Non-Lemmings Gaming / Re: Simon runs Jazz Jackrabbit 1
« on: October 18, 2016, 04:38:26 PM »
Pretty swell. It was January 2011 when I last played Jazz Jackrabbit 1 (and therefore I can't remember the details very accurately), but I certainly have rated it as one of my favourite DOS games. Also, it appears that I have played a different version of JJ1 (1.3) that made, for example, Orbitus 2 pretty difficult to beat, although really memorable.

Still one solid looking, entertaining run with some neat tricks and informative commentary there, with some golden JJ1 music and nostalgy. :)

Contests / Re: Level of the Year: 2015 (Voting, Round 3)
« on: March 01, 2016, 09:38:36 PM »
Congratulations for the designers of the top levels!

I nominated Heroes of Lemkind to this voteoff, because it stood out for me the most from the entire Lemmings Reunion for its immense enjoyability factor. In my case it's mostly subjective why I like this level a lot, so I can't point out accurately objective details, except maybe digger placement that geoo mentioned. This was a memorable, awesome looking level and really satisfying to solve.

Parking Garage was the clear front runner all the time, and it won its every round until there were 5 levels left. In the semifinal it got eliminated, which was a huge surprise. I would've voted for it all the way.

The crucial point in my solution for The Face of Evil felt backroutish so I didn't vote for it. No Time for Flying Toast was an amazing level, even though it resembled a bit levels I had played before, like mobius' Five for Fighting.

Oh, like always, I would've liked to see a full score breakdown of the whole voteoff.

Everyone dislikes Hunt the Nessy and We All Fall Down.
I don't.

Also I'm not a huge fan of that kind statements where the writer itself thinks them to be objective standpoints. They are not.

Please people, use more precise expressions, so that outside readers won't get wrong assumptions. I've seen many these kinds of posts during these years and I always flinch a bit to them. This is something for all forum posters to take into account.
More correct form of this example would have been "Some people dislike Hunt the Nessy and We All Fall Down", though I would've accepted more informative though more error-prone "Most people dislike Hunt the Nessy and We All Fall Down", too. "Everyone dislikes..." is just overkill and wrong in every way.

There was the "Top 5, Bottom 5" topic years back that included this idea. I don't think the results will have changed enough to make re-running it interesting.
Agree with this, in my opinion there's no point in not posting to the old topics just because they're old, people tend to make too many new topics which leads to topic clutter, though this is a completely another issue, if many topics with few posts is better and easier to browse than few topics with many posts...

Congratulations Geoffster! :) Some of us knew your talent from GeoffLems already, and your winning level was another shiny gem.

Full results of the contest (well done namida now at least typing them up :) ):

First round: 10 people voted (up to 4 entries), 28 votes

Safe Descent: 2
Mind the gap!: 6
Cogopolis: 3
Parking Garage: 9
Las Ranas Hermanas: 3
The Adventures of Lemdiana Jones: 4
House on a Hill: 0
Altruism: 1

Second round: 9 people voted (up to 2 entries), 17 votes

Mind the gap!: 5
Cogopolis: 1
Parking Garage: 8
Las Ranas Hermanas: 1
The Adventures of Lemdiana Jones: 2

Final round: 10 people voted for one entry

Mind the gap!: 2
Parking Garage: 8

I loved Parking Garage, and I think it is one of the strongest contest levels we've seen. I think this kind of clear victory was last time seen in Lemmings Level Jam from two years ago, when Pieuw's incredible Utopia blew everyone out of the water. Another similarity with these levels is that the contest theme was pretty much the same in both levels' cases, having builders/constructive skills forbidden. :)

I played the latest versions of the levels and solved Safe Descent, Mind the Gap!, Parking Garage, The Adventures of Lemdiana Jones and House on a Hill, solutions attached in a folder.

NeoLemmix Levels / Re: [Fangames] Lemmings Plus Series

Hmm why to close the original levelpack topics? :P I'd guess that people that browse the forums would search discussion related to packs in their own topics in the easiest way.

Sorry for the late answers, but better than never. : )

Bumpy9: Mechanical Split - A lovely main trick, resembles a bit Genesis Mayhem 1 level.
Hm, I don't remember using this level's trick to solve Genesis Mayhem 1. Or did you mean the layout?
My Genesis Mayhem 1 solution:

Twisted15: Central Heating - A gem level, really good one! This gave me much trouble and I didn’t like the strict timing with the two guys on the top, that made the solution unrealistic before trying it out. Otherwise maybe my favourite level in this pack so far, and should be in Insane imo.

Do you mean at the start or at the end? The part at the start should time itself, while the part at the end isn't too hard if you make use of pausing. :P In fact, often (though certianly not always) I try to set my levels up so the timing works itself out, unless the timing itself is meant to be a major part of the puzzle.

Insane14: Artificially Sweetened - I always compared this level to “No Added Colours or Lemmings” from L1 because of the title and the similarity of the size, tricky solution, high difficulty, and the place in the mid-late last rating of the game. :P

That's pretty high praise, considering that Mayhem 20 was voted the best level from Orig! :) But I also think very highly of this level; not just once it became the last remaining unbeaten level, but in fact from the moment I created it. I'd even go as far as to say that it might be better than Panic Attack from LPII.

Sorry if I didn't express myself clearly enough, I meant exactly what I said with those five points when comparing these levels. I didn't say that I like 'Artificially Sweetened' as much as 'No Added Colours or Lemmings'. Insane14 has its little trick, but

For my taste Panic Attack is way above this level.

I have skipped commenting on some rounds yet again, oh well. Congratulations to NaOH for winning three last rounds in a row.

Q8 - I've always seen the flag of Qatar as brown-white. Now when I look at it again after your answers, I'm not that sure anymore. x_x

NaOH and Akseli, did you Google the grey hair as well? I had no idea, and thought nobody would choose the same.

Q9 - Yes, my answer was purely based on google searching. :P Barack Obama would have been my second answer.

Q10 - Crane: I really didn't come up with anything else than Snow White, even when trying to google search over and over again. :lem-mindblown:

As usual, IP address lookup allows members of Administrators and Global Moderators to determine the identity of QuizMaster

This was possible for global moderators in the previous forum, not in this forum anymore though. Namida reduced the power of moderators quite a lot, saying that moderators on the previous forum had almost admin-level powers. :P

Contests / Re: Official Level Design Contest #5 (Results)
« on: July 18, 2015, 02:36:11 PM »
The contest is over, here are the full results (qualifiers bolded):

Round 1, vote for (up to) 4 entries. Six people voted.

Lemming Mashed Potato Facility - 5
Tough Call - 4
Minefield - 1
Teleporters of doom - 0
Escape From Lemlab - 5
Electroshock - 5
Palmtree Pile-up v1.2 - 0

Round 2, vote for (up to) 2 entries. Five people voted.

Lemming Mashed Potato Facility - 0
Tough Call - 4
Escape From Lemlab - 3
Electroshock - 2

Round 3, vote for one entry. Five people voted.

Tough Call - 3
Escape From Lemlab - 2

This is what I wanted to see in every contest. Still no one has opinions on this? :P Clam agreed entirely with me in level voteoffs at least.

For example, we can see that Crane's Tough Call was placed 4th in the first round, but won the whole contest in the end. :) Congratulations Crane for another level design contest victory!

Levels for v10 or older / Re: Lemmings Plus IV (Updated)
« on: July 09, 2015, 11:18:20 PM »
I'll try to write comments of your pack in the topic soonish. It seems that people send you the solutions and comments mostly in private messages, and it probably would be nicer if something is put to the topic for everyone to read sometimes, too, so that most of the discussion wouldn't always be hidden from public. :P

At first I need to say that Clockwork and Wasteland tilesets are among Purple set your best ones, I like them a lot!

Smooth8: Post-2012 - The first level where I remember having troubles at first. The basic example of a level that has an easy but hidden solution!
Smooth11: Wow! Such Level! - Unlike Giga, I actually liked this level quite much, even the steel plates have doge in them! The tune gives me LPI feelings. :D
Smooth16: I'll Be Back... - A very good one-lemming level, many different skills that have to be placed in correct places in correct times.
Smooth20: Over The Edge - (from IRC on the 3rd of June):
[17:43:34]   <Akseli> namida42: song choice for Smooth 20
[17:43:41]   <Akseli> Big, fat thumbs up !
A really clever level, but difficult (harder than the final level for the second rating, for example) at least because:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Bumpy1: Chocblocked! - I need to give kudos for the title of this level… :P
Bumpy6: Chocoholics Anonymous - I had hard times with this one, still think it should be a lot later in the game.
Bumpy9: Mechanical Split - A lovely main trick, resembles a bit Genesis Mayhem 1 level.
Bumpy10: Zip-Zap Zone - I honestly don’t know if splat-pads and anti-splat-pads offered much for this pack. The builder-setup at the end was neat despite being simple in this level, though!
Bumpy11: Candy Mountain - My solution was pixel-precise, I think there is a more pleasant way to solve this one.
Bumpy12: Luck Of The Draw - Seems to get a filler-level feeling due to the text in the lower right corner. :D I didn’t at first realize the steel. A tougher level than those around it, in my opinion.
Bumpy16: Busted Bunker - This feels maybe the most filler level in the pack.
Bumpy17: Lem Your Lem Could Smell Like - A difficult one, I wonder what’s the intended solution, even finding my variant felt tricky.

Twisted1: Proceed With Caution - These kinds of path-creating levels with a lot of happening in a reasonably small area are always fun!
Twisted3: Minesweeper! - Oh yes, this! A really unique idea and it worked out so well, great job! :) The little amount of trial-and-error didn’t matter at all, most of the path could be derived from the numbers anyway!
Twisted6: The Brilliant Contraption - A great level!
Twisted7: Corrupt Shelter - There’s at least 3 levels in this set that uses this climber-goes-along-the-top path and they’re all Wasteland levels. :D Coincidence?
Twisted8: Oh No! More Ricks! - I got rick-rolled yet again! Can’t say that I have had enough of this, though. :D
Twisted10: Clocking In - This is delightful using of a glider, a good level!
Twisted12: Invasion Plan - This is the first time I noticed the moving space background, the Earth coming into sight was creepy when seeing the first time (with fast forward :D)! This level was a harder one.
Twisted15: Central Heating - A gem level, really good one! This gave me much trouble and I didn’t like the strict timing with the two guys on the top, that made the solution unrealistic before trying it out. Otherwise maybe my favourite level in this pack so far, and should be in Insane imo. :P
Twisted17: Climber's Edge - A nice ascending level, even more stuff going on in even tinier area than in Twisted1. :) Platformers fit nicely in this kind of level design!
Twisted18: Clockwork Maze - Should be in Insane rating, yeah.
Twisted20: Synchronized Lemming IN SPACE!! - Surprisingly much to try, but finding a working solution needed a bunch of effort.

Insane4: Ooh, Shiny! - I haven’t solved this one, but I found myself not liking the fact that I needed to guess the amount of lemmings that can be killed in this level due to having cloners.
Insane6: The Mystery Machine - A great level, just for my taste. :P
Insane7: Dopefish Lives! - As a Commander Keen fan I obviously loved this level and its tune choice. ;) Nice job with creating a puzzle with only terrain making skills!
Insane10: Comradical! - This was also a really enjoyable level with a great concept and multiple ways to approach with. I seem to like Clockwork levels the most. :P
Insane11: Tower of Confection - Definitely an Insane feeling level with four layers of operating the solution so that every one of them work.
Insane14: Artificially Sweetened - I always compared this level to “No Added Colours or Lemmings” from L1 because of the title and the similarity of the size, tricky solution, high difficulty, and the place in the mid-late last rating of the game. :P
Insane15: Heat Dispersal - This tricked me for a moment even though I realized the path immediately.
Insane17: If Only They Could Jump... - I haven’t solved this one, there’s like three places that I don’t understand at all how they could be possible, on the other hand this is the level I’ve tried the least because of that.
Insane18: Bomb Shelter - Felt really easy for its placement. Nice design, though!
Insane19: Overlocked Lemming - I haven’t solved this one, though this seems really cool level.
Insane20: Goodbye Galaxy - And yet another Commander Keen reference! I love the title and the design, these and the solution also fit amazingly for a final level of the pack, you’ve nailed final levels in every big pack you’ve created! :) (Speaking of that, I should try the last rating of LPIII some day again, I was pondering what’s the final level of that but realized then that I have not even seen it x_x)
Oh yeah and I loved the tune in this level also, these two tunes used in your pack’s boss levels are probably the ultimate boss tunes for me from gaming history anyway, so I had particularly great pleasure to play these levels.

By the way, I clicked wrong replays many times when watching my solutions, the window warning about wrong replays is an excellent thing.

I've been missing full score breakdowns in these contests. So far only placements have been revealed, and only for the levels that have made it to the final round. Vote results for each round have always left unrevealed, even though at least I would be very interested in seeing those. Here is an example of thorough results. The results should be revealed after the whole contest is over, and not in parts after every round, for example. This is pretty much the same issue I hoped to see in the voteoffs for the official games, now we don't know how levels succeeded between each other in their own rounds.

So, if no one finds revealing full results a bad idea, I would like to see this in the contests.

NeoLemmix Levels / Re: NeoLemmix release of Lemmings Reunion
« on: July 08, 2015, 12:39:19 PM »
I've played up to 4-21 now (110/150 solved) and just thought of dropping here a comment now. I'm pretty much being posivitely surprised all the time when proceeding with the pack, this has by far exceeded my already-high expectations and I can easily tell that this levelset is one of the very best ones there has ever existed.

You master puzzle creating, you master tricks and details of the gameplay, you master making levels look beautiful, you master using equally all the tilesets with their own strengths. No level has felt unfair or cheap so far (though that can change in the last rating? ;P), yet I have to agree DynaLem's and others' comments about the high difficulty of this pack.

I actually strongly recommend NeoLemmix version over the Lemmini version because of the high difficulty level. I wonder how Nepster got it close to the end without save states, those have been super important for me so far. :lem-mindblown:

IchoTolot, haven't you really created levels before starting this levelset last November? Either way, incredible work. If you want something to improve in level designing, quickly thought on my mind arises such a petite issue as level titles. "Trick And Trap Time!" and "Learning the Dark Mining Tricks" don't impress me that much. :P

My solutions for bsmith's, Crane's, Nepster's (v1 though, didn't look at the updates yet) and geoo's contest levels. I solved Giga's level as well, certainly in the same way as other people. IchoTolot's and Simon's levels can wait for now (they were the hardest for me), I'll leave for summer cottage for midsummer and I'll come back on Sunday evening. After seeing earlier contests I still keep smiling at these new contest levels, all you guys surprise me every time with these great levels! Really enjoyed them so far.
