Title: Spoiler Tags
Post by: namida on December 28, 2014, 01:06:56 PM
Hmm so, on the old board, we had a sticky topic in here about how to post spoilers. To be specific, it was [quote][color=#dee7ef](Spoiler goes here)[/color][/quote].

Now, on this new board, it's much simpler. To post a spoiler, use the following code:

[spoiler](Spoiler goes here)[/spoiler]

There's also a quick button for it when posting a message; it's the black and yellow one that somewhat resembles the "Radioactivity" warning sign.

Here is an example of how spoilers are displayed:

Spoiler
Hey, (don't) look at me, I'm a spoiler!

It's not before time that we have this!

I like that it's a hover one, and not a button one. I've not seen one before, but it's already clearly more convenient, at least on a desktop device. I'll have to see what it does on my phone.

Very neat idea for a spoiler. I was wondering what that interesting black and yellow sign was for. the hover idea is indeed the quickest one to access, and as Prob Lem said, more convenient.

I just had a thought. On the other hand if the user doesn't want to see the spoiler, then that hover idea might not be a good one. For example, if the user leaves the cursor in the middle and they decide to scroll down with the arrow keys they may accidentally see it.

I also think we could move/copy this to the Challenges Board too. I'm sure that will work well together.

You have a good point there. It doesn't seem there's any way it can be configured in an individual user's settings (only a global option for each theme), but I'll look more into this.

[23:45] <SimonN> the involuntary hovering is one thing, also the text below will jump up and down as the spoiler opens and closes, looks a little hillbilly
[23:45] <SimonN> and it doesn't allow inline spoilers, which might be wanted
[23:48] <namida42> id quite like to get it the same way GameFAQs has it, their spoiler tag is great
[00:05] <SimonN> OK, is an inlinable markup and sets bg of text to black, while black is also the text color
[00:05] <SimonN> yes, I think that is best, even if it doesn't look too sophisticated

As I mentioned on the chat, I'll look into doing something like that later; for now, I've made it so you actually have to click rather than just hover to show the spoiler text. Ever so slightly less convenient, but far more unlikely to accidentally reveal them (and probably more convenient for smartphone users).
