More distinguishable multiplayer colours
« on: September 20, 2017, 10:14:05 AM »
After watching yesterdays stream, It really started to bug me how similar the yellow and orange lix colours are in the multiplayer.
That's why I made a quick edit to the Lix palette, nothing too special. I'm sharing it here if someone else wants to try it out too. :lix-grin:

Thanks! Lix will read the above lixrecol.I.png when you place it in data/image/, overwriting the old file. Lixcolours.png is only for demonstration here.

Yeah, the similar colors are problematic, I should put it on the bugtracker. The main concerns were:
  • Yellow and orange are too similar, you're adressing that already.
  • Grey should be much lighter, ideally be borderline white.
  • Make the blue slightly darker.

agree completely with the need for better color distinguishing.

For me, I get the black/grey lixes confused a lot more than the orange/yellow ones.

To be very honest, I think there should be more than 8 colors

The more colors the more you will get collisions of similar colors, and with 8 you basically already got the rainbow plus black and white (well grey here).  How often do we expect 9+ player sessions?

Now, at least in theory we could potentially be more flexible with colors in the more common cases where there are far less than 8 players at the same time.  For example you could imagine allowing the player to tweak the exact shade of red or purple they want to get.

You have a point there.
If more different-ish colours are needed, which I doubt, I can only think of brown, pink and cyan.

I think I just quote myself from IRC here as I'm lazy :lix-wink::

[13:54:08]    <IchoTolot> having more tha 8 colors for 8 players would be nice actually
[13:54:23]    <IchoTolot> the best colors will shine through anyway then
[13:54:46]    <IchoTolot> grey beeing more white and orange beeing more orange looks better
[13:55:08]    <IchoTolot> the idea of a dark blue in addition of the light blue is good
[13:55:19]    <IchoTolot> dark blue really shines out from light blue
[13:55:43]    <IchoTolot> right now distinguishing orange from yellow can be hard

Wednesday the 20th of September 2017

[12:54:12]    <Akseli> Could there be more colours to choose than just 8?
[12:54:28]    <Akseli> I'd like to see dark blue in addition to that light blue
[12:54:43]    <Akseli> that shouldn't get mixed with anything else

[IchoTolot's IRC quotes]
[14:12:20]    <Akseli> exactly everything what Icho said
[14:12:45]    <Akseli> also would be more variety, just watched Icho's video of yesterday session and there was arguing over who uses which colour :D

Next Thursday

[14:46:05]    <Akseli> ^ brown, pink and dark blue are the colours I thought as well
[14:46:40]    <Akseli> white would stand out, too (now anyway when grey is what it is)

Orange, brown and pink are great in Raymanni's 12 colour palette. Cyan and blue are too similar in my eyes I think. As new colours, dark blue and dark green could probably be different enough from everything else, too.

The cyan in Raymini's picture looks a little too similar to the blue for me (maybe if the blue was a little darker instead), but the pink and brown seems to work okay.  So there could be a case for supporting a few more colors.

While Raymanni's blue and cyan colors look a bit too similar for my liking, the rest look great!

I noticed some people tend to use the same colors every time. I try to use different colors everytime so nobody can remember who I am.
