Hi everyone, I enjoyed lemmings as a child very much and recently found a way to download it to Windows 11. I have been playing it a lot over the last few days and have got through most of the levels fine. However I am completely stuck on Taxing 26 ('Triple Trouble'). I have watched lots of tutorials on youtube on how to do it, but I can't solve it at all despite trying loads of different methods. The highest number of lemmings I've managed to save is 66% a few times. Would anyone be able to give me any suggestions as it's driving me absolutely insane :)
edit: Added Win95 to the topic title for clarification
Hi @hrb264, welcome to the Forums! Indeed, why Taxing 26 isn't in the Mayhem rank is anyone's guess. What port are you playing the game on? Dos? Genesis/Megadrive? Win95? etc.

I downloaded it from 'myabandonware'. It's the Windows 95 version i think
Any screenshots/pics of your game while you're in a level you can attach?

Yeah, the one on MyAbandonware is Winlemm '95. The physics are notoriously wonky on that version, although it is just about playable.
Which part of the level are you stuck on, exactly?

Basically, all of it. My reaction times aren't very good even though I'm pausing and unpausing it constantly. I always seem to be left with the wrong number of builders and yeah the cursor seems very imprecise when I click on a lemming and it often gets the wrong one. I'll see if I can get some screenshots.

Unfortunately I can't see an option in the post to add an attachment, do I need to upload it and share it as a link?

That's one way to do it. At the bottom after you click "reply," it says "click or drag files here to attach them." You should be able to put screenshots after saving the images/print screen. At the top of the image in the attachments section, there's an arrow next to the red x you can click on to insert and attach it to the post.

oops I see it now. Thanks very much!! Basically i always seem to end up with this sort of scenario. :(
Ah, it is indeed the Win95 version. I grew up with and played the Dos version, and so I wouldn't know as much about the physics differences on the Win95 version. On some ports, you only get 10 builders, like on Dos, whereas on others you get 12 builders. I believe I've always used the builders only for the bottom entrances. Also, I use the extra height on the structures in order to connect to the floating platform in the middle more easily. That should help a lot here. In other words, you just need to dig with the top entrance to rescue them and then you can simply ignore it for the rest of the level afterwards.
Yeah i keep running out even with 12 builders and the lemming keeps hitting its head on the left and I end up using up all my builders because of this :(
Ah, sounds like the builder checks are far less forgiving on the Win95 port than on others. I'll leave it to WillLem and anyone else who has played the Win95 version to help you out here then.
Like I keep ending up with a situation like these lol
Here's a video solution (https://youtu.be/fuUz-F-lGik), saving the required 98% in Winlemm (and with 4 Builders to spare!).
The main keys to executing the 98% solution are:
Spoiler
1) Have the left-side worker lemming start building as soon as they have finished climbing to the top of the steel block. Spam-click this lemming as they're climbing up if you have to!
2) Make use of Blockers at the top of the level, and rescue them later by removing the terrain from under their feet. This should be relatively straightfoward as there are plenty of destruction skills, and you can use the left/right arrow keys to make sure you're selecting lemmings facing the correct direction.
And, it's also possible to save 100%:
100% solution
With more precise timing of the Miner & Builder on the left-hand side of the exit, it's possible to have the Miner walk out onto the Builder's completed bridge. This takes a lot of practice on Lemmings ports without player assists (such as Winlemm).
Here's a pause-free playthrough of a 100% solution on an Amiga emulator (https://youtu.be/iowHOfG6IgY?si=l5oRb54wRyf3RbE1), complete with a full strategy breakdown. The Amiga physics are more or less the same as Winlemm, but the collision checks can be a bit more forgiving.
Best of luck with it! You've almost made it to the Mayhem levels, keep up the good work!
Ok, I took a look and tried it myself and it didn't give me as much problems as I thought it would. Here's a screenshot of my solution and how I used 10 of the builders.

oh cool, how did you manage to do it without climbers?

If you look at the screenshot, I had a Lemming step up and dug down the structures at the far side first before building with the bottom entrances. That's what I meant by using them to gain a bit of extra height ;)

Here's kaywhyn's solution in action (https://youtu.be/AApA0bAD6tc) on WinLemm. The key to the digger assignments is to use the arrow keys to make sure the lemming is facing the correct direction. From there, the solution is reasonably straightforward, and saves 100% which is always good :)

Thanks. How do you use the arrow keys? The version I have seems super imprecise. I never knew you could choose the exact lemming :)

So I've tried the suggestion and I've managed to save 1 more lemming so I'm on 67% lol ... I thought I had got it, but the builder doesn't quite go high enough in the left entrance to be able to build onto the bridge :(

When you hover over a group of lemmings with the cursor, you can use the left and right arrow keys to select a lemming facing in that direction. Great for isolating a left/right-facing lemming from within a crowd, but also useful for any situation when you need to make sure that the lemming you assign a skill to is facing a certain way.

I've just seen that you all create custom levels? Can I run these on Windows Lemmings or do I have to install another programme for it? :)
While technically it is possible to play (older) custom levels in WinLemm, I'd recommend installing NeoLemmix and/or Lix. More details in this post: https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=1618.0
Most modern content is designed for NeoLemmix and Lix. WinLemm uses the .lvl format from the original game, which limits it to the feature set from the original game. You can find a lot of level packs compatible with the original game in the Lemmings level database: https://lldb.camanis.net/ But if you want to play those, you might as well just play them directly in the player that's part of the level database :) Otherwise, you have to download the packs, and either play them in Lemmix, or unpack the .dat files into .lvl and overwrite some original levels in WinLemm (which then has different physics so some level may not be solvable).

thanks very much, some of the level ideas look very cool and not something that you can get in the original game so I'm going to download it as soon as I've done 'oh no'! :)

NeoLemmix and Lix are indeed the most-used custom engines on this Forum. However, the topic geoo points to is a little bit outdated. I'd recommend giving this post (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?msg=48732) a look as well.
Also, NeoLemmix is no longer in development. NeoLemmix CE (Community Edition) (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?board=45.0) continues where NeoLemmix 12.14 left off, adding only UI improvments and bugfixes (the internal game remains exactly the same, so all NeoLemmix packs will be playable in CE).

Thanks so much. I downloaded Neolemmix yesterday but the lemmings seem to walk incredibly fast and my reflexes aren't great at the best of times, is there a setting i can change so they walk slower?

Which version of NeoLemmix have you downloaded? If you open it and take a look at the main menu screen, the version number is printed at the bottom just above the yellow scroller.
The lemmings shouldn't be walking too fast, this may be a bug. If you have screen recording software installed I'd be interested to see how fast the game is running on your system.
There is a hotkey for "slow motion" which slows the entire game down considerably, but you shouldn't have to use this for normal play. To use the hotkey, press F3 from the main menu (or click the yellow title card with the cogs) to access settings. From there, choose "Configure Hotkeys". You'll then be able to assign any key you wish to slow motion. From a quick check, I'm about 80% sure that there isn't a default, so configuring your own will be necessary if you do want to use it. But again, it shouldn't be necessary for just playing the game normally. Further investigation is needed!

Thanks very much, yeah it seemed massively faster than what I was used to when I used it last night, whereas I'm finding retrolemmini quite easy to use. It probably is a bug, I'm trying to attach the screen recording now but it seems a really big file. You might be able to see some of it though?
@hrb264I checked your NL video and everything seems fine there to me, including the speed. Mine goes at about that speed as well, and I'm certain that goes the same for pretty much everyone else who uses NL, unless it's a weak machine and/or the user has a lot of open applications while playing NL and other settings in-game enabled, such as the high quality mini-map, though the performance hit with this particular setting on will especially be notable on really huge/tall levels, and even moreso if there are also a lot of animated objects in the level. Then even on modern machines it will tend to be very laggy. In contrast, at least FF in NL works properly, not like in the Windows version where the level is practically over in about a second once you engage it.

yes, i totally agree with you. Yeah fast forward is completely unusable on windows lemmings.
It's a nice interface (although i never played the dos version as a kid) , and it could have been just a glitch last night as it does seem better when i loaded it up just now. However, I'm finding retrolemmini a lot more easy to use so far and closer to how i remember lemmings as a kid, but i want to get used to neolemmix as well when i have time. Thanks for all your help.
@WillLem, I just finished Havoc Look before you leap in RetroLemmini, I don't think I could have done it in Windows Lemmings :D I'm really enjoying the level packs too.
