OK thanks about this, I suppose it's time to send a PM to Simon to update the OP. There are probably going to be a lot of nonsensical words here.

IS A BOOK INSTRUCTION MANUAL

Here's an incomplete prediction: AKHTBN iff it is one of the words in a particular (and probably humorous) sentence that the master has in mind.

Black:
AA B BOOK DIFFERENT ELEUSIS FUN GAME GOING HOW INSTRUCTION IS LDMSWD LEMMINGS LEMMIN LEMMINI LEMMUS LIX MAKE MANUAL MAYHEM OCLUDD OH OOKPIQQ PROXIMA RAMON TAXING THIS TO TRICKY ZUZ

Disproven guesses (AKHTBN iff):
the koan ends in ING --- disproving koan: JUGGERNAUT is White (<-- by Proxima on IRC)
the koan is a word of a particular sentence --- disproving koan: ZQVGSDKRTNA is White

Such a rule with only select koans would be very, very unfair. :P

Another guess for the rule:
AKHTBN iff it contains the dth letter from the alphabet, where d is the length of the koan. The only exception is DIFFERENT, where the rule is different ;P.

If this is incorrect, here some more koans:
DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD (30 D's)
GLEMMIN
EMMING
LEMING

Actually, you're correct, and I must apologize for that grave oversight. No idea how that happened  :scared:

No harm done and DIFFERENT was by far the best choice for your oversight ;). Good rule anyway.

New round of Zendo:
White: ELEUSIS
Black: ZENDO

Quite a few obvious guesses coming up considering the answers so far (although they're probably not gonna be the ones you're looking for) Here's two guesses I thought of:

AKHTBN iff the first and last letter (or just the last letter) appears more than once in the whole word, orr;
iff there is two or more of the same consonant or vowel in the word.

Otherwise, time to guess more koans:

ATHENS
CORONA
APOEL
NICOSIA
ELECTABLE
VALERIE
YAY

Unfortunaely both guesses are incorrect.
Disproving the first guess: BUDDHA is white.
Disproving the second guess: KOAN is white as well.

All the other koans are black:
ATHENS
CORONA
APOEL
NICOSIA
ELECTABLE
VALERIE
YAY

Hope you don't mind if someone bored at work jumps in...

To hazard a guess:

AKHTBN iff, when the letters it contains are arranged alphabetically, both the beginning and ending letter are vowels/

This game is meant exactly for those times...

AKHTBN iff, when the letters it contains are arranged alphabetically, both the beginning and ending letter are vowels/
Good guess, but MUSIC is another white koan.

AKHTBN iff; the letters in the koan go in order; up the alphabet, then down, then up etc.. or visa versa.
