access, and don't plan to check the forums or IRC.

You may already heard that I have some internet problems at my place currently :(     (writing this at the university)

Now I know the cause: The internet company did not properly recognise my roommate's payment! That's also why everything is blinking green and connecting as normal here! Just the internet is blocked. The company already apologised and if we are lucky it's back online 0:01am (German timezone) on Tuesday, if we are unlucky 0:01am (German timezone) on Thursday, as they sadly only start to work on it on Monday. Also we get ~2€ off onto the next payment.

When it's back up I will try to double my video output on Youtube for a few days to slowly catch up to the status quo. Also then I will try to convert Simon's and my stream to flv + upload it when it's ready.

So no big activity from me until it's back up, only some checks from the university's pc.

RANT: I hate the incompetence of internet providers here in Germany!!!  The cable network in Germany is behind the likes in Romania and the service can be utter crap sometimes most of the time!!

At least I can build some levels and record the game I want to Let's play after Tiberium Dawn. Yes I finished recording that already and as I have nothing to do besides university stuff now I can/want to pre-produce even more ;P

And for Giga's feelings towards comcast:

"Ohhh that's sad you have a problem with your cable?  Please stay ready in November for our techician from 10-18.  Wait you need to work...that's sad maybe you can switch to another cable company? Oh wait we are the only one avialable in this region....ohhh then you have to deal with our times.......ohhhhh"

my dad's been in and out of a hospital for a while now so things have been really hectic. I'm not going to be around as much as I have been, but I will still attend to the contest as best I can.

After this; things may get even more hectic for a little while as I may or may not be moving soon, can't say yet but in any case I probably won't get around to any of the projects I had been working on any time soon. However considering Mobius' law [Planned events tend to never come to fruition and events tend to happen without notice] none of this may matter.

I'll be a lot less active than usual, both in relation to the forums and to gameplay / development, from tomorrow onwards, until the 28th or so; especially from the 19th to the 23rd (during which I might not be on at all). In case of emergency, it's best to contact another admin during this time - if it's something only I can sort out, they have details on how to contact me outside of the site.

I'll be my usual level of activity for the rest of today, though.

As some on here may already know, my laptop broke about 2 weeks ago now and I've been trying to make do with the broken screen for a bit.

Sadly it meant I could not design any new SEB Lems levels so I've lost nearly half a month to this breakage.
My laptop went in for repair on Monday and now it's been confirmed it won't be fixed until next Monday.

Having to organise things on my phone's internet at the moment and I have no access to any SEB Lems content or Neo Lemmix for that matter!

I'm sure my absence from the IRC has been noticed and I hope to be back soon. If anyone needs to get a hold of me, it's best to PM me at the moment although I won't be much use until my laptop is back.

Just thought I'd drop a post to let everyone know that I haven't dropped off the face of the Earth

Currently trying to restore my laptop but it will take hours and possibly days.

Rest assured SEB Lems is backed up and safe

I'm just going through some fatigue and a break.
During this break I've decided to on my own time replay more pokemon (Pacifically Nuzlocke Pokemon White)
I've also revisited freedom planet on hard mode and because of how rusty I am, I'm getting my ass wooped. (Pardon my french)

As for Neolemmix stuff, I've taken a break from level maken to focus on tileset updating, but i'm also pacing myself from updating Sky battalion, Not only did I discovered beta tiles from the stage exist, but also recently a friend of mine (A different one who goes by kreg) his mother is in the hopital at the time of this post and i wish her speedy recovery. I'm really worried for both her and Kreg.

That and because of how long the next stable release is taking (Seriously how much longer? It's killing me) its been a bit trivial to make levels at the cost of having to fix something that could possibly make em well unsolvable (That's most updates goes) but even still, while I can get the experimental versions of the next update, I'm afraid of encountering some major game breaking bug, and that makes it not as approachable as it looks.

If I may be so bold; I think you look better with the beard ;)

The beard/no beard decision is made for me because of these 2 points:

1.) It itches at a ceratin level of growth and I hate itchy parts. If it's grows to that point --- away it goes!
2.) If it grows long, I need to take extra care of it.  I want my facial hair short and easy to be taken care of (also decent looking ;P). If the barber asks how I want my hair 1 word is enough: Short!

^ I have to totally agree with your philosophy :D

I'm still around and you can ask me questions but my interest in Lemmings has waned quite a bit in the past months/year. I probably won't be working on making anything anytime soon, I may play occasionally.

I made a resolution to myself that I will stop offering to test people's packs. This is not because I don't care or don't want to; I don't have the time/dedication to do this effectively yet I keep promising to test then fail to offer much help. I will play/test occasionally when I have time and feel like it, but I must stop making promises I can't keep.

----------
A couple of weeks ago I started to develop this weird pain then noticed something alarming; I went to a doctor and got some antibiotics but he wasn't sure what was going on, so I'm not out of the woods yet. It comes and goes so it's difficult to tell if it's getting better or not yet. I'm just worried in the back of my mind that it's something serious.

Having severe PC problems at the moment. This will hopefully be over soon when I get a new machine and put my old lady of 9 years here to rest. ;P

Ability to do anything is stongly limited atm. Recording videos impossible. Will watch feedback only of my own  levels at the current contest and record my solving of the other levels when I get the new machine set up.

As I am not able to record atm, the YT activity will of course be affected as well.

I'm sorry to hear that as well, GigaLem :( :( :( That indeed sounds super-difficult. I understand that feeling of stress of adjusting to unexpected things that you don't want, and the difficulty associated with that. Thanks for sharing these concerns with us. I agree with Nessy, talking about these things instead of bottling them up is a great first step to dealing with your situation. I hope things gets better, GigaLem.

I wish a good and healthy end and start of the year to everybody and the people that are dear to you.

I won't be away over the end of the year but I assume many will.
From February on next year I won't be probably that active anymore since I really have to take on real life.
I'm actually afraid if I can make it but I have to try it.

From 3rd January for possibly a few weeks, I won't be around on the forums or IRC very much.

Lucia is having major surgery on 4th January and she will be unable to move around much for weeks following it so I'm going to have to look after her.

This is also why I probably won't be able to make the Lix session on 13th January but I'll see how it goes.

My YouTube Channel won't be affected because I have already scheduled all of January's videos.

I hope for you both everything will be alright and the surgery goes without any complications! Medical issues suck  and hopefully after this procedure there won't be the need for further surgerys.

Also while I'm posting here: Happy newyear to everyone and may it be a successful year to you all! :)

God Speed Lucia!

on another note, I do have two things to say...

first its my niece's birthday at the time of this post, say happy birthday to Audrey

second, im thinking of making my own blog topic on this forum for things going on with me and reviews on games and what not...I plan to do it soon

I wish Audrey a happy birthday

I also think that starting a blog is not a bad idea. I know that Simon has one and mobius had one on the forums, and as mentioned earlier in this thread using it to express your thoughts and feelings will be healthy.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes for Lucia's surgery. The surgery was a success but she needed looking after for a long time after it.
I'm not going to go into details at Lucia's request.

I should be back on Saturday afternoon hopefully just in time for the Lix session.
I've been reading the forum and IRC everyday since.

Over new year I moved into another flat. Unfortunately it hasn't yet any internet connection and although my ISP promised that it will be up "within days", I now got the information that I won't have any internet there for the next 3-4 weeks. Therefore I will be mostly absent from the forums during January. So don't worry - I will be coming back :)

I think I will step back a bit from testing levels from other people for the time being and focus on my own projects and maintaining the level contests.

I still will take a few small personal test requests if the person doesn't want me to hold back my opinions.

After much thought and recent events causing my level making confidence to take a severe knock, I've decided to take an indefinite break from IRC activities.

This was not an easy decision but I feel it's the best one to make for now for myself and everyone else.

EDIT: Other parts of my life outside this community have deteriorated to a point where I need to focus on those parts instead, it's nothing personal against anyone, recent events just opened my eyes a bit to how things are in my life.

During this time, I will not be hosting anymore Jackbox sessions or making anymore YouTube content.

I will still develop level pack content and testers for MegSEGAbytes should carry on as normal (if they wish).

I'll be travelling for the next 4.5 months from tonight, so I don't know how frequently I'll check the forums.
While I'm in Ethiopia (first 3 weeks) and Spain (1 week) probably not at all, while I'll have to see how my internship in the US (last 3.5 months) goes.
So send any moderation requests etc to the other admins/mods.

btw if anyone lives in the Bay area California, we could consider meeting up at some point.

So the internship is at Bay Area?  Is it at or close to Silicon Valley?  In any case, good luck and hope it works out well!  Are you alone there or do you have other people you already know that are either also interning or are currently living near the area?

Kinda expensive though, do they help subsidize or completely pay for the housing for the duration of the internship?
Title: Re: General Comings and Goings
Post by: geoo on June 21, 2018, 07:38:45 PM
Bay Area, Mountain View specifically. I guess that might allow you to guess the company I'm interning with. :P
And it's a paid internship, so while I have to cover the housing cost myself it's at least manageable.
I have colleague interning roughly at the same time, I know someone (via the African teaching connection) who's working at YouTube nearby, and a Berkeley student.

I'm surprised how well (i.e. it can actually load pages) the Wifi here works, from my past experience Wifi in Ethiopia has always been dreadful and the only somewhat realiable way of getting internet was mobile data.

Hah, I can also dig out some pictures from my previous two visits. Monkeys on campus and construction scaffolding made entirely of eucalyptus wood are just some of the cool things here :)

I'm starting a PGCE (teacher training in mathematics) at the University of Hull. It will mean a complete change to my routine, as my old job was 6-10pm, but the course will be 9am-4pm. That actually leaves me roughly the same amount of free time, since it took over an hour each way to travel to and from my workplace. I just don't know yet how the change will affect my productivity. I hope I will still have some time for Lemmings and Lix, and I will definitely still be in the chat in the evenings.

I mentioned in another thread, that I wanted to work an both the shimmer and the pickup-sprite-change/skill reordering this week. However real life got in the way and now I have far less time to work on this than I thought (which also explains why I will be less active in IRC for the next one or two weeks).
I still hope to get at least some experimental version with the shimmier done, but nothing guaranteed...

I've still been doing the volunteering, get to meet a lot of nice people, a lot of patients at the hospital are really friendly  and it's good to have a little chat with them when we are going round the wards with the trolley. I remember once or twice the fridge in the shop was not working so the soft drinks and everything ended up being warm instead of ice cold. Lots of complaints (lol)

I've still been a regular on the voicemails with the prank call community. Seems to be a hobby of mine at the moment.

I've actually been making a lemmings pack as well, I'm hoping for about 80 levels but I'll see how that goes.

So, you may have noticed that I'm not very active on the forums lately. That's because pretty much all of my free time is currently going into my YouTube channel, now that the subscriber count is somewhat increasing, slowly but steadily :) .

Though I did have a couple of new level ideas for Lemmings Open Air that came to me yesterday. But the next test release is not going to come until I have created another batch of 30 levels for a second rank.

I am still working on fixing all the backroutes Arty found in his Let's Play of Lemmings World Tour. The Professional rank is more or less (re-)done, but I still have to tackle the Diva backroutes before I upload a new version.

I'm glad you asked!

I mentioned it before in the "Lemmings Forums on YouTube" thread - my channel has nothing to do with Lemmings at all, though. ;)

Metalvision Song Contest (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC10Mc0EcTYv1rxEreemZ5FQ?view_as=subscriber)

But you may notice the music production sounding similar to the tracks I recorded for Lemmings World Tour... :D

My "Strato Incendus" channel may feature some Lemmings-related videos eventually - for example if I decide to do a creator's commentary, as many others here have done, most likely starting with Lemmings World Tour. Especially the Groupie rank is something I could elaborate on a little further.

Or I could showcase "Lemmicks" in its entirety - and while Nessy announced a while ago he was planning to attempt it, I think he didn't get to it yet. ;)

And of course, I could upload all my rock versions of the Lemmings music to that channel as well - since my Metalvision viewers probably wouldn't know what those refer to, even though they might still like them genre-wise.

I would of course also like to LP other people's packs, but given how early I got stuck on each of them, that would be a pretty short-lived experience. I've played a lot of NeoLemmix, but "horizontally" across packs, not "vertically" within one pack. :) And those which I could beat - namely SubLems and Lemmings Migration - well, those are done already, so I can't play them blind again.

I guess I'll have to wait for something of which I can be pretty certain that it's in a difficulty domain similar to SubLems or Lemmings Migration. :D

Hey all, I haven’t been that active for a while, I see the last time I’ve really solved levels and posted on the forums is from last Summer.

Since Spring-Summer 2019 I have had most challenging times with my real life stuff and I really have tried to do lots of things to uphold my mental health. Lemmings is and probably will always be one such thing that gives me joy. I haven’t really played anything else regarding to video games, either, after completing Celeste in January 2019.

But I haven’t played even Lemmings for almost a year now, and there’s another reason for that, that my laptop is already 6 years old and getting slower and slower. I noticed that even NeoLemmix got a bit strenuous to use. Also, I realized a while ago that people moved from irc to Discord, and Discord is a pretty heavy software for my computer and it lags too much to be used pleasantly for me. Another thing about Discord that I’ve mentioned many times earlier is that it asks captcha from me always when logging in and sending logging confirmation to my e-mail, which makes Discord even slower to use for me (I am using the desktop app and a USB modem).

Yeah, I should be getting a new PC sooner or later for sure. For now I’m a bit worried about my Microsoft Office license that I got from my university to this computer, and I’ve already graduated so I can’t move that license to a new computer anymore. :P But that’s a minor thing, or at least it should be.

I’m reading the forums every day still! But I can’t keep up with the Discord discussion, nowadays I am not reading them practically at all, there’s too much going on there. :P And all in all, a new PC should fix most of the problems. I am a person that doesn’t easily throw old stuff away before they’re really broken, sooo I’m not sure when that’s going to happen. :P

It’s good to see that the forums seem to do very well and we have lots of activity here! I’m really hoping to jump along some time in the future. :)

If you have any paid cloud storage (DropBox, etc), consider a move to OneDrive. OneDrive subscription also comes with an MS Office licence, at a similar (or perhaps even lower) price as other providers.

Otherwise, consider if LibreOffice might be sufficient for you.

Either of these may make the Office licence less of a concern.

Consider reformatting your current PC if you haven't already. It still won't make it a new PC, but it can help clear things out.

Ultimately though, at 6 years old, I think I'd be replacing for sure, especially if it wasn't very high-end.

I hope you can get well and get a new PC soon; we miss you Akseli! :)

Are you trying to use Discord through a browser? Because I've been using the app (not through a browser) for years now and have never had it ask for a capcha.
Or perhaps it has to do with not staying logged in. I'm not even sure of this but I'm guessing that either the app doesn't require log it or I have it set to permanently being logged in because I never log in to discord.

I will be at my hometown starting from tomorrow on until somewhere next week.

So less activity during this timeframe as I don't have access to discord and don't have the time to playtest/edit stuff. I will visit the forum when I get to it though.

I can just quote myself here again. ;P

My birthday is this Sunday and I plan to visit my hometown as a result. :)

I've been taking a bit of a break from Lemmings recently, been getting into some of my other hobbies and pursuits, as well as (attempting to) get a few real-life things back on track. Hope to be a bit more active over the coming weeks, great to see you all again!

I'M ALIVE. I was on here as DumbLem back in the early 2000s, then I disappeared for a couple years, and I think the last time I was on here was in 2010. In 2010 I renamed myself to Xan Kriegor, made a couple comments here and there, and a long comment in random story, then promptly vanished off the face of the Earth again. I'm hoping to stick around a little bit longer this time, maybe try to get Lemmini running and see what that's all about, and maybe make/finish a couple Lix levels that I started back in 2016!

Welcome back after so long, Liebatron! Looks like you were able to regain access to your original account, after all. Awesome!

Lemmini has not been relevant for a long time now. The vast majority of custom content is on NeoLemmix these days, and almost all the rest is Lix. SuperLemmini gets very occasional content - most of it conversions from other engines rather than original content. (There's been a big spike in conversions lately, but this is more a one-off wave and in general SL content comes quite slowly.)

NeoLemmix is likely to get a new update released tomorrow - so if you're in no rush, you may as well wait until that comes out before setting it up. (EDIT: Said update is now released.)

That aside - Lemmings 2, Lemmings 3 and Lemmings 3D are all possible to edit now; that may be news to you. I'm not too familiar with L2 and L3 editing myself though, but ask around and someone will be able to help.

As always, I am at my hometown for christmas, so less activity during that timeframe and further contest entries will be verified when I'm back again. :)

I'm taking some time out from this community due to recent events and personal matters.

I'm sorry it's very sudden but the Jackbox session this Sunday is also cancelled. The way I'm feeling at the moment I just cannot go through with it.

I am at my hometown for the duration of ~7 days, so less activity during that timeframe and there can be a slight delay for the next few cotest voting rounds. :)

Don't forget there's a Jackbox session on 19th September ;)

I'll be away on vacation the whole week starting Sat. 18. Not sure exactly when I'll be back. I might chat a little bit on discord but no Lemmings/gaming activity. Unless I can get Gartic phone to work on my phone. [Gartic phone... on my phone...]

I still exist.

I broke out Lemmings Revolution again recently.  I'm pleased to find that I'm much better at it now than I was 15ish years ago.

Now just to solve the last row of levels.

Continuing onward to existence.

I am at my hometown for the time from the 2.9 until roughly the 6.9, so less activity during that timeframe.

So, in case anyone is wondering what's going on with Lemmings: Hall of Fame, I'm currently in the process of moving house, but more in a "piece-by-piece" manner that will likely take until March.
@kaywhyn, I haven't forgotten about your replays. ;) I'm just mainly spending my weekends setting up furniture at the moment.
I'll try to watch them all soon, but it will take a while until I have the time to edit the levels of the final two ranks accordingly.

Lemmings: Hall of Fame will still happen, but most likely later this year. I was shooting for a release at the beginning of the year; but then, I found the new apartment in autumn, and have only had access to it since once week before Christmas. March is when the living-room furniture arrives, so at that point it will be a lot more hospitable.

Thanks for the update, @Strato! Indeed, I was going to post in the LHoF development topic to see what was going on with this, as it's been a few months since your last PM to me, but I figured you simply have been really busy lately, and it sounds exactly you've been tied up with getting yourself situated in your new place. As I always tell people, do what you need to do. There's absolutely no rush, but I will definitely look forward to the next LHoF update and doing some more resolving of patched up levels before the pack's release whenever it drops! :) Again, no hurry at all ;) There's always other packs to keep myself busy, though I've been trying to cut back on the time I spend with Lemmings, as well as LPing in general. I'm finding that I don't have the energy like I used to to do LPs these days, which largely explains the recent huge lapses between LPs before I do the next one. It's really that I'm looking out for myself more than anything, and if I need to take these extensive breaks from LPing to manage my overall health, so be it. When you're in your 30s like I am, you'll find how quickly things change from the time you were in your 20s.

Anyway, happy to hear from you and that you're doing well and again I will look forward to the next LHoF update whenever it drops!
