Custom levels converted for LemmingsDS
« on: November 30, 2007, 10:18:45 AM »
I have been working to convert all the custom levels I had for Custlemm from this forum and the other well known ones over to LemmingsDS. I have taken these levels (after a lot of hunting and extracting) and put them altogether into a manageable pack for anyone to use with LemmingsDS or Custlemm. I know that a lot of the authors are regs here, and I hope I don't annoy anyone by releasing them altogether like this. If you want me to remove your levels, or have any suggestions or extra stuff to add in, please don't hesitate to let me know. Here is the readme to give you some of the gory details:

Lemmings Custom Levels Pack v0.1
StatMat (29/11/07)
================================

The levels contained in this pack were created by many authors for use with
Custlemm, a patched version of DOS Lemmings that supports custom levels. The
idea is to collect together all the disperate releases I can find into one
manageable pack. All the level files have been extracted from the original
DAT form in which they were released. This both allows for conversion to the
new LemmingsDS format and allows users to create their own packs for Custlemm
etc should they wish. The pack should also help to preserve this excellent
fan-made material.

As the the levels were designed for DOS, there are several slight differences
to Amiga levels. One most noticeable difference is the max number of lemmings
which is 80 in DOS, 100 on the Amiga. I have not changed any of the DOS
specific values to match the Amiga version, but that should not affect the
playability of the levels.

LemmingsDS Installation
=======================

It is very easy to install the levels for the excellent LemmingsDS to use.
Simply copy folders from the LDS directory in this pack to the
"LemmingDS/levels/1player/custom" folder on your flashcard. Bear in mind that
due to the way LemmingsDS currently loads and checks the level files on
startup, it is probably unwise to copy all of the folders to your card at
once due to the large delay in startup time.

Notes
=====

1. NOTEASY.lvl had an incorrect value for the Y-coord of Object 1, which has
been fixed. Additionally, whilst this level is attributed to "Mr. K", it was
actually created by his younger brother who is unknown at this time.

2. All of the levels in "Van Clan Lemmings (Tim Fox)" had non-standard style
IDs (two bytes at offset 0x001A). These have been fixed to match CustLemm as
follows:

VanClan  CustLemm
=======  ========
0x0000   0x0005
0x0001   0x0006
0x0002   0x0007
0x0003   0x0008
0x0004   0x0000
0x0005   0x0001
0x0006   0x0002
0x0007   0x0003
0x0008   0x0004
0x0009   0x0009

3. "JMGM02_6.lvl" does not have water along the full length of the level as it
would have in the DOS version. The LDS builder limits the number of liquid
objects to 16, whereas DOS seems to allow for 32. This should be investigated
further.

4. "JM17_8.lvl" referenced 33 terrain pieces with an index higher than 0x24.
The level was designed to use VGAGR4.DAT (crystal/ice set) which has valid
terrain pieces from 0x00 to 0x24. These invalid references have been removed
with Lemedit.

Custom levels
=============

Several levels in the original lemmings had custom background graphics which
were loaded from VGASPECx.DAT files. These were:

A Beast of a level
A BeastII of a level
What an AWESOME level
MENACING !!

The pack contains several remakes/tweaks of these original levels and thanks to
an application written by ccexplore, several levels that have completely unique
background images. Here is the list of the special levels:

People I'd like to thank
========================

Of course, it's only fair that I thank the individual authors of the levels
contained in this pack. I hope no-one will mind me releasing them altogether
like this.

Mathew Carr for creating LemmingsDS (and his conversion tool which makes this
pack possible) which got me started with Lemmings all over again.

rt, ccexplore and Mindless for their invaluable documentation of the Lemmings
data formats.

J. Gareth Moreton (Garjen) for his assistance in getting hold of many level
packs I didn't have, including his own.

laurens for giving me the original idea to convert all the Custlemm levels I
had into LDS format.

Contact
=======

I have tried to make sure that all levels function correctly. But if you spot
an issue, locate some other custom levels not currently included in the
pack, or even have some additional info that would help make the pack more
complete, you can contact me at:

<EMAIL REMOVED - SEE README.TXT IN PACK>

You can download the pack [HERE]

I must say thanks to all the original authors. I have greatly enjoyed playing all the extra levels.  ;)

Cool! But, did you remember to go through and fix up the steel areas? (and one ways, if they're busted too)
The DS convertor doesn't seem to get these right.

I didn't realise there was an issue with the steel/one way areas with the converter. I will look into it to see what we can do to remove any issues. Thanks for the heads-up, and thanks for the levels you produced.  :thumbsup:
