The Matching Game
« on: June 08, 2017, 01:16:43 AM »
(based on Simon's How are your friends? game from last year)

This game is new and exciting. Learn funky facts about your fellow Lemmingsforums posters!

Joining is simple! A list of questions are posted below. Simply PM me (the Quizmaster) with answers to all these questions.

After a week or so I will post all of the answers given, anonymously. Then your job is to try and match all the responses with who you think gave them (a list of who participated will also be given).
You'll get 1 point for a correct guess, 0 for incorrect guesses, this includes your own answers. You also needn't participated in the first part to make a guess in the second.

If you have any questions feel free to ask here in this thread.

-----------

1 - What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

2 - what website (besides the Lemmings forum) do you visit most often?

3 - What did the three wise men bring to baby Jesus?

4 - If you could choose any profession to suddenly do (isntead of your current one) what would it be?

5 - What video game character best describes you?

6 - Pop quiz, hotshot: There's a bomb on a bus, full of passengers traveling down a highway in a busy U.S. City. The bus's number is 2525. If the bus goes over 50 MPH, the bomb is armed. If it then goes below 50, it blows up. Now what do you do?

5 people joined so far, more can join, come and have fun!

I want to clarify a few things:

-you may change your answer to any (or all) the questions up until the second phase starts.
-The Quizmaster may participate in the first phase, but not the second phase (for obvious reasons).

A wild (and possibly not very good) idea for the second part: what do you think about having people also match responses to "QuizMaster" in addition to the actual list of participants (in which QuizMaster's actual identity is listed)?  Basically for each question, there will be one response that the player will match to both an actual person in the list, as well as to "QuizMaster", each scored separately for the 1 point if correct.  If a player is sure they know who the QuizMaster is (and probably at least one person actually does due to communication of passwords), they could choose to consistently match responses accordingly, but then they are basically double-betting on the accuracy of their response-matchings for QuizMaster, so even then it may not actually be an advantage compared to those who don't know who the QuizMaster is.  You are not required to be consistent from question to question in picking whose answer to match to "QuizMaster".

(If the QuizMaster abstains from phase 1, then the only fair scoring is that no one gets any points for their matches to QuizMaster.  I considered somehow letting people guess whether QuizMaster abstained in lieu of matching a response to QuizMaster, but this doesn't work since someone may know for sure who the QuizMaster is and therefore will also know whether he/she participated in phase 1.)

There is one main problem with this suggestion: Everyone following IRC somewhat closely (or reading through the logs) does know the Quizmaster's identity.

Since this is a new and experimental game, it will be kept simple at least for now, to gauge how fun it can be at it's basic level.

And Nepster's right, Simon gave me the password months ago and I've stated several times I planned to do it; just didn't get around to it until now.

The Matching Game [GUESSING PHASE]
« Reply #6 on: June 15, 2017, 12:24:35 AM »
The Matching Game Phase Two!

11 people have submitted answers and it’s time to guess who said what. Round 1 now is closed; please don’t enter with answers to the questions from round 1.

Anyone may join this phase even if you haven’t participated in phase 1. The object is to guess the answers other people gave. Below is a list of all answers given (randomized). Put the name of who you think gave each answer after it. If you can’t decide on any particular one, simply skip it. You needn’t guess all answers

You may only make 1 guess per pair, in other words if there is 1 answer of “asparagus” then you may only pair it with one participant once. You don’t have to use up all the answers or participants. If you leave any out you simple don’t score for those. There are no penalties. Each correctly guessed answer = 1 point.
In the event that multiple people answered the same, you may pair these as many times as they answered; in other words if 3 people answered “asparagus” you may pair asparagus up with three different people, but no more.

To guess; PM the quizmaster. Make your guesses in this format: [THIS IS AN EXAMPLE ONLY]

1 - What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

[answer given by participant in round 1 - guess by player in round 2]
[There were five participants (five answers for each question)]
[this is how imaginary player "Jonny Humper" would make his guess for question 1:]

asparagus - Raymanni
leek (2 people answered) - mobius, ccx
club mate - Simon
Porcupine -

[Johnny Humper’s guess score breakdown]...

asparagus - Raymanni - correct = 1
leek (2 people answered) - mobius, correct = 1, Simon, (Jonny Humper said ccx, wrong = 0
club mate - ccx, (he said Simon) wrong =  0
Porcupine - geoo [answer left blank will be treated as no guess (0 points), same as wrong guess]

so Johnny Humper gets 2 points total for this question.
All the points from all questions are added up. Player with highest score in the end wins!

--------------------------------------

<<<<Here’s who entered answers from phase 1>>>>>>
note: all lists here have been randomized and are in no particular order, representing nothing.

geoo
Gronkling
NaOH
Ramon
Raymanni
Akseli
mobius
ccexplore
IchoTolot
ColorfulArty
Simon

-----------------------------------------

>>Unless otherwise stated each answer was given once (by one person).

>>>I have designed this post so that you can simply copy/paste the entire list for your PM.
Add the names of your guesses after the hyphen.

1 - What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

chocolate (2 people answered) -
vanilla (2 people answered) -
moose tracks (for any unaware: vanilla ice cream, fudge and peanut butter cups covered in chocolate, or a similar recipe) -

3 - What did the three wise men bring to baby Jesus?

sans (Undertale) -
 :8:()[: (Lix) -
Cranky Kong (Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle) -
Commander Keen (Commander Keen) -
komasan (Yo-Kai) -

6 - Pop quiz, hotshot: There's a bomb on a bus, full of passengers traveling down a highway in a busy U.S. City. The bus's number is 2525. If the bus goes over 50 MPH, the bomb is armed. If it then goes below 50, it blows up. Now what do you do?

answers:

panic -

Jump off the bus and hope I survive. -

It is most likely I am not on this bus and therefore don't know about its existence and terroristic properties, thus I am probably at home sleeping or playing video games, considering the time zone difference. -

Keep the bus just over 80,4672 km/h () and let the passengers jump out as carefully as possible. Better to break some bones as exploding! Of course the driver must be the last one to jump out + choosing a place where the bomb can explode with as little collateral damage as possible. -

Anything I want; this is America after all. -

I would be clueless -

Make note of what everyone else does and publish the events as a movie script. -

Call police, tell 2525. They have enough time to stop because the bus can't go fast in the crowded city. -

If I'm the driver: Honk to make sure the lane stays clear in front of me, If I'm a passenger: DON'T PANIC, If I'm neither: Get the popcorn ready. -

Tell the driver there’s a bomb on the bus and also phone the police/army/bomb defusal team -

shoot the hostages -

Are we allowed to pair the same person to more than one answer?  (Imagine for example if I pair every answer to myself, as a dumb extreme case.)  That way you don't have to leave any answers blank, but also don't have to worry about making sure it's an exact one-to-one pairing (which is a pain when you have 11 people).

if you'd' have asked in the beginning I would've said yes, but now that several people have already submitted guesses, if I change the rules, future entrants may have an advantage, unless the others change their guesses.
I'm saying no because this game has already been complicated enough. The second phase is too tedious and there's not much good incentive for players to submit guesses. Also the scoring may be a slight let down as I'm not going to post everyone's entire submissions; the post would be ridiculously long and difficult to maintain. One upside to Simon's game was this didn't happen.

If I host another quizmaster game after this it will be a different kind of game. (one that is not as tedious).

Fair enough.  The thing was, my suggestion would've actually make things easier since you don't have to worry about accidentally repeating the same person when you make your guesses.  It wasn't obvious how hard it can be to keep track of which person you've already paired to an answer until I started answering.  With my suggestion I could've just paired all the answers that I have no clue on to a single name and be done with it.

The game has ended, please don't send any more PMs. I will post the results soon.

(sorry if you missed it but it's too much work and I'm tired of scoring. Yes, it's not that much work but it is compared to the standard family feud.)

SCORE BREAKDOWN:

questions they guessed correct:

questions:   1  2  3  4  5  6      TOTAL

Simon           3  6  2  4  5  4        24
Akseli           4  4  2  5  5  4         24
Gronkling     1  4  4  4  3  3         19
IchoTolot     1  4  4  3  2  3          17
geoo            2  6  1  4  6  4         23
NaOH           2  4  3  4  4  3         20
ccexplore     4  2  5  6  4  2         23

And the winner is........... A TIE between Simon and Akseli!
with a close second tie between geoo and ccxexplore

The average number of correct answers on any guess was 3. The highest number was 6. Everyone was guaranteed at least 1 guess correct (their own answer).

-Some good funny answers in this game. :D
-In retrospect I should've worded the last question differently to make it clearer and avoid such lengthy answers. In the future I will be much more thoughtful and careful with how I word the questions.
-I've never heard of liquorice or green tea flavored ice cream ????? Not many knew other's favorite flavor of ice cream, even geoo and Simon who are close friends.
-many incorrect choices seemed reasonable; NaOH picking Chell, as a female. Icho liking chocolate icream, he stated in IRC he loves chocolate, mobius picking a pokemon character because he's recently been Lping pokemon on his youtube channel. picking mobius for the incorrect spelling answer of questions 3, mobius often mispells on IRC.
-Apparently almost everyone knows geoo wants to be a rock climber.
-Almost everyone correctly guessed Icho's answer for the Bus question. Probably due to his writing style?

my answers: (mobius)
1 honest answer
2 honest answer; could've also said wikipedia (perhaps should have said this to make it more diverse...)
3 this was my favorite (actual) answer from a particular game of the online family feud game Simon posted long ago
4 I suspected many people might guess, musician for me. I frequently talk about music on IRC. There are many professions I would try. Making movies allows you do get involved with music too, and many other things as well.
5 I actually honestly couldn't think of a very good answer for this question. Somedays I feel like this character... >_> Life is a game and I'm just a pawn
6 a reference to the movie which the question is also a reference to: "Speed" starring Keanu Reeves.  When a bad guy has taken a hostage and threatens to kill them, shoot the hostage in a non-lethal place, the bad guy loses his bargaining chip and is at disadvantage. This has little to do with the answer to the actual question asked.
The actual answer, according to the movie is (ultimately) closest to what Icho said. Near the end, after safely escorting the passengers off onto another moving truck, Keanu Reeves shoves a bar onto the gas pedal to keep the bus going and he jumps off. The bus careens into a plane and blows up spectacularly. Of course not after a bunch of other more totally unrealistic feats.

Thanks everyone for participating! If someone else wants the quizmaster account, PM the quizmaster. If not I may start another game later. It most likely won’t be another matching game.

Thanks for this entertaining game! I acknowledge the massive work for scoring -- you must tally (questions * answerers * guessers) guesses, this can easily be 500 or 1,000 guesses.

"glistening but pointless junk" -- how can that not be by Gronkling :D :p :d :p :d

with a close second tie between geoo and ccxexplore

Actually it turns out you give me an extra point by accident; on question 5 I believe I only got 3 correct, not 4:

Quote from: ccexplore
Chell (Portal) - Gronkling
GLaDOS (Portal) - mobius
Stinky (Wonderland) - ccexplore
Warren (Life is Strange) - Raymanni
pokemon trainer (pokemon) - Akseli
Kane (Command & Conquer) - Simon
sans (Undertale) - Ichotolot
:8:()[: (Lix) - NaOH
Cranky Kong (Donkey Kong Country: Rumble in the Jungle) - ColorfulArty
Commander Keen (Commander Keen) - geoo
komasan (Yo-Kai) - Ramon

I think if we ever try another matching game, we need to first set up a working Excel scoring spreadsheet to automate scoring.  It definitely seems like more work otherwise compared to feud scoring.

=====================

All my answers are honest or pretty close to it, but some I intentionally gave the most generic, curtest answer possible (eg. #3 and #6).  I was tempted to answer "sweet" or something like that for the ice-cream question, but it didn't feel like it quite has the same effect as my #3 and #6 answers so I fell back to an honest answer.

I did not bother to search IRC logs but did in some cases look up past posts of members here, though it often doesn't help.  I think it did allow me to notice mobius getting more active on youtube (but not as much music, again at least from forum posts only), which I guess helped me out on a few questions, including the movie producer/director guess.  It also revealed Raymanni hails from same place as Akseli, which of course only muddies the water.

For my "CEO" answer, I also mentioned an aside to QuizMaster that even when they screw up, they still seem to usually get a nice severance package.  I think in reality even ignoring qualifications and skillsets, it'd simply be too stressful for me, I'm relatively happy with where I'm at currently anyway.

I've never heard of liquorice or green tea flavored ice cream ?????

I only got lucky with the liquorice one because one of the cable TV food-related shows recently had a segment on Finland if I recall correctly, and so I learned about liquorice being a favorite there (although Akseli might have also mentioned it previously on IRC or forum as well).  Even then, it seems both Akseli and Raymanni hailed from there so it's still somewhat 50-50.

Green tea is a Japanese flavor but I had a tough time telling who would know of it.  In theory I could guess Simon (he did brought up Japanese-version Mah Jong at some point a while back), but still feel like too weak an association and ultimately incorrect anyhow.

I do have a preference for chocolate desserts in general but when it comes to ice cream, I think I like most of the well-known flavors pretty equally, like I'm not going to not eat an ice cream just because it isn't chocolate. :P

Finally, for the video game character one, to be honest I couldn't really think of any off top of my head.  Ultimately thinking back to my Chip's Challenge days and how Chip is the only character in the game and can be thought of as the one who needs to outsmart the game (unlike Lemmings, where you are effectively the unseen character in the game calling the shots), I figured that works best as an answer I'd copped to.  Except it'd be too obvious so I picked the other game series I've played that was based on Chip's Challenge, Wonderland.  (And to be fair, I liked the puzzles on that game better than Chip's Challenge anyway, which in latter levels is often too over-reliant on mazes.)

I didn't notice mobius' PM asking for the name of the video game until a few days after phase 2 started.  I did reply back and mobius did edit the post accordingly, not sure how many people noticed though.  I checked that Googling for "Stinky" alone would not pick up the game, but I'm pretty sure Googling for both terms would've (plus I think I might have mentioned Wonderland in the forums as well).
