Title: Holiday Lemmings 2024
Post by: Mobiethian on December 01, 2024, 09:20:06 PM
Let's go! Holiday Lemmings 2024 is finally here! A 30 year anniversary NeoLemmix level pack in celebration of Holiday Lemmings 1994. This is a level pack that has been in development since summertime! Featuring 50 exciting, brand new levels, 25 of them per rank. The two ranks are: Night and Daytime. Meaning that Night is before Christmas (Christmas Eve) and Daytime is Christmas Day, and it goes on through until nighttime appears again with a boom! Actually, the ranks are interchangeable. They can be done in 'any' order of your choosing. The difficulty ranges! Be prepared for a roller-coaster ride! The level pack has been developed as a collaboration project by myself and Armani with the assistance of some wonderful people, credited below. It was an excellent experience!

I'd like to thank the following helpers for lending their time to pre-test the level pack and/or providing ideas, as well as assisting us while development was ongoing: kaywhyn, kevinmichael, Ritty, and Deedlebug. Most importantly, thank you for playing! It's hard to believe that when this level pack began, I was sitting in the air conditioning trying to cool down from the extreme heat. Now there is snow on the ground - just in time for release!

Suggestion, maybe give players a choice to download the DOS sounds separately rather than bundle it into the download.
I've just had to restore all of my sounds to the default sounds as well as my custom success and failure jingles after the download overwritten all of the sound files with the DOS sounds and default NL sounds.  :forehead:

Eeeek! :lem-mindblown: Oh, Flopsy, I am terribly sorry. :'(  See, what it is.. I prefer the DOS sounds, because that's what I've grown up with, DOS, and stuck with through my Lemmings journey. I certainly hope that you didn't have an entirely difficult time restoring everything. Shall I update the download then? Minus the "sounds" folder?

In all honesty, I didn't know it would do that. Sorry again, my bad. :-[

I went ahead and updated it anyway without the sounds. Thanks for the suggestion! I wasn't aware of that issue. :)

I had gotten a report today from a new player that he couldn't get through a lot of the levels in the pack. Including levels that I have made, strangely. :forehead: So now I'd like to leave it up to the community to help us arrange a new level order, from easiest to toughest.

This would allow new players to at least complete a handful of levels and perhaps learn how to do the tougher ones that way. And this would create some community involvement. Feedback? :excited:

Christmas is just a week away! (as of today in my part of the world) And we hope that you're enjoying the level pack! There hasn't been any feedback lately, which is okay. So I am guessing that things are going smoothly, there haven't been anymore issues reported as well, which makes us happy. :)  And happy for you also!

If anyone can review the level pack in the near future, that would be totally appreciated! Even something short is good. I am also wanting to know if there are any ways to improve the level pack for all players.

kaywhyn is going to do an LP session on this eventually, but I can provide replays of levels by Armani if you're having trouble with solving any of them.

Everything being said, have a nice Christmas, folks!

Just noticing here:

I think by accident you also put Lemmings_Redux and the NeoLemmix_Introduction pack in your Download.
Also the music folder seems to have quite a few tracks from the standard music rotation which the download also does not need.

I appreciate the information and I have taken care of it now. Always appreciated, otherwise I wouldn't have known this at all.

Kind of new to NeoLemmix, and currently playing this pack. I could reach Nighttime last level the "The Bare Necessities", not without sweating at lot on some levels like Claustrophobia 2, All I want For Christmas Is... and more.

Just wondering : how hard the hardest levels of this pack are supposed to be, compared to other packs around here ? Asking because those were very tough to me, wondering if this can get really harder next ?

Hello Guigui! Thank you for playing our level pack, we really appreciate it. Well, the Daytime levels are supposed to be the toughest ones, but it's been said before that they are kind of less difficult. So, I figured they could be done in any order. I wish you luck, however.  If you need to find solution help, I have videos on my channel in the "How To Solve It" category for this pack. https://www.youtube.com/@BradleyJ83

It's common here for levels to be rather difficult, so some practice may be great. I still can't solve harder levels myself, but I really am trying. Keep on trying as well, I know you can do it.

Thanks for the reply Mobiethian.

The actual pattern I found for the difficulty in your Holiday Lemmings 2024 pack is rather simple :
* created by Mobiethian : fair difficulty, have fun. I loved the living-room themed levels, with the trap-cat :D
* created by Armani : get prepared for brain burning.

Still stuck at "The Bear Necessities" at the end of Nighttime. No matter how hard I turn it around to contain the crowd and dig through those 3 obstacles at the end, I always end up missing a single skill to complete. Hence the name maybe ? Just noticed the play on a word "bear/bare", maybe something to do with the bears at the beginning ? Still searching...

You're very welcome! :) So I watched the playthrough video of The Bear Necessities and it appears that it's a matter of digging down to clear the terrain. The rest of the crowd will be brought over section by section until a miner is used at the end of it to precisely allow a left diagonal path to the exit. As for the title, it may have something to do with the limited skill set? I'm not entirely sure.

I'm not an expert solver and usually struggle with Armani's clever levels. :forehead: However, I agree with you, my levels are fairly easy to do. This is because I'm still learning how to make difficult levels. Thanks for understanding this. heh My next level pack, so far, seems to be really difficult. But I hope that I was helpful enough, even though I don't think I have given enough solving tips, but I tried.

It's nice to have you here on the forums! Feel free to PM me anytime if you need anything. And I'm often available on the Lemmings Forums Discord.  ;)

Ok got it. Did a little cheating since I watched your video, up to the point where it became different from all my previous attempts.
Turns out this "block and release the crowd with 2 diggers" occured to me, but I did not know how to do it since the digger needed to release also has to climb, and that climber I had always him stuck at the end part. That is some serious time and crowd management here, congrats to Armani for the design and kaywhyn for solving it.

Ok so, now on to Daytime...

Nice! No problem there. Sometimes we gotta see the answers in the back of the book, so to speak. That's why the videos are there.

Good luck with Daytime, the first level requires thought. However, the order of the levels as far as difficulty goes, it's not exactly from easy to hard. Especially with my levels in there. ;)

Oh come on, now bring Armani here ! Someone needs to fix his twisted brain.

Daytime lvl 1 took me ages to figure : survival of the fittest, or rather, suicidal or the least fit.

Then daytime lvl 2 starts and it takes me more than 5 minutes to actually understand what I have to do. Possibilities are endless here, and that righmost neutral is facing the wrong direction ?!? Twisted, twisted, twisted. Need a one week break from the game to even think about this level again.

(talking loud for sure, but I actually like doing this to me ; tough will have to aknowledge that I'm not at that solving level yet)

You'll get there, I am confident. Armani is really clever with his levels. ;) ha

NEWS! A style that I was using was removed from the database, so I had to remove those items from the level, specifically, Bank Holiday Daytime Level 7. Downloading the pack again will fix this. Or, if you've made progress, let me know and I will send the updated level file itself to you. Sorry about this, everyone!

Very slowly progressing through daytime.

Level 6 Skating On Thin Ice is another masterpiece by Armani. Glad I could clear it, this half turn with dig and platform is hellish.

I have an alternate route than the one shown on your "How to solve it" videos. Using that little gap at the top of the left one-way pillar seemed mandatory to me :

Awesomeness! I like your solving method there.

For all players, now you can download the level file itself to the broken level - Daytime 7 to fix it and play!  Considering the broken pieces that had occurred recently. Enjoy! :) Sorry for any inconvenience.

Now how green is that check ?

Considering I'm quite new to NeoLemmix, this was a really good, and hard, trip there to my first pack of custom levels (not counting Lemmings Redux).

Those tough levels from Armani, I sometimes had to resort to the "How to solve it" videos : play the level for about one hour, get stuck, watch the video until a point it shows something I did not try yet, then usually I can figure the rest.

Hardest levels in that regards imo :
All I want for Christmas is
The Bear Necessities
Sky Shield
Watch Your Step
Warm Cosy Basement
WHere Angels Dwell

Curious to know if more veterans players than me tried this pack and what their toughts are on the general difficulty of those levels. Just to give me an idea of what to expect from a next custom levels pack.

I'd say if you want to sort the level by difficulty, just put all Mobiethian's level in one rank, and the Armani ones in the others !

Thanks again for creating the pack.

Perfect! Congrats for solving all levels in Holiday Lemmings 2024, Guigui! You're welcome for the level pack and thank you for playing as well as for the review. We do appreciate that. I can't speak for Armani, but I am pretty sure he appreciates it.

I'm still new to things with 'tough level' making and still learning. ;) My next level pack will indeed be a challenge, it is really tough so far. ;)

I like your sorting idea there, it can be done if the players knew the authors of the levels first. Hope to be in touch sometime regarding my next level pack due to be revealed sometime around the holidays or after. There's no set release date this time.

@Guigui
Thank you very much for playing our holiday pack! I hope you enjoyed it
I think the overall difficulty of this pack is slightly above the average.
There are many easier packs in the NL level pack board and also there're quite a lot of harder ones too.
If you have hard time finding packs with suitable difficulties, you can ask the forum and people will gladly recommend some packs with your desirable difficulty :D

Thank you for your input Armani. Now your name is definitely associated with tough levels for me.

I could for sure use some recommendations for packs with different levels of difficulty :

* easy and fun : playable for my 10ish years old kids
* moderate difficulty : need to think, but can figure out the solution in a matter of minutes.
* harder : where I begin to struggle, like this Holiday Lemmings 2024.
* too hard for me yet : where I wont find the solution without hints, frustrating.

Lemmings Plus Omega
Lemmings Plus VI
Sublems
Blizzard of Lemm

Lemmings Plus III
Lemmings Plus IV
Lemmings Plus V
Lemmings Plus VII

The user who sent me the list hasn't solved all of these packs, while I have played and solved all of the packs listed except for FM2024 (haven't started that one yet), but yea, I think this list is quite accurate! [/list]

That's a rather nicely assembled list, I must say. I just want to have the chance to say that I'm working very hard to make my next level pack Oh Wow! More New Worlds as difficult as I can make it. I've been reading reviews and listening to everyone regarding my level packs/levels featured in packs, etc. that they are just way too easy. I'm hoping to change that.

I've been watching playthrough videos, replaying the old Lemmings games, and reading topics/posts regarding the toughest level packs out there. Not that I want to make it too difficult for easy level pack players, but I want to clear my name once and for all of being an easy level maker with all of my work. I hope that everyone really enjoys Holiday Lemmings 2024 into the future, but without Armani, this one would be far too easy to complete like the others. I really appreciate him and his hard work.

Many thanks for the list kaywhyn, definitely a great help to swin in the ocean of levels packs. I must say I'm a bit overwhelmed by NL stuff that I just discovered about a month ago, so much to do with users-created content ! So this list is a nice guide.

Also Mobiethian do not worry about making not-hard-as-hell levels, we love them too !
Actually I downloaded all the packs categorized "easy, my 10yo kids can play it", often need to relax and save Lemmings without torturing my head for a millenia.

I certainly admire the easy levels and won't attempt the hard ones. I get so frustrated - even with some of the easy ones. I think laying back with some levels is perfect.

Thank you, kind gentlemen, for weighing in on what I've said earlier. And the kind words! The thing is, and I'm being completely honest here, I can't solve harder levels at all. And I'm not alone here. I've even showed levels off of mine to friends around here locally and they don't have the slightest idea how to solve them at all. :(  Even some having experience with the original Lemmings game. This is why I made the YouTube playthroughs and added IchoTolot's to my channel playlist as well. I appreciate that he did an LP on Lemmings New Worlds! Thank you, IchoTolot! 8-)

The thing is, it does sadden me sometimes when my levels are seemingly too easy compared to others. I see a lot of other levels in packs that I play and I can't solve any one of their levels, which is fine by me. They're nice to look at! I do try, however. The Level of the Year nominations are beautiful, however, mine are so simple compared to the whole thing and I cannot solve any of the other levels except for just one.
