Ok, given it a go. I was on v0.40 instead of v0.40.3, but unfortunately it's made no difference. I'll try compiling VGMPlay later, since, when I tried Audacious (which also supports VGMs and has an equivalent to WinAmp's Diskwriter), I just got a few seconds of silence and it wouldn't play or convert the files at all.
I do like a challenge - software weirdness is a bit of a rarity for me, these days.
