Title: [NeoLemmix] DéjàLems (32 Levels) [Difficulty: Medium]
Post by: WillLem on November 03, 2021, 12:57:08 AM

Ever had the feeling you've been somewhere before...?

Download DéjàLems (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=5811.0;attach=18904)

DéjàLems features 32 levels that have already been solved! The goal here is for the lemmings to... solve them again!

Fun 1 - Just... Erm, Never Mind!

Fun 6 - Smile If You Love Deja Vu

Fun 8 - We All Fall Down

Featuring a modded style which allows Digger/Basher/Miner paths, Bomber craters and Builder bridges (not to mention pre-placed forgotten Blockers!) to be inserted into the levels, this pack asks the question: what if more lemmings came through the trap door after the level had already been completed, but with a different set of skills and level stats? Hopefully, you can find the answer! :lemcat:

As with most of my remix packs, the focus here is on exploring the concept, so these levels shouldn't be too difficult for most players. However, there are of course some challenges in here to keep the puzzle-fiends entertained ;P

So go ahead and enjoy playing through the levels that have already been played through the levels that have already been played through the levels that have already been played through the levels that have already been played through the levels that have already been played through... (vous avez eu l'idée!) :lemcat:

What's in the attachment:

:lemming: Level pack
:lemming: Full set of solution replays
:lemming: willlem_special style with custom tiles required for all of the levels
:lemming: Custom menu graphics
:lemming: Custom skill panel graphics
:lemming: Amiga Lemmings music

To install, simply unzip the folder directly to your NeoLemmix directory.

If this is what I think it is, then it's really clever :lemcat: Can't wait to try it out

Had a report from Silken that the style isn't working. Anyone else having this issue?

I can confirm that the style included with the original download is fully up-to-date.

Hi WillLem,

Great concept for another remix pack as usual! This is definitely on my to-play list, though it might not be for a while, but as usual I'll eventually get to it. I liked your Inverse Lemmings for its concept, and I'm liking the description of this remix pack as well ;) It's always nice revisiting the original levels from time to time and putting some kind of twist on it, like with the former rotating every level upside down 180 degrees (which can be simulated by playing with your laptop/machine upside down, if you fancy that instead), or with this pack where a solution path has already been carved out and now you need to find another solution to an already "solved" level.

However, I experience the exact same issue as Silken in that all of the levels are unplayable due to missing styles. In this case, it is saying that the background is missing due to a style called "proxima tile." I even tried your Discord Special zip and that didn't solve it at all. Fortunately, as I said that it'll be a while before I even get to this pack, it's not a big deal for me right now, but it would be nice that the levels are playable for when I eventually do.

Once again, nice concept for this level pack. I always like these creative twists you put to these original levels!

Ah, OK :forehead:

I thought I'd already fixed this for my copies of the original levels, but clearly not. It is now definitely done, so this should never be an issue in the future.

And of course, the DejaLems download (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=5811.0;attach=18904) has now been fixed :lemcat:

NOTE TO SELF: Add the Amiga tile to willlem_special, perhaps? Then, use an alias.nxmi to redirect any uses of the background in special to willlem_special for those who, for some reason, may not have the default special style. This may not be necessary, thinking about it.

This is a really clever concept for a pack & I enjoyed playing through the levels here ! It was nice to see the original levels with a new twist on them, and the difficulty throughout was approachable with a good variety of levels and puzzles.

I have attached my replays for the pack and included some level-by-level thoughts below:
Spoiler

Fun 1 - This is quite a funny way to introduce the concept of the pack
Fun 2 - I think this is one pixel off still needing floaters!
Fun 3 - Fun level that seems to have quite a few ways to solve it - I used the laserer
Fun 4 - I probably overcomplicated this one a bit, but did manage a save all solution
Fun 5 - The talisman on this is a very satisfying solution for a fun level
Fun 6 - The talisman here really does change how I would have otherwise solved this and was a good one to figure out.
Fun 7 - It is a nice detail that you need to make the digger staircase sort-of backwards in this one, as a lot of levels that use this trick have you send climbers up to free a crowd.
Fun 8 - The first of a recurring level in the pack - not too different from the original solution, but much like the original it gets harder...

Tricky 1 - Very much like fun 1
Tricky 2 - I managed to get a save 3 solution here, but I like that you get enough skills to try a save-more solution.
Tricky 3 - I think this level does a great job in showcasing how the new skills open up new solutions to old levels. It is a really nice touch that the pre-placed bridge catches the glider after the shimmier. This is probably my favourite of this rank.
Tricky 4 - The twist that they all spawn in a way so that they will climb up that pillar is a nice idea for this one.
Tricky 5 - I overlooked using the laserer at the end (rather than to get through the staircase) for a little bit at the start of this one.
Tricky 6 - I managed to get the talisman here with 98 saved, working out how to do the start was the tricky part of this puzzle for me.
Tricky 7 - I didn't use the builder pickup skills on this one, so maybe my solution here is a backroute?
Tricky 8 - ...there now isn't enough space to just assign the skills...

Taxing 1 - Working out how to save the builders for the end and also free the crowd was a really nice puzzle on this one!
Taxing 2 - I was able to get the talisman with a 1-of-each skill solution here. I think this is a bit easier than taxing 1, but it is still a good level.
Taxing 3 - This took me a while to work out how to place the skills and not have a lemming walk off one of the edges. My solution doesn't make use of the swimmer pre-assigned skill so maybe isn't quite intended?
Taxing 4 - This was fun to execute and watch back - it also teaches the trick for the next levels!
Taxing 5 - Using the trick from taxing 4 in a puzzle immediately after makes for a nice combo.
Taxing 6 - I did guess from the title there was an exit in the missing 'x' in exit, but did use clear physics to find the exact position of the trigger area.
Taxing 7 - Realsing that you need to place the platformer first, rather than after the pickup skill took me quite a while to spot! This is a nice puzzle!
Taxing 8 - ..there now really isn't much space to work with at all!

Mayhem 1 - Nice puzzle - I like that you need to work out how to keep a lemming behind at the start.
Mayhem 2 - Another nice one - I imagine there is probably a way to save more lemmings than I did on this one!
Mayhem 3 - This is quite an elegant puzzle, but perhaps a little easy compared to some of the other puzzles in mayhem
Mayhem 4 - Probably my favourite level in the pack. This is a great puzzle that makes really good use of the solution terrain and also uses a blocker in a clever way like the original puzzle.
Mayhem 5 - The main puzzle here is around placing the bomber correctly, I initially tried to send all the lemmings underneath on the bridges.
Mayhem 6 - I like that you do very much need to mind the step at the start and jump over the initial hole to turn around.
Mayhem 7 - This is a good open ended puzzle that makes nice use of the terrain - it is still a bit of a challenge even with a seemingly generous 4-of-everything skillset. I really like that the solution encourages use of the shimmier on what was otherwise a decorative part of the terrain.
Mayhem 8 - ...and now they are sliders! Though you do seem to have a fair bit of choice how you solve this one!

Currently playing this pack, having already cleared MiniLems.

I must say I found DéjàLem better and funnier than MiniLems. Love to see all those already solved levels, and which twisted things you put in them to make them total nonsense. Gives me a good laugh each time, then a good time to think how to correct the nonsense.

I almost cleared the whole DéjàVu pack, only two levels left where I have to use laserers correctly and cannot do it :
Taxing 3 : Perseverance DV. Cannot make the crowd half turn correctly in the mess of blocks on the right side...
Mayhem 4 : No added colours or lemmings. No idea how to get up there with a correct way. I guess one blocker somewhere freed by a walker later, and two laserers canceled at the right time with walkers. Though I cannot pull this off at the correct time and place.

As for creating levels myself, this sure sounds attractive. But I fear way much time consuming for me now, and I can not launch NLEditor on my Ubuntu laptop. Made a thread about it here, guess I'd rather ask on Linux specialized places :

The remaining levels fell, the lesson from them is : laserers alone suck, laserers+cancel is great.
This makes DéjàLems cleared with all talismans. I'm attaching my replays if anyone interested.

All in all a nice time revisiting those levels ; I particularly enjoy seeing those holes left by blockers that have been nuked after clearing the level. When you want to clear again with the same settings, those holes are certainly a nuisance !

For this, I'd recommend the Lemmings Plus Series (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=1922.0), although note that most of these packs get very challenging.

There are also many other custom packs that use the classic 8 skillset alongside new styles. I'll let others chime in here as I've played far fewer packs than some of our resident solvers!

Chiming in :)

@hrb264 Aside from the aforementioned Lemmings Plus series, of the custom level packs I've personally completed, I believe all of the following use only classic skills:

The Blizzard of Lemm by jkapp76
Deceit's Lemmings by deceit
DoveLems and FranLems by Dodochacalo
Droidlings by Johannes
GeoffLems by Geoffster
GigaLems by GigaLem
Insane Steve's World by Insane Steve
JW's Level Pack by JW
Lemmings Migration by Nessy
Lemmings Quartet by Apjjm
Lemmings Reunion by IchoTolot
Lemmings in Weirdyland by weirdybeardy
MazuLems by Martin Zurlinden
Nuked Lems and Ski Sloping Lemmings by grams88
PimoLems by Pieuw
Ron Stard's Rodents by Ron_Stard
Scotty's Lemmings Pack by Scotty
SubLems by Colorful Arty
The Krow Files by DireKrow
VampPrince Lemmings by AbirdVampPrince
Zemmings Complete by zanzidorf

You can find all of these to download here (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=7011.msg105355#msg105355) under 'List of all NeoLemmix Level Packs (for NeoLemmix V12)'. It tends to be the older packs that only use the classic skills and that is definitely true of many of the packs listed under 'For NeoLemmix V10' but you'll need to play those with an older version of NeoLemmix (or convert them to V12, which I've done for most of them, but the conversions aren't all publicly available). There may be some other packs I haven't yet managed to finish which also use only classic skills, but these are guaranteed to be very hard nuts ;) Even from the packs I listed, the difficulty of some of them is pretty high compared with OG Lemmings.

@hrb264

To expand on the Lemmings Plus series, only Lemmings Plus I, Lemmings Plus II, and Lemmings Plus III use classic 8 skills. The rest of the packs in the series use NL skills as well.

Other packs that use classic 8 skills that I haven't seen listed:

Cachapack and Dodopack, both by Dodochacalo
Lemmings Redux by Proxima and the Lemmings community
Lemmings Rundown by LemFan
Lemmings Stampede by BulletRide
NepsterLems by Nepster
Quest From Kieran by Kieran Millar
Revenge of the Lemmings v4.0 by various level designers of the Lemmings Community
Save One by Guigui
Lemmings Memories by kaywhyn

The last one hasn't been released yet and won't be for a very long time, as I'm still very far from making all of it, but I plan to use classic 8 skills only, so definitely fits the bill! :P More information on my upcoming level pack for NL here (alternatively, it's in my signature as well):

https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=6990.0 (https://www.lemmingsforums.net/index.php?topic=6990.0)

Also, the last four listed and LemFan's are packs in pretty recent times that use classic 8 skills only!

@JawaJuice

QuoteDoveLems

Almost. Maso 30 is the only level of the pack that has a NL skill, a glider. What is true is that DoveLems was originally for Lemmini, an engine that supports classic 8 skills only and therefore it is indeed a classic 8 skills pack. Maso 30 relied on a miner glitch that works only on Lemmini, and since NL eliminates all glitches, the level therefore had to be adapted in the latter in order to keep the spirit of the intended solution. The closest one can get in NL with that is substituting one of the miners for a glider.

Not a classic 8 skills pack. Only Volume 1 sticks to classic 8 skills. The rest of the pack after that uses NL skills as well. Also, please be mindful and write people's usernames correctly!

Heh, no worries - I was being a little bit facetious in pointing that out ;) You know what though? I've just realized that I only actually have Zemmings Volume I and just a couple of levels from the other volumes :XD: Looks like I have a 'new' pack to play!

Heh, JawaJuice being JawaJuice :D Not a misspelling like in your post, since I technically spelled it right. Just a mis-styling! :P Thinking about it, it's possible that I simply did so without thinking, when I wasn't really full awake. At the same time, I'm fairly confident I actually did hold Shift down for the second J as well, but apparently not. Or I might had let go too early. Guess I'll never know.

I think you'll enjoy the remaining content after Volume 1, especially the new Cloud set in Volume III! The difficulty isn't too high either, I think it's just right for your skill level :)

Ok, how about posting that in the Zemmings Complete topic next time! :P

Also one last thing as I forgot to bring it up the last time, but I found some more packs on your list that aren't classic 8 skills in NL. You'll want to do your research next time before chiming in! :P

QuoteInsane Steve's World by Insane Steve
PimoLems by Pieuw

For Insane Steve's World, while most of the levels come from his 10-level Dos packs that are available on the Lemmings Level Database (https://lldb.camanis.net/) and hence use only the classic 8 skills, if I'm not mistaken some of the levels originally come from Lix and maybe some from Cheapo and hence are recreations for the pack.

Like DoveLems, PimoLems was originally a level pack for Lemmini and hence is indeed a classic 8 skills pack on that engine. Unlike the former, however, there are several glitch levels that needed to be adapted to work in the NL conversion. As a result, there are a few levels that have the walker skill. This one should had came to my mind, especially as this and DoveLems were the first custom level packs I played on Lemmini, after MazuLems, though this one I played on Dos.

Hey, I was just trying to be helpful. I didn't have time to go through every single level of every pack; I just went through the packs I've completed to date, and noted the skills for all of the levels in a single rank, making the (admittedly flawed) assumption that other ranks would follow the same pattern. I don't have the time to conduct exhaustive research on every post I make :P I also can't guarantee I won't make the odd typo with peoples' user names or pack/level names in future either - everyone makes mistakes occasionally; I'm sure this forum is full of them, if you go through and scrutinize every post made since it began. With respect, this is a forum, not a class room. I guess I just won't chime in next time!

Quote from: JawaJuice on January 06, 2026, 12:53:51 PMHey, I was just trying to be helpful.

What can I say? I generally go for a perfectionist-like style. Just the way I roll! :P

Hello @WillLem,

I've solved all of the pack   My replays are attached :)

Enjoy! :P

General Feedback

DéjàLems is a level pack where the concept is taking some official L1 levels with pre-made basher, miner, and digger tunnels, and pre-placed bomber crater holes, builder bricks, or pre-placed blockers to represent the idea of solving the level as a possible solution the player might had found to the original levels. The challenge then is to solve them again, possibly with a completely different skillset. I really like this concept a lot  I had promised WillLem that I would get to this pack a few years back, only to not until now. Sorry about that! :-[

As these levels are just taken from L1, I'll just say which ones were my favorites and which ones gave me some problems. In the entire pack, Taxing 1 and Taxing 3 were the hardest for me. I can also see Mayhem 4 being challenging, so I would agree with @Guigui there with Taxing 3 and Mayhem 4.

My favorites of the pack: Tricky 2, Tricky 3, Tricky 4, Tricky 5, Tricky 7, Taxing 5, Taxing 7, Mayhem 1, Mayhem 3, Mayhem 4, Mayhem 6, and Mayhem 7

I also made another exception with this pack and went for all the talismans, as I anticipated this being a very quick LP, which indeed it was, save for Taxing 3 which took me the longest time before I figured it out. Here, my favorite ones were Fun 5 and Taxing 2.

Nice job with this pack and I think I'm going to try MiniLems next. Normally, I leave a big time window between packs by the same author, but again I'm going to make an exception here and do MiniLems immediately after, as again DéjàLems was really quick ;)
