Title: Walkthroughs
Post by: Luis on May 30, 2009, 04:34:10 AM
Did you ever used a walkthrough to beat Lemmings? I did in some of the hard levels that I was stuck in the PSP one. I felt guilty in the end that I wish I can erase my memory on the levels so I can try to beat them without checking the internet for help. The main reason I used a walkthrough was because I was eager to finish the game so I can use the level editor. The editor was addictive.

The only level I can definitely remember using a walkthrough for was Highland level 4 in Lemmings 2 (the one where you build a bridge out of rocks). I never used one for the first Lemmings games.

I've seen a few walkthroughs on some users (especially ISteve's) levelpacks as well as the original. Is it possible that anyone else can bother to do a walkthrough for one of their levelpacks?

I did one for Lemmings Plus and some of the earlier Ultimate Challenge packs, not sure if I ever made them for LP2 and LP3 (if I did, they certianly weren't included with the packs themself).

The new DOS Lemmings Plus, I'm making sure to write one for each level as I make it, and on top of that, making replays for the harder ones as well. This way, if I ever get accused of a level being impossible (as I'm sure will happen with a couple of them), I can throw out a replay on the spot and be like "TAKE THAT!".

As for using them... I never found the intended solution to the final level of 3D Lemmings without one, but apart from that, nope - and even that level, I did manage to solve with a backroute.

I did have to get a friend to show me how to beat 21 Mayhem, but that was all.

I am making walkthroughs for my levels, but I can't make levels nearly as hard as some of you guys so I'm sure they won't be necessary :P

I didn't use a walkthrough on the Master System version because I didn't have access to one (although I did sometimes have a think-through with my family and friends to come up with ideas). I don't remember consulting a walkthrough on the other Lemmings games, but I can't shake the feeling that I may have done. I really can't remember.

Nice work, not sure if you liked it or not. :-\ Do you remember Fun level 9? This level is where you have to use a backroute to solve it (Quite interesting by the fact the intended solution is impossible without builders :))

So it sounds like you did solve Space 8 ("Odyssey", AKA your most hated level from Lemmings 2) by yourself.  It wasn't clear that's the case when you mentioned it in the "Top 5/Bottom 5" thread.

You don't have to use a backroute to solve Fun 9. The building over the tree is completely intended - and the level title even hints at this. It's not a backroute.

Level 57 on 3D Lemmings, T minus 5 and counting, is a strange one. Every guide I have seen uses the backroute, which is one well-timed bomber. It's easy to see why they'd offer that solution, but it makes me wish that level had more lemmings.

I didn't even know there WAS any other solution, which is why I never deemed it a backroute. o_O

There is indeed a second solution. It uses up most of, if not all, the skills available. I'll have to dig it up and remember what that solution was. I haven't played that game in a while.

I had a feeling this would come up again.

No, I didn't solve this level, but I'm gonna claim on a technicality that I didn't use a walkthrough to solve it either. When I got as far as I could with this game, I left it and never came back to it. (And still haven't.) In the meantime, I got curious and looked up this level on TLE - where it says to use the chain to go through the wall.  >:(

The intended solution to Taxing 57 in 3D Lemmings is as follows:

1.  Make a lemming bomb on the green blocks.  He should explode on the last one, taking out a piece of the single green block over his head.

2.  Send a climber up the gray structure toward the rocket ship.  He will hit a deflector block and drop back down, and he will eventually hit the green block that the bomber took a piece out of.  Because the bottom of the block is gone, the climber will turn around instead of climbing up and over it.

3.  The climber will work his way around the level until he climbs up a blue wall.  When he reaches the top, make him mine down.  This will free the rest of the crowd.

4.  Bash through the final obstacle to reach the exit.

The reason the backroute exists because the miner in step 3 takes out the deflector block (the same one you bomb through in the backroute).  The backroute exists so that the lemmings who are turned the wrong way are still able to reach the exit.  (Having these lemmings rejoin the crowd instead of going straight to the exit would have prevented this backroute.)

It's also worth mentioning that I've saved 40/40 on this level by using a well-timed basher instead of a bomber.

That was also the solution I came up with, but it appears you beat me to it. :P

o_O NICE.

I didn't even know 100% was possible on any level that didn't require it, apart from some of the training ones and Lemmtris.

100% is also possible in "Castle Peralus" in case you're interested.  In my opinion it is more straightforward than the intended solution to that level.
